Before buying, verify the phone’s exact model and regional variant against Google’s supported-device information, then check Play Protect certification on the device if you can inspect it. A generic “Android” label, a Play Store icon, or a seller’s assurance does not confirm that Google supports that particular phone.
What to verify before paying
Start with the precise model identifier, not just the brand or product-family name. One family can include different regional variants, and the software state of a particular handset can affect its certification status.

- Ask the seller for the exact model and regional variant. Request the model number and build designation, not only the marketing name.
- Check Google’s supported-device information. Search for the exact identifier. Google says an unlisted device may be newly released or may not work with Google Play; if it is missing, check with the manufacturer before buying.
- Confirm the details on the handset when possible. Google’s route to identify them is Settings > About phone. Compare the displayed model or build information with the listing and the supported-device entry.
- Check certification in Google Play Store. Open Play Store, tap the profile icon, then go to Settings > About and read the Play Protect certification status.
Google’s supported-device page and the handset’s certification screen answer related but distinct questions. If the listing and the device disagree, ask the seller or manufacturer to explain the exact variant and software state before completing the purchase.

“Device is certified”
This is the on-device status to look for. Google says Play Protect-certified devices have passed Android compatibility testing and are supported for Google Play; they are eligible to include Google apps such as Play Store. Confirm that the screen belongs to the same handset and software configuration being sold.

“Device is not certified”
Do not treat this as a setting to fix by switching on app scanning. Google identifies common causes of certification failure including an unlocked bootloader, a modified Android operating system, and root access. Ask the seller or manufacturer to resolve the status or choose a handset whose exact model and certification can be verified.
No clear result or the model is absent from Google’s list
Pause rather than infer compatibility from the phone’s appearance or installed apps. Google notes that a model can be missing because it is new, but it also may not work with Google Play. Contact the manufacturer for confirmation of the precise model and region; do not rely on a retailer listing as proof of certification.

Google Play services, Play Store, and Play Protect are not the same
- Google Play Store is the app-store application.
- Google Play services is separate core system software that enables key functionality on certified Android devices. It is not the Play Store app. See Google’s explanation of Google Play services.
- Google Play Protect is a feature that checks apps and can warn about harmful software.
- Play Protect certification is the device’s certification status, not the app-scanning feature.
Google explicitly distinguishes certification from Play Protect scanning. Turning scanning off or on will not make an uncertified phone certified. For Google’s explanation of the scanning feature, see Use Google Play Protect.
Why certification matters to a buyer
Google warns that uncertified devices may not be secure, may not receive Android system or app updates, may have unlicensed or non-genuine Google apps, may have functions that do not work correctly, and may lack secure backups. These are risks Google identifies for uncertified devices; they do not establish that every individual uncertified handset will experience every problem.

Certification can also be affected by modifications. Google lists an unlocked bootloader, a modified Android OS, and root as possible causes of a failed check. A phone’s status after modification may therefore differ from what a seller claims about the model generally. Ask about the software state of the actual unit being sold.

For the list itself, use Google’s Google Play supported devices guidance. Google says users can use the device’s model or build number to check compatibility; an absent entry is not proof either way without manufacturer confirmation.
