How to Check Whether an AI Security Tool Is Protecting Your Business

Define what your AI security tool should protect, test it in real workflows, review alerts and business disruption, and repeat checks after meaningful changes.

You can’t establish that an AI security tool protects your business from a feature list or vendor demo alone. Define what it is meant to protect, test it against realistic threats in the workflow where it will be used, measure both security outcomes and disruption to legitimate work, and review the evidence as the system changes.

Start with the business risk, not the tool’s feature list

Effectiveness depends on what your organization needs protected and how the AI system is actually used. Identify the important data, systems, people, and business processes; the threats that could affect them; and the level of risk your organization can accept. NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework connects business context and risk understanding to prioritizing security work: NIST’s CSF 1.1 Five Functions.

Turn that context into a specific protection claim. For example, specify which application and data are in scope, what kinds of harmful activity the tool should detect or prevent, and what should happen when it does. Where relevant, include connected components such as prompts, retrieval sources, APIs, agent tools, permissions, and human review. These boundaries matter because a tool’s performance on an isolated model may not reflect its behavior in the integrated business workflow.

Set measurable success criteria before testing

Write down what a successful result means before running an evaluation. Tie the measures to business needs rather than choosing an attractive metric after seeing the results. A practical scorecard can cover:

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  • Coverage: Which in-scope threats and workflows should the evaluation exercise?
  • Detection and prevention: Which test events should generate an alert, be blocked, or trigger another control?
  • Response: What action should follow, and how quickly must staff be able to understand and handle the event?
  • Evidence: What logs, alerts, and records must be available to explain what happened?
  • Business impact: What disruption to ordinary, legitimate activity would be unacceptable?

Record assumptions and risk tolerances alongside the criteria. There is no universal pass score or false-alarm threshold established for every business or commercial tool; set thresholds that make sense for your use case and document why.

Use complementary tests in the real deployment

Assess the complete system and the work it supports—not only the underlying model or a polished demonstration. NIST’s AI TEVV-Athlon page says the AI Risk Management Framework calls for a test, evaluation, verification, and validation methodology. Its TEVV-Athlon framework was an initial public draft with comments open through October 6, 2026, so treat it as draft guidance rather than a finalized requirement: NIST’s TEVV-Athlon Framework for Evaluating AI Systems.

NIST’s ARIA Evaluation Planning Manual, published September 18, 2026, describes combining model testing, red teaming, and user testing. Each looks at a different part of the question:

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Capability or model testing

Check whether expected safeguards work in the defined scope. Use scenarios tied to the protection claim and examine whether the system produces the expected security behavior.

Red teaming

Probe realistic adversarial paths relevant to the business application, including connected components where they are in scope. Keep tests authorized and bounded; do not use an uncontrolled production attack as a substitute for a planned evaluation.

User testing

Observe how the tool behaves for the people who must use or respond to it in ordinary workflows. A control that looks effective in a lab may be difficult to interpret, operate, or reconcile with legitimate work.

Inspect operational evidence and business impact

Review alerts and logs to establish whether relevant activity was detected, whether staff could understand its impact, and whether response, containment, and recovery steps worked. Look for evidence across the incident lifecycle rather than treating an alert as proof of protection. NIST’s CSF overview includes continuous monitoring, incident response, recovery, and improvement based on lessons learned: NIST’s CSF 1.1 Five Functions.

Include ordinary business activity in the evaluation. A tool should not be considered effective merely because it blocks suspicious-looking behavior if it also obstructs routine work. Compare the security outcomes with the effect on legitimate use, and document missed events as well as false alarms. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal acceptable rate for either.

Keep an evidence record and repeat the evaluation

Keep the scenarios, test dates, system configuration, observed results, deviations, incident findings, and remediation decisions together. This makes it possible to understand what was actually evaluated and whether a later change affects the conclusion.

Revisit the evaluation after a meaningful change to the model, configuration, connected data or services, business use, or threat assumptions. NIST’s preliminary draft Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence says organizations need to continuously evaluate whether defensive AI capabilities are mature enough for their needs. It is draft guidance, not a final requirement, and the cited sources do not prescribe a universal review interval: NIST’s preliminary AI Cybersecurity Framework Profile.

If you hire an AI red-teaming provider, evaluate the work—not the pitch

When internal capacity is limited, an external provider or assessment tool may help. Compare options by the scope they can assess, threat realism and coverage, repeatability, evidence quality, operational fit, and governance. Ask whether the work covers the integrated application and agent actions where relevant, how limitations are reported, how sensitive data is handled, and how authorization and remediation are managed.

OWASP’s vendor evaluation criteria were created for assessing red-teaming providers and tools ranging from simpler generative AI systems to advanced agentic applications. They are selection criteria, not independent proof of any provider’s performance or a ranking of vendors: OWASP Vendor Evaluation Criteria for AI Red Teaming Providers & Tooling v1.0. A jailbreak-only demonstration is not enough to establish coverage of the real business system.

NIST’s NCCoE practice guide offers an example of a cybersecurity reference design, but its laboratory environment does not represent production complexity and its commercial products are not endorsements. Adapt reference architectures to your environment rather than treating them as proof that a particular configuration will work for your business: NIST SP 1800-26B.
