Before ordering, check the merchant’s instructions and the rules where the alcohol will be handed over. Bring an authentic, current document the service accepts, and make sure the person receiving the order can show it and meet the local legal purchase age.
How to check before placing an order
- Check the rules for the place of handover. The legal purchase age and accepted proof can depend on the jurisdiction. Check the order page or ask the retailer or delivery service what it requires for delivery or collection.
- Confirm your specific document is accepted. Do not assume that a document accepted by one store, app, or country will work with another. Ask first if your ID is temporary, expired, digital, issued outside the delivery location, or otherwise nonstandard.
- Check that the document is current and can be verified. Be prepared for the recipient’s photograph and date of birth to be checked, as well as the document’s authenticity and expiry date. These are checks described in DoorDash’s Australia-specific delivery guidance, not a universal rule for all services (DoorDash Australia guidance).
- Have the recipient ready to show the ID. Some services check ID at pickup or handover, rather than relying only on information entered at checkout. For example, DoorDash’s US terms require the recipient to show valid government-issued ID proving the legal age for the delivery or pickup location; the recipient must also not be intoxicated (DoorDash US terms).
What can happen if the ID check fails?
The order may not be handed over if the service cannot verify the recipient’s age. In England and Wales, licensing guidance says age verification should take place before alcohol is handed over, including for remote sales, and that the person serving or delivering is responsible for ensuring the check occurred (Home Office section 182 guidance). DoorDash’s US terms also set conditions for handing over alcohol. Cancellation, return, and refund outcomes depend on the service’s terms and applicable local law; there is no single refund rule established here.

Examples of how requirements differ
England and Wales: physical and certified digital proof
The current section 182 guidance covers age-verification measures for licensed premises and remote alcohol sales. Its physical-ID criteria include a photograph, date of birth, and a holographic mark or ultraviolet feature. The mandatory age-verification policy described in the guidance applies to people who appear under 18; businesses should follow the current guidance for their circumstances (Home Office section 182 guidance).

From 15 September 2026, licensed premises in England and Wales may choose to accept certified digital proof of age alongside physical ID. Adoption is optional, so check whether the particular retailer accepts the digital credential you intend to use before relying on it. The change does not alter the legal drinking age, and physical ID remains valid (UK government announcement). The government’s announcement said 72% of respondents to its 2024 consultation supported using digital identities for alcohol age checks; that figure describes consultation responses, not retailer adoption or public opinion generally.

Certified digital identity is distinct from age-estimation technology. The government’s 2024 consultation outcome said age-estimation technology was not being allowed at that time for alcohol age verification; the newer 2026 announcement sets out the optional certified digital-ID route (2024 consultation outcome).
United States: DoorDash policy example
DoorDash’s US terms say an alcohol recipient must show valid government-issued ID proving the legal age that applies where delivery or pickup takes place, and must not be intoxicated. Availability and requirements can vary by location. The cited terms do not settle every document edge case, such as temporary paper IDs or particular tribal, territorial, or out-of-state credentials. Ask the merchant or platform about the exact document rather than treating DoorDash’s terms as a rule for every US alcohol seller (DoorDash US terms).

Australia: DoorDash document examples
DoorDash’s Australian delivery guidance lists an Australian state or territory driver licence, learner permit, Australian or foreign passport, and proof-of-age card as examples. It instructs delivery workers to check the recipient’s photo and date of birth and the document’s authenticity and expiry. This is an Australia-specific platform process, not a general document list for other countries or services (DoorDash Australia guidance).

- Can the recipient’s photo and date of birth be checked?
