No single visual clue or AI detector can prove that an image is genuine. Start with the original file, inspect any signed Content Credentials, check a provider-specific watermark verifier if you know the likely source, and look for earlier versions and independent corroboration. A missing label or detector result means only that the particular check found no supported signal—not that the image is authentic.
What an image check can—and cannot—tell you
Verification is about gathering evidence, not issuing a simple real-or-fake verdict. Different methods examine different things: signed provenance records, a provider’s watermark, patterns in pixels, or copies of the image published online. A positive finding can be useful, but it answers only the question that method is equipped to check.

- Content Credentials can record an image’s origin and declared editing history, including AI use, and help reveal whether the credential or bound asset has changed.
- Watermarks can identify signals associated with particular providers, but only when the image and verifier are within their supported scope.
- AI-image detectors infer likely generation or manipulation from image patterns; their results can be wrong and vary by tool and image type.
- Reverse-image searches and source checks can uncover earlier copies, captions, or independent reporting, but may not find every version.
A Content Credential is a provenance record, not a truth meter. It does not establish that the pictured event happened as described, that the signer is trustworthy, or that every earlier edit was recorded. The C2PA specification explains that credentials assess whether provenance information is well-formed and free from tampering, not whether its claims are true (C2PA Specification 2.2 Explainer). The Content Authenticity Initiative likewise says credentials provide information about origin and history but are not meant to decide whether content is real (How it works).

How to check an image, step by step
- Get the best available file. Prefer the original supplied by the photographer or publisher over a screenshot or social-media copy. Keep an untouched copy and use it for provenance checks before cropping or converting it. OpenAI recommends uploading one image at a time and avoiding crops or format conversion when using its verifier.
- Inspect any Content Credentials. Use a C2PA-aware viewer or validator to check whether credentials are present, whether the signature validates, who signed them, and what creation or editing actions they record. Consider whether the signer is a source you trust. A valid signature protects the integrity of the recorded assertion; it does not certify that the assertion is accurate or that the history is complete.
- Check a likely provider’s watermark tool. If the image may have come from Google AI, try Gemini’s SynthID verification where available. OpenAI Verify checks supported OpenAI provenance signals, including C2PA metadata and SynthID. Neither is a universal detector: a negative result from one company’s tool does not rule out images from other generators—or necessarily every image from that company.
- Look for the image’s history. Use reverse-image search or visual search to locate earlier publications, originals, alternate crops, and captions. Check where the image first appeared and whether reliable reporting or independent records support its claimed date, location, author, and scene.
- Review visual anomalies as leads, not proof. Mismatched reflections or shadows, garbled text, inconsistent edges, unusual hands, or distorted perspective may warrant closer checking. Compression, resizing, retouching, and ordinary image processing can also cause artifacts that look suspicious.
- State the conclusion at the strength of the evidence. For example: “The file contains a valid credential asserting that it was edited with [named tool],” or “This checker detected a supported watermark.” If a check finds nothing, report that no supported signal was detected and identify the check’s scope.
Which verification method should you use?
Choose a method based on what you need to establish. These checks complement one another; none covers every image or every kind of alteration.

| Method | What it checks | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Content Credentials / C2PA validator | Signed provenance assertions, such as origin, recorded edits, or AI use, and whether the credential’s integrity checks validate. | Credentials are opt-in, may be absent or incomplete, and do not establish that a scene or claim is true. Changes outside credential-aware software may go unrecorded. |
| Provider watermark verifier | A watermark signal supported by that provider’s verification system. | Coverage is provider- and system-specific. A missing result does not rule out other providers, unsupported content, or a signal the tool cannot detect. |
| Pixel-based AI detector | Patterns that a classifier associates with generated or manipulated images. | It infers rather than verifies provenance; performance varies with the tool and image, and methods change over time. |
| Reverse-image or visual search | Matching images and online copies that can reveal earlier versions, publication context, or alternate captions. | It depends on discoverable matches and cannot by itself authenticate the image or prove that no earlier version exists. |
| Context and independent records | Whether the claimed date, location, author, or event is consistent with reliable reporting and other evidence. | Corroboration supports the surrounding claim; it does not alone establish how the image was made or edited. |
When deciding whether to upload an image to a service, check its handling terms as well as its detection scope. OpenAI says images and audio submitted to Verify are processed for the check, not stored unless legally required, and not used to train its models (Verify OpenAI-generated content).
What the available checkers actually cover
OpenAI Verify
OpenAI Verify checks an uploaded image or audio file for supported OpenAI provenance signals, including C2PA metadata and SynthID. A detected signal indicates likely origin in OpenAI tools; it does not determine how the image was later used, whether its context is accurate, or whether its claims are true. OpenAI says, “If no signal is detected, it means the tool did not find supported signals in the uploaded file.” That result does not rule out OpenAI generation, another provider’s generation, or a signal outside the checker’s coverage (OpenAI’s Verify guidance).

Google Gemini and SynthID
Google’s November 20, 2025 announcement said Gemini image verification could check whether images were made or edited by Google AI using SynthID (The Gemini app gets new image verification features). In October 2026, Google announced an expanded SynthID verification experience in Gemini, Search, and Chrome, alongside a rollout of C2PA credentials (Tools to understand how content was created and edited). These are Google’s descriptions of its own products; feature availability and coverage can vary during rollout, so check the live product for what it supports in your region and account.
Human review and automated detectors
Visual inspection and AI classifiers can help identify questions to investigate, but neither should be treated as a standalone verdict. NIST’s identity-proofing standard requires covered providers to test media-analysis algorithms against available forged, manipulated, and genuine media, document false-negative rates, and augment automated decisions with manual review. NIST states: “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” This requirement applies to that identity-proofing use case; it is not a guarantee about consumer detector apps (NIST SP 800-63A). NIST’s survey of synthetic-content approaches also describes challenges posed by realistic images and evolving methods (NIST AI 100-4).

How to interpret a missing label or negative result
Absence of a credential or watermark is weak evidence. Credentials are not attached to every image, and metadata or signals may be lost when an image is copied, screenshotted, re-encoded, or otherwise processed. A verifier may also lack support for the image’s provider, format, or transformation history. HHS’s Office of Research Integrity cautions that no credential or watermark does not prove authenticity (Content Provenance).
Likewise, a detector score is not a certificate that an image is AI-generated or authentic. There is no single accuracy figure that applies across consumer detectors, image types, and conditions. Treat a suspicious visual detail or automated score as a prompt to seek stronger evidence—such as a validated credential, a provider-specific signal, an earlier source file, or independent corroboration.
