To check whether an SSD works in a handheld console, identify the exact device model and revision, then match the drive’s interface, physical dimensions, capacity, and any thermal or clearance requirements against that model’s official documentation. Do not assume that a console with a microSD slot also supports an internal SSD upgrade.
Start with the exact handheld model
Compatibility is specific to the device, not to handheld consoles as a category. Record the full model name and revision from the device label or system information, then find the manufacturer’s storage specifications or service instructions for that exact version. Confirm first that the internal SSD is replaceable; a removable memory-card slot is a separate feature.

For example, ASUS lists the ROG Ally X (2024) with PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSDs in the 2280 form factor. That published configuration helps narrow a candidate drive, but it is not a blanket certification of every aftermarket SSD or a replacement procedure. See ASUS’s ROG Ally X (2024) specifications.

Compare the SSD against the device’s requirements
Check each of these against the manufacturer’s documentation before buying. A match on one item does not make up for a mismatch on another.
#1 Best Overall
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 2TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
- Replaceability: Verify that the exact model supports internal SSD replacement and consult its service guidance. Do not infer this from microSD support.
- Interface and protocol: Match the drive’s interface and protocol to the specified standard. “M.2” describes a physical module format; it does not by itself establish that the drive uses the required storage protocol.
- Physical fit: Confirm the supported M.2 size and the drive’s full dimensions. Check length, width, thickness, connector or key requirements, and clearance for any label, shield, or heat spreader if the maker specifies them.
- Capacity: Check for a stated minimum or maximum. A capacity listed for a factory configuration is evidence of that configuration, not necessarily a complete list of supported replacement capacities.
- Thermal, power, or firmware limits: Follow any model-specific restrictions and installation instructions the manufacturer publishes. Do not add a heat spreader or other hardware unless the device’s clearance and service guidance allow it.
What the ROG Ally X specification does—and does not—tell you
ASUS lists 1 TB and 2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD configurations for the ROG Ally X (2024). Those details give you a sensible starting point for checking interface and size. They do not, on their own, establish that every retail drive with those labels will fit, that every capacity is supported, or that a particular third-party drive has been approved. Check the complete drive dimensions and the device’s current service guidance before proceeding.
Keep microSD compatibility separate from SSD compatibility
A microSD card is removable storage, not an internal SSD. Steam Support says Steam Deck microSD cards must be formatted before use and supports UHS-I cards rated class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but their higher data-transfer speeds are not supported. These instructions concern the Steam Deck’s card slot; they do not specify internal SSD replacement dimensions or requirements. See Steam Support’s microSD guidance.

Do not apply another console’s SSD rules
Compatibility limits cannot be transferred from one device to another. Sony’s PS5 guidance, for example, specifies an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 drive, a 250 GB–8 TB capacity range, supported lengths of 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110, and dimensional limits that account for a heat-dissipation mechanism. Sony recommends sequential read speeds of at least 5500 MB/s, does not support M.2 SATA, and requires effective heat dissipation. Those are PS5-specific requirements, not handheld-console requirements. Consult Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD instructions only for PS5 compatibility.

- Write down the handheld’s exact make, model, and revision.
- Find the official storage specification or service page for that model and confirm an internal SSD can be replaced.
- Match the candidate drive’s interface, protocol, and connector or key to the published requirements.
- Compare the drive’s full physical dimensions with the available size and clearance, including any attached label, shield, or heat spreader where relevant.
- Check supported capacity and any published thermal, power, or firmware limits.
- Use the manufacturer’s installation procedure and check whether it permits a standard retail drive or specifies a particular part.
- If an internal replacement is not supported—or you prefer removable storage—check the device’s official card guidance separately.
When comparing candidate SSDs, prioritize interface and protocol, physical fit, capacity, and thermal clearance. Advertised sequential speed and price matter only if the device maker makes them relevant; neither substitutes for a compatibility match.
