To verify the destination, open the scheduled event in YouTube Studio, start your encoder, and confirm that the expected video and audio appear in that event’s Live Control Room preview. Only then click Go live. A stream key saved in your encoder is not, by itself, proof that the feed is reaching the scheduled event you intend.
What a stream key confirms—and what it does not
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials that, together with a stream URL, let an encoder send a feed to YouTube. Treat the key as secret: do not include it in a screenshot, article, or message. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

The key in an encoder’s saved settings does not identify which scheduled event you have selected in Live Control Room. Scheduling an event and configuring an encoder are separate steps. The practical confirmation is the expected incoming feed in the preview for the event you selected—not merely an encoder status saying it is connected.
Reusing stream settings copies the earlier stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. After reusing them, check the selected event and its preview rather than assuming the remembered key is correct. YouTube Help explains stream settings and reuse.

Verify the scheduled event before going live
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live, then open Manage.
- Select the intended scheduled stream. Check its title and scheduled time in the interface. Do this before sending a feed, especially if the channel has several upcoming events.
- Check the event’s stream settings. Confirm the selected stream key and the stream URL or protocol expected by your encoder. Keep the key private.
- Inspect the encoder’s active destination. Confirm its YouTube destination and key. If it has multiple profiles, destinations, or saved events, inspect the active profile—not only a default or previously saved setting.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Allow time for YouTube to receive the feed. In the selected event’s Live Control Room, confirm that the preview shows the intended program and that its audio is correct.
- Go live only after the check passes. When the expected feed is visible on the intended event, click Go live for that event. YouTube’s documented workflow calls for waiting for the preview before starting the scheduled stream. YouTube Help: Schedule live streams.
YouTube’s Help pages do not describe a separate “bound to event” status field or say that a key uniquely identifies a scheduled watch page. Use the event selection and its incoming preview as the observable check.
If the feed appears on the wrong event or no preview appears
- Stop the encoder before changing settings. This prevents an unintended feed from continuing while you correct the destination.
- Return to Manage and select the intended event. Recheck its title, scheduled time, stream key, and server URL.
- Update the encoder with the intended settings. YouTube recommends retrieving the key from Live Control Room and updating the third-party encoder when a stream fails to start. Check the URL as well as the key. YouTube Help: Fix live stream issues.
- Restart the encoder and check the intended event’s preview again. Do not click Go live until the preview is attached to the right event.
- Reset an exposed key. An owner or manager can reset a stream key in Live Control Room; editors and viewers cannot. Replace the key in the encoder after resetting it. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Check URL, protocol, and encoder support if the preview remains absent. For RTMPS, YouTube says to copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports RTMPS. YouTube Help: Schedule live streams.
Rehearse scheduled streams safely
Set up the encoder ahead of time, start it before the scheduled start, and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends testing the setup. Where appropriate for the channel and event, rehearse with a private or unlisted test; confirm the selected event, picture, and audio before the public start. YouTube Help: Schedule live streams.
