Check SonicWall’s current MySonicWall incident notice and the device-impact information in your account, then investigate the firewall itself using its logs, configuration history and related network records. A cloud backup file being accessed does not prove that the firewall associated with it was accessed or compromised; those are separate questions that require separate evidence.
Was my SonicWall firewall exposed, or were its backup files accessed?
Start with SonicWall’s MySonicWall Cloud Backup File Incident notice and the device-impact information available for your organization’s account. Check each relevant appliance and save the result and any vendor instructions provided. The notice concerns configuration backup files stored in SonicWall’s cloud service. A result indicating that backup data may be in scope is not a finding that an attacker accessed the corresponding firewall.

In its November 4, 2025 update, SonicWall said its completed Mandiant investigation confirmed unauthorized access to firewall configuration backup files in a specific cloud environment. The update distinguished that event from ongoing Akira ransomware attacks against firewalls and other edge devices. Do not treat the cloud-backup incident as proof of an appliance intrusion, or treat reports of those separate attacks as proof that your device was affected. See SonicWall’s investigation update.

What details should I collect about the appliance?
Before deciding which advisories or remediation steps apply, identify the exact device and how it is configured. Keep the information with the device-impact result and the time you checked it.

- Whether SSLVPN is enabled and which interfaces expose administrative management.
- Whether locally managed accounts are enabled for remote access, and whether accounts or configuration were migrated from an earlier-generation device.
- Relevant MFA settings and the administrators or service accounts authorized to make changes.
Compare the recorded model and version with the affected-product and affected-version information in the applicable SonicWall advisories. For example, SonicWall’s December 18, 2025 SonicOS improper access-control notice applies to the versions listed in that notice; it also gives password guidance for certain Gen 5 and Gen 6 SSLVPN users with locally managed accounts. Follow the notice only if your product and configuration match its stated scope, and check the linked notice for current instructions. A vulnerability or an exposed service increases the need to investigate, but neither proves that an attacker used it.
How do I know if someone accessed the firewall?
Review the evidence available for the installed SonicOS version and the period you are investigating. Look for activity that cannot be explained by authorized administration, then compare it with change records, maintenance windows and known administrator activity before classifying it as malicious.

- Authentication and access: unfamiliar successful logins, unexpected administrative access, or SSLVPN activity that does not match known users or expected work.
- Accounts and authentication controls: newly created or altered accounts, unexpected password or MFA changes, or remote-access accounts that should not be active.
- Configuration: unexplained changes to firewall rules, remote-access settings, management access or other security-relevant settings.
- Corroborating records: compare firewall findings with identity-provider, VPN, endpoint and network records, when available. An unfamiliar event can have a legitimate explanation; correlations help establish whether it fits authorized activity.
SonicWall’s SSLVPN recent-threat-activity guidance for Gen 7 and newer firewalls recommends reviewing packet captures, logs, MFA settings and recent configuration changes. The SonicOS 6.5.1 Log Events Reference Guide describes viewing or exporting the appliance event log, which records potential security threats. Its instructions are specific to that version: menus differ across releases, and the history available depends on logging and retention settings. There is no single public indicator that proves compromise across every SonicWall generation and configuration.

What should I do if I find suspicious activity?
- Preserve what you can. Export or otherwise retain relevant logs and configuration evidence before making changes that could overwrite or remove them. Record when you collected the evidence and any gaps in the available history.
- Use the applicable vendor instructions. Check the current incident notice and the advisory for your exact model and firmware. Apply required updates to affected products; do not assume a patch alone proves whether an intrusion occurred.
- Address potentially exposed credentials. Follow SonicWall’s current guidance to rotate credentials that may have been exposed, including relevant local and connected-service credentials, and review MFA. Coordinate changes with administrators so response actions do not disrupt evidence collection or authorized access.
- Escalate unexplained access or changes. Coordinate containment and investigation with your organization’s incident-response team. If evidence indicates unauthorized access, or the records are too incomplete to interpret confidently, involve a qualified incident-response provider.
A password reset, firmware update or factory reset by itself does not establish the scope of an incident. Preserve and assess the available evidence, and follow your organization’s response process before taking actions that could remove useful records.
