How to Check Whether a Steam Deck Game Is Using the Right Shader Cache

Steam lets you inspect a game’s selected compatibility tool, but not verify that it loaded the correct shader cache. Here are the useful checks and their limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can check which Steam Play compatibility tool a Steam Deck game is set to use, but Steam’s documented settings do not confirm that the game loaded the “right” shader-cache files. A shader download, a “Processing Vulkan shaders” message, or cache files on disk can show cache activity; none is a definitive per-game cache verification.

Check the game’s compatibility tool

  1. Open the game in your Steam Library.
  2. Open Properties, then select Compatibility.
  3. Check whether Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool is enabled. If it is, note the selected tool; if it is off, Steam is not being told to force a specific tool for that game.

Valve documents this setting for choosing a compatibility tool, not for certifying a shader cache. Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for running Windows-exclusive games on Linux using Wine; Valve says most users should use the Proton version supplied by the Steam client. If Proton troubleshooting is appropriate, Valve advises trying the latest Proton version for the Steam app, but does not say one version is right for every game. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide and the Proton repository explain these settings and recommendations.

If the game works normally, the presence of a shader cache alone is not a reason to force a different compatibility tool.

What shader activity can—and cannot—tell you

Downloads and processing messages

A shader download or a launch-time “Processing Vulkan shaders” step indicates cache-related activity, but does not establish that the files match the game and its current software state. If processing takes less time on a later launch, that is consistent with previous work being reused; it still does not prove which cache was used or whether it was the right one. A Valve Proton issue records that message as a user-reported symptom, not as an official diagnostic test: the “Processing Vulkan shaders” issue report.

Cache files on disk

A file listing is also only a clue. In one Valve-hosted issue, a user reported repeated .foz files under a shader-cache path while using non-Steam games on a Deck. That report concerns the user’s particular setup; it does not show that every game uses that path, that duplicate files mean failure, or that a listing identifies the active cache. The issue report is not a universal rule for Steam Deck games.

Do not delete cache files just to check whether they are correct. The reviewed Valve documentation does not provide a supported user-facing indicator that identifies the cache artifact a particular game loaded.

Account for updates and graphics changes

Steam’s behavior around shader caches can change with client updates and graphics changes. In a Steam client update dated March 4, 2022, Valve described changes to when Proton shader caches download and said stale shader-cache data would be deleted after GPU or driver changes. That changelog documents the update at that time; it is not a promise that every current cache event will be visible or behave identically. Steam Client Update Released, March 4, 2022.

If you are troubleshooting instability or performance, check for Steam system updates using Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide. Note whether a SteamOS/client update or graphics change happened around the time the problem began.

Troubleshoot a persistent problem without guessing at the cache

Since there is no documented cache-match indicator, compare the game’s behavior under controlled conditions rather than treating a file or progress message as a verdict.

  1. Write down the game, the exact symptom, and when it began. Note recent SteamOS, Steam client, or graphics changes.
  2. Record whether a specific compatibility tool is forced and which tool is selected, or whether the setting is left unforced.
  3. Change one relevant setting at a time. If Proton troubleshooting is warranted, try a Proton version as Valve advises; do not assume the latest version is universally correct.
  4. Repeat the same launch or in-game scenario and compare the symptom before and after the change. A change in symptoms helps assess the setting, but still does not prove which shader-cache artifact loaded.

Valve’s guidance supports checking updates, trying a Proton version, and adjusting graphics settings when troubleshooting. It does not provide a universal shader-cache repair procedure. If the issue is specific to one title, the game name, compatibility tool, software state, and reproducible symptom are needed to investigate further.
