To check whether a Steam demo is likely to run on your PC, open the Steam Store page for that exact demo, find System Requirements, and compare every listed minimum requirement with your computer: operating system and version, 32- or 64-bit architecture, processor, RAM, graphics hardware and any stated graphics API or DirectX requirement, and free storage. A match is a useful screening check, not a guarantee of a successful launch or smooth performance.
Start with the exact demo’s Steam Store page
Open the listing for the demo you intend to download and scroll to System Requirements. Steam Support directs players to the store page’s requirements and says to check supported operating systems as well as hardware: Steam’s compatibility guidance.

Use the demo’s own listing rather than assuming the full game’s requirements apply unchanged. Developers can publish different details for a demo, and store listings vary in which operating systems and specifications they cover. For example, The Membrane Demo lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux requirements, while Pinoptic Demo has Windows and SteamOS/Linux sections. Those examples illustrate differences in listing coverage; their specifications do not tell you whether another demo will run.

Compare every requirement with your PC
Read the complete minimum list under the operating-system heading that matches your computer. Compare like with like rather than checking only the graphics card or processor.

- System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 8GB DDR4 | 500GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
- Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
- Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
- Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse

- Operating system: Check that your Windows, macOS, or Linux version is supported. Note any required 64-bit operating system; Steam specifically highlights this as a requirement worth noticing.
- Processor (CPU): Compare the listed model or equivalent with your PC’s processor. If the listing says “or equivalent,” treat an unfamiliar model as uncertain rather than assuming it qualifies.
- Memory (RAM): Compare the stated amount with installed memory. RAM is separate from graphics memory.
- Graphics: Compare the GPU model or stated performance class, and check any required graphics API or DirectX version. A similar-sounding GPU name alone does not establish that it meets an API requirement.
- Storage: Check that the required free space is available on the drive where you plan to install the demo.
Find your computer’s specifications in Windows
- Check Windows and basic device specifications: Open Settings > System > About. Use the information there to identify your Windows version, system type, processor, and installed RAM.
- Check DirectX and graphics details: Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Microsoft says the DirectX version appears on the System tab under System Information. The Display tab provides graphics-device information to compare with the demo listing: Microsoft’s DirectX instructions.
- Check free storage: In File Explorer, check the available space on the drive you will use for installation and compare it with the demo’s stated storage requirement.
If a listed requirement uses a GPU or CPU model you do not recognize, or your PC information does not clearly show whether an API, architecture, or operating-system version is supported, mark that item as uncertain. Do not turn an unclear comparison into a pass.
Interpret a minimum-spec match cautiously
Minimum requirements are a threshold, not a promise of a particular frame rate or trouble-free launch. Steam warns that a computer at or near the listed requirements may have performance or launch issues. Drivers, exact hardware variants, settings, and the software environment can also affect results, so a checklist cannot predict every configuration. Steam explains this caveat in its troubleshooting guidance for games that do not run after “Preparing to Launch.”

If one or more requirements are unclear or appear unmet, check the developer’s information or ask the developer for clarification before treating the demo as compatible. Steam’s store page is the place to begin, but the information it contains can vary by title and may change when the developer updates the listing.
If you plan to play on Steam Deck
Use the title’s Steam Deck compatibility details in addition to the relevant system requirements. Steam uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. The store-page details describe conditions a title does not meet when it is labeled Playable or Unsupported. Unknown means Steam has not tested compatibility; it is not a negative result. Steam Deck review also considers usability and system support, so its status is a Deck-specific signal rather than a universal benchmark for desktop PCs. See Steam Deck Verified and Steam’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide. Store listings can show platform-specific requirement sections too, as on the Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes Demo; check the section and compatibility information relevant to the device you will use.
