There is no single badge, lock icon, review score, or lookup that proves an online store is trustworthy. Before entering payment details, check the seller independently, read the terms, compare the full price, and choose a payment method that may give you recourse. These checks reduce risk; they cannot guarantee that an order will arrive.
Check the store and seller outside their own website
Search the exact business or seller name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” and “scam.” Look beyond the store’s own pages, and compare what multiple sources say. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and FTC online-shopping guidance recommend checking seller information before buying.

Reviews are clues, not proof. Ratings and comments can be fake or misleading, so consider where they appear, whether the comments are specific, and whether the reviewer’s history looks credible. A high star score alone does not establish that a seller is reliable.

Identify the actual seller, especially on a marketplace
A familiar marketplace name does not necessarily tell you who will fulfill an order. Check the individual seller’s profile, ratings, and recent comments. Read the marketplace’s rules for items that do not arrive or differ from their listings, and confirm that the stated protection applies to this particular seller and item. Keep payment on the marketplace if paying elsewhere would remove that protection.
#1 Best Overall
Marketplace policies vary, and a platform’s general buyer-protection promise should not be assumed to cover every transaction. The FTC explains this distinction in its marketplace buying guidance.
Look for usable contact details and clear terms
Check whether the seller provides contact information you could use if an order goes wrong. Read the delivery estimate, shipping charges, return and refund rules, warranty terms, and any restocking or return-shipping fees before placing an order. If a detail is unclear, ask a specific question and keep the answer in writing.

Missing official contact details or contact limited to email or social media can be a reason to investigate further, not a definitive verdict. New Zealand’s Consumer Protection guidance on online shopping scams lists such issues among potential warning signs. Canadian government advice also recommends checking seller details and terms: Financial Consumer Agency of Canada: merchant fraud.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare the complete offer, not just the headline price
Search for the same product and model from other sellers. Compare the total after shipping, handling, taxes, delivery charges, and other fees—not only the item price. An unusually low price for an expensive branded product may be a warning sign of a counterfeit or stolen item, but it does not prove that the offer is fraudulent. See the FTC’s advice on spotting and avoiding scams.
Understand what HTTPS does—and does not—tell you
HTTPS encrypts information sent between your browser and a website. It does not verify the merchant’s identity or honesty; scammers can use encrypted sites too. As the FTC puts it: “The ‘s’ means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.” Check the seller and the transaction terms rather than treating the lock icon as a trust certificate. The FTC makes the point in its online marketplace guidance.
Choose a payment method with possible recourse
The FTC recommends paying by credit card or using a secure payment system with buyer protections. Protections depend on the payment method and the transaction, so none guarantees that you will recover your money. Treat a seller’s insistence on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment outside a marketplace as a strong reason not to proceed. These methods can leave you with fewer ways to challenge a payment than a qualifying card transaction or protected checkout.

Keep a record before you place the order
Save the seller’s name and website, the product listing, order details, date and total paid, promised delivery date, return policy, receipt, messages, and payment statement. Keeping the terms and communications makes it easier to explain what was promised if the seller does not deliver.
