Before installing an Android app, check where it came from, who published it, what recent reviewers report, what its Google Play Data safety section says, and whether its permissions fit its purpose. Keep Google Play Protect on. These checks reduce risk, but none proves an app is safe: Play’s data disclosures are supplied by developers, and automated scanning cannot replace checking that the app is genuine.
Use this checklist before you install
- Confirm the source. Prefer Google Play or the publisher’s official distribution channel. Don’t install from a link unexpectedly sent in a text, chat, email, or call. Scammers may pose as bank fraud staff, technical support, or delivery services to pressure you into installing a fake app. Verify the request through the organization’s official website or a phone number you already trust. Android Help explains the risks of apps from unknown sources and warns about unverified-developer scams.
- Check the listing and developer. Read the developer name and description, then look at ratings, download count, and individual reviews. Prioritize recent, specific reports of unexpected charges, intrusive behavior, impersonation, or features that do not work as advertised. Ratings and popularity are clues, not proof; a high score does not establish that an app is genuine or harmless. Google recommends checking ratings, downloads, and individual reviews.
- Read the Data safety section. On a Google Play listing, open Data safety and choose See details. Check whether the stated collection and sharing make sense for the app’s purpose. The section is for apps distributed on Google Play and is available on Android 5 and later. Google explains what the Data safety section covers.
- Compare permissions with the app’s job. Consider why the app needs access to a feature or information. A maps app may reasonably need location while in use; a basic calculator asking for broad contact or accessibility access needs a clear explanation. A permission alone does not prove an app is malicious, but don’t grant access you can’t justify.
- Leave Google Play Protect enabled. It is on by default. You can check its status in the Play Store’s Play Protect area. Treat a clean scan as one useful signal, not a guarantee.
- Stop if the app or a caller pressures you to bypass a warning. Don’t treat an installation block as routine friction. Confirm the request with the alleged organization using its official site or a known number before acting. Google’s guidance on installs from unverified developers describes a one-time advanced process with a 24-hour security delay; availability and menu locations can vary.
What Google Play’s Data safety section can—and can’t—tell you
Data safety is a developer’s disclosure of how an app collects, shares, and handles data. It applies across versions distributed on Google Play, but privacy practices may vary by user, region, and age. App-specific details may also appear in the listing, privacy policy, or other documentation. Google says some processing that happens only on the device, and some ephemeral processing, may not count as collected in the disclosure. A short or reassuring label is therefore not an independent audit of every operation.

The permissions list and Data safety section answer different questions. The permissions list is based on technical information about what an app can access or request; Data safety is based on the developer’s declarations about collection and sharing. They can differ for legitimate reasons, including on-device processing, collection that is not managed by a permission, or a data or service type not covered by the label. If the two seem inconsistent, look for an explanation before granting access rather than assuming either screen settles the matter.

Google lists requirements that include independent Mobile Application Security Assessment Level 2 validation, a minimum period on Play, install and review thresholds, an organization developer account, API-level requirements, and a Data safety declaration. Google says its published criteria are not exhaustive. The badge is not a guarantee of safety, and its absence does not prove an app is unsafe. See Google’s Data safety and VPN verification details.

What Play Protect does
Google says Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download, scans the device and apps from other sources, and may warn about, disable, or remove apps it detects as harmful. It can also issue privacy alerts and, on some Android versions, reset permissions. Google recommends leaving it on. Read Google’s description of Play Protect.
Play Protect is a detection and response layer, not a substitute for checking that you have the intended app, that its developer is the one you trust, or that its requested access fits its function. A scan result does not certify an app as safe.

Why installing an APK from outside Play deserves extra caution
Android can install apps from sources other than Google Play, but Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put your device and personal information at risk, including through device damage, data loss, or compromised personal information. If you need an app distributed outside Play, use the publisher’s official channel and verify its identity independently; don’t rely on a download link supplied by an unsolicited message. Android Help’s guidance on downloading apps explains this risk.
Developer verification is also rolling out in phases. As of October 4, 2026, Google’s guidance says the initial phase began in September 2026 on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. It applies to apps from participating stores, which the page names as Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. The policy applies to certified devices running Android 8 and later; AOSP and non-certified devices are exempt, along with stated region and service exceptions. Google plans global expansion for apps on certified devices in 2027; that is a stated plan, not a completed rollout. Check Google’s current developer-verification guidance for scope and timing, since rollout details may change.

If you already installed the app
- Review its permissions and remove any access that is not needed. Android lets you manage permissions for an app or by permission type; it can also automatically remove permissions for unused apps. Google’s Data safety help includes permission-management guidance.
- If the app’s behavior, permissions, or disclosures remain concerning, uninstall it. If a person or organization urged you to install it, contact that organization through a known official route rather than replying to the original message or caller.
Where to find Android security and privacy settings
On Android 13 and later, Google’s guidance places combined controls at Settings > Security and privacy. Android 12 and earlier may show separate Security and Privacy sections. Device makers can customize menus, so names and paths may differ; consult your manufacturer’s instructions if these steps don’t match. See Google’s security and privacy settings guidance.
