Check two things: your iPhone’s battery health and its active power-saving modes. Battery Health and Peak Performance Capability can show whether an aging battery is affecting peak performance; Low Power Mode and Adaptive Power can intentionally reduce responsiveness to save energy. A slow-feeling iPhone alone does not prove either is the cause.
Check Battery Health and Peak Performance Capability

Open the Battery Health screen. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple documents these different paths in its battery-drain guidance.

Read the maximum-capacity figure and the Peak Performance Capability message. A status such as “Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance” means iOS reports normal peak performance support. Another message may say performance management was applied after an unexpected shutdown.

Look for a Service or unable-to-verify notice. A significantly degraded battery can contribute to more noticeable battery and performance issues; if iOS recommends service, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If the battery cannot be verified, its health information might not be accurate. See Apple’s explanation of iPhone battery and performance.

Check whether a power-saving mode is active
Low Power Mode
On iPhone 14 and earlier, check Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. On iPhone 15 and later, check Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. Apple says some tasks may run more slowly while Low Power Mode is on. It turns off automatically after the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. See Apple’s Power Modes guide.
Adaptive Power
On supported iPhones, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode and inspect Adaptive Power. Apple says it can lower screen brightness, limit background activity, and make performance adjustments to conserve power. That behavior is a battery-saving trade-off, not by itself evidence of a fault. Availability depends on the iPhone model and software version; Apple’s current guide lists iPhone 15 Pro or later as supported, and its live compatibility information may change.

Understand what the battery messages mean
Lithium-ion batteries chemically age. With age, a battery can lose capacity and become less able to deliver the instantaneous peak power an iPhone needs. Apple says iOS considers device temperature, state of charge, and battery impedance, and can dynamically manage peak CPU and GPU performance to help prevent unexpected shutdowns.

Possible effects include longer app-launch times and lower frame rates. In more extreme cases, users may also notice dimmer backlighting, lower speaker volume, or other changes. Low charge and cold temperatures can cause temporary effects; battery aging can make some effects more persistent. These symptoms are clues, not a diagnosis on their own.

Battery capacity figures are context, not a universal replacement threshold. Apple says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. Actual capacity depends on how the phone is used and charged. Apple explains these qualifications in its battery and performance guidance.
Choose the next step based on what you find

Account for recent updates, charge, and temperature
If battery life alone seems worse just after an iOS update, Apple advises waiting a few days: background update tasks can continue after installation. A low state of charge or cold conditions can also temporarily affect performance, so note whether the issue occurs only in those circumstances.

Apple says using or charging an iPhone in ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. It gives 62° to 72°F (16° to 22°C) as the ideal ambient temperature range for iPhone operation. These are Apple’s guidance figures, not a way to diagnose an individual battery. Do not disable performance management as a routine fix
Apple says the option to disable performance management appears after an unexpected shutdown related to peak power. Disabling that protection cannot be manually reversed, and the protection returns after another unexpected shutdown. Temperature- and voltage-related fundamental management remains active and cannot be disabled. If the battery status calls for service, follow that recommendation rather than treating protection against shutdowns as the problem.
