You can check whether ChatGPT recommends your brand by running a small, repeatable set of realistic category prompts and recording what happens. Treat the result as a dated spot check—not a ranking, a visibility score, or proof that other users will see the same answer. If ChatGPT uses Search, inspect its cited sources instead of assuming the citations confirm the response.
What this audit can—and cannot—tell you
A manual audit captures how ChatGPT answered particular prompts in particular conditions on a particular date. It can show whether your brand appeared, how it was described, which alternatives were named, and whether linked pages support the claims. It cannot establish how often ChatGPT recommends your brand across all users or conversations.

ChatGPT Search can retrieve current web information, and Search responses may include citations and a Sources panel. OpenAI warns that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” A citation is a lead to verify, not proof that a nearby claim is accurate. OpenAI’s guide to searching the web with ChatGPT explains how to review citations and sources.

This 30-minute workflow is a practical manual method, not an OpenAI-published audit standard. There is no established benchmark here for a good mention rate or a passing result, so do not invent a visibility score or success threshold.
#1 Best Overall
Run the 30-minute ChatGPT brand audit
1. Record the test conditions — 3 minutes
Before asking anything, note the date and time, the ChatGPT interface you are using, and the account or workspace context. Also record whether Search is available. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, availability and behavior can depend on plan, workspace settings, role permissions, usage limits, and restricted-access controls. Those factors matter when you compare results later. See OpenAI’s information on ChatGPT Search for Enterprise and Edu.
2. Write realistic, neutral prompts — 5 minutes
Use questions a prospective customer might actually ask about your category. Include at least one recommendation-style question and one comparison or “best options” question. Do not put your brand into every prompt: that tests whether ChatGPT can discuss a brand you named, not whether it brings the brand up on its own.
Rank #2
- “Which [category] brands do you recommend?”
- “What are the best [category] options for [use case]?”
- “How does [brand] compare with alternatives?”
Use the first two to observe unsolicited inclusion. The third is useful for understanding how ChatGPT characterizes your brand when directly asked, but keep its result separate from the unsolicited-recommendation check. These are example prompts, not measured search-query data.

3. Run each prompt consistently — 12 minutes
Run every prompt in a fresh conversation and preserve its exact wording. For each response, note whether Search was used, whether your brand appeared, the role or context it was given, the alternatives named, and whether the tone was positive, neutral, or critical. Do not silently revise a prompt midway through the set; wording changes make results harder to compare.
Rank #3
4. Verify sources when Search is used — 7 minutes
Open the citations or Sources panel and inspect the pages linked to the answer. Check whether each page actually supports the claim beside its citation. If a publication or update date is shown, note it; a source can be relevant but no longer current. Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, according to OpenAI’s Search guidance.
If Search was not used, record that too. Do not treat a response without Search as if it were based on a current review of web pages, and do not compare it as though it had the same source conditions as a Search response.
Rank #4
5. Summarize the observation — 3 minutes
Keep the summary tied to the prompts and conditions you recorded. Report the date, interface and account or workspace context, Search availability and use, observed brand mentions, and the source checks. Describe what happened in this run; avoid claims about all ChatGPT users or a stable position in a ranking.
What to put in the audit record
A compact record makes the check repeatable without implying more certainty than it provides. Capture these fields for each prompt:
Best Value
- Date and time, interface, and account or workspace conditions.
- Exact prompt wording.
- Whether Search was available and whether it was used in the response.
- Whether the brand appeared, and the wording and context of the mention.
- Alternatives named and the response’s positive, neutral, or critical framing.
- Citation or source URLs shown, and whether each source supports the adjacent claim.
- Any uncertainty, such as a missing citation or an unclear source date.
Compare repeat audits fairly
When you repeat the check, compare like with like: use the same prompt wording, interface, account or workspace access, and Search conditions, and record the new date. Then compare whether the brand appeared, its placement and framing, the alternatives named, and whether supporting sources were relevant and current.
A difference between runs does not by itself reveal why the answer changed. Prompt wording, product conditions, and changes on the web may all matter; the available guidance does not establish a method for attributing a particular change to one cause.
