Better response after removing one accessory suggests it may be contributing, but does not prove a particular defect; if touch still fails with both removed, continue with troubleshooting for your exact device.
How to test the case and screen protector
Use the same app or screen and repeat the same action each time—for example, tapping the same controls or swiping from the same edge. Note whether touches are missed, delayed, intermittent, unintended, or troublesome only near an edge or during a gesture. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which comparison changed the result.
- Check the screen and your testing conditions. Clean and dry the display. Remove gloves and any stickers covering the screen or sensors. On iPhone or iPad, Apple also advises disconnecting Lightning or USB-C accessories while troubleshooting.
- Remove the case, then repeat the task. If touch improves, the case may be interfering. Check whether it overlaps or presses against the active display edges, and confirm that it fits the exact device. Removing the case is a test, not proof of a specific case defect.
- If the problem remains, remove the screen protector and test again. An improvement points to the protector as a possible contributor, but does not identify the precise cause. Google Pixel Help advises that a protector may not be reusable after removal, so consider that before lifting an adhered protector.
- Compare the results. If practical, repeat the same task after each change. Record whether the issue disappeared, improved only partly, or stayed the same, and whether it affects the whole display or a particular edge or gesture.
This is a practical way to isolate whether an accessory may be involved, not a formal diagnostic test. Other conditions—including moisture, debris, software state, settings, or a device fault—can also affect touch response.
What to do if removing an accessory helps
If the case appears to be involved
Check the case fit and whether its edges touch or press on the display area. If you replace it, choose one compatible with your exact phone model. The comparison does not establish that every case of that type will cause the same problem.

If the screen protector appears to be involved
Check whether the protector is correctly suited to your exact device model. If you remove it, be prepared for the possibility that it cannot be reused. A replacement may be relevant when the test points to the installed protector, but it will not address unrelated software, moisture, damage, or device problems.
Follow the guidance for your device
Android phones
Google’s Android troubleshooting steps include checking for visible screen damage, removing a case or screen protector, gloves, and stickers over the screen or sensors, and cleaning the display. Google recommends checking after each step; restarting is another troubleshooting option.

Google Pixel
Google Pixel Help says, “Try removing the case or screen protector to see if touch responsiveness improves.” It warns that a protector may not be reusable after removal. Settings and diagnostics depend on the model: Pixel 8a and earlier, including Fold, have a documented Screen protector mode under Display and touch > Touch sensitivity; Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL have documented Touch diagnostics and an Adaptive touch setting. Follow the current instructions for your exact model.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung Canada says a case, protector, or other accessory can affect sensitivity and gesture recognition. Its guidance recommends Touch sensitivity when a screen protector or tempered glass is attached, and also recommends removing the case or protector to check whether touch works normally. If the issue persists, it points users to Samsung Members diagnostics or a service center. Menu names and layouts can vary by model and software version.

iPhone and iPad
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for screens that are too sensitive or respond intermittently includes restarting the device, making sure the screen is clean and dry, disconnecting Lightning or USB-C accessories, and removing cases or screen protectors. Apple says service may be needed if the screen still does not work.

Continue with the manufacturer’s steps for your device, including any restart, settings, or diagnostics that apply to its model and software version. Persistent problems may require manufacturer support or service. The accessory comparison alone cannot establish that the screen has a hardware fault.
