Check all three stages: your encoder is sending the video, YouTube’s Live Control Room shows an incoming preview and healthy status, and the event’s watch page plays for its intended audience. The encoder’s “streaming” indicator alone does not prove the YouTube event is live.
What “broadcasting” means
A video-file stream can be in three different states:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Encoder output: Your encoder is sending the file to YouTube.
- YouTube reception: Live Control Room receives the feed and displays a preview and stream status.
- Viewer access: The event is live and its watch page is accessible to the audience allowed by its privacy setting.
Confirm each stage. A local encoder indicator proves only the first.

Check the stream from YouTube Studio
- Open the event. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live and select the relevant stream in Live Control Room.
- Start sending the file. In your encoder, load the intended video and start streaming to YouTube’s server URL using the stream key associated with that event. Treat the key as a credential; do not share it publicly.
- Confirm YouTube receives it. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check the stream health and status, including any error message or instructions.
- Start the broadcast. When the preview appears, click Go live in Live Control Room. Sending data from the encoder and starting the YouTube event are separate actions in YouTube’s documented encoder workflow.
- Verify the viewer experience. Open the event’s watch page and, if useful, your channel page. Confirm that the video plays and that the sound and picture match what you intend to broadcast. Keep monitoring the preview and stream health.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips put the preview check before starting the stream: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.” For an encoder-based event, follow the Live Control Room workflow’s specific instruction to click Go live after the preview appears. Diagnose the result
The encoder says it is streaming, but there is no preview
- Check that Live Control Room has the correct event selected.
- Verify the server URL and that the encoder is using the stream key for that event.
- Read the status or error message in Live Control Room and follow its instructions. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a fresh key and update the encoder for relevant encoder-start errors.
A stream key identifies the feed for YouTube to accept; YouTube describes it as a password and address. Keep it private. YouTube encoder troubleshooting
The preview appears, but viewers do not see a live event
Use the event’s Go live control after the preview appears. Then test the event watch page directly rather than relying on the encoder status.

Encoder settings to check if the feed will not work
Settings are troubleshooting checks, not a guarantee that the stream will connect: your upload connection and encoder configuration also matter. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For current compatibility details, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: For H.264, YouTube lists these minimum and recommended values:
| Video format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular internet connection will sustain the stream. Compare the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate configured in the encoder with the settings YouTube supports.
