How to Check Whether a Suspicious File or Link Installed Malware on Windows

Use Windows Security’s Protection history and Microsoft Defender scans to check for malware. A clean scan is reassuring, but it cannot prove a suspicious link or file made no changes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Windows Security’s Protection history, scan the suspicious file or folder, update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence, and run a scan. If a threat persists or returns, use Microsoft Defender Offline. These checks can find evidence of malware, but a clean result cannot prove that clicking a link or running a file made no changes.

Start with Windows Security’s Protection history

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Review recent detections, current threats, quarantine or removal actions, and anything you may have allowed. Protection history records actions Defender has taken; it is useful evidence to consider alongside the current threat status. See Microsoft’s Protection History in the Windows Security App.

If you find an item you do not trust that was allowed, remove it from Allowed threats so Defender can act on it again. Follow the available removal or quarantine prompt rather than allowing a suspicious item to run. Microsoft explains detection and remediation in Getting started with anti-malware in Microsoft Defender.

Scan the suspicious file or folder

In File Explorer, right-click the downloaded file or the folder where it was saved and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. On Windows 11, the option may be inside Show more options. Windows Security will report whether Defender found a threat. Do not open or run the file just to test it. Microsoft’s instructions are in Scan an item with Windows Security.

Update Defender and scan the PC

In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, check for security intelligence updates before scanning, so Defender has current detection information. Then choose a scan based on what you need to check:

Scan What it checks When to use it
Quick scan A quick check for common places malware may be found. Start here after updating protection.
Full scan Every file and program on the device, according to Microsoft. Use it if concern remains after a quick scan.
Custom scan Locations you select. Use it to check a particular location.
Microsoft Defender Offline A scan outside normal Windows, in Windows Recovery Environment, after a restart. Use it when malware persists or returns, or may be hiding while Windows runs.

To choose a Full or Custom scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Microsoft documents the scan types and results in Virus and Threat Protection in the Windows Security App and its guidance on how to start a scan for viruses or malware.

Use Defender Offline if a threat persists or returns

Microsoft recommends Microsoft Defender Offline when the same malware keeps coming back or when evasive malware may hide while Windows is running. Save open work first: the scan restarts the PC, runs outside normal Windows in the recovery environment, and restarts the PC again when complete. Check Protection history afterward for the result. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for detecting and removing malware.

How to interpret symptoms and scan results

Symptoms can prompt a check, but do not diagnose malware

Sudden slowdowns, reduced battery life, increased data use, unexpected ads or pop-ups, and browser redirects can be clues. They are not proof of infection: resource changes, for example, may indicate an unknown background process. Check Protection history and scan results rather than treating one symptom as a diagnosis. Microsoft lists these possible signs in its scan guidance and home computer security guidance.

A clicked link is not the same evidence as a run file

Microsoft Defender web protection checks links against an updated list of sites known to be dangerous and may warn you. That reputation check does not establish what happened on your specific PC. Similarly, a clean scan is reassuring, but it cannot prove that a page or a file you previously ran made no changes. Microsoft describes web protection in Getting started with web protection in Microsoft Defender.

A clean scan is not a guarantee

If scans find nothing but you remain concerned, Microsoft advises checking the device more thoroughly. A Full scan and, when appropriate, Defender Offline provide additional checks; neither turns the result into certainty about past activity. Microsoft’s next-step guidance is in Stay protected with the Windows Security app.

If Defender detects malware

Follow Defender’s quarantine or removal prompt. It may block and attempt to remove a threat, or ask you to take action; do not choose Allow for an item you do not trust. If malware has caused changes that cannot be reversed, Microsoft says a reset or reinstall may be needed. Where possible, restore files from a backup made before the infection and stored separately. See Microsoft’s malware removal and recovery guidance.
