How to Check Whether a Robot Vacuum Is Affected by FCC Import Restrictions

The FCC listing does not determine every robot vacuum’s status. Verify the exact model, where it was produced, any Conditional Approval and its FCC authorization record.

Check the exact robot vacuum—not just its brand—against the FCC’s technical definition of an “advanced robotic device,” confirm where that model was produced, then review the current FCC Covered List, conditional-approval notices and equipment-authorization record. The FCC added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to the Covered List on July 28, 2026, but a category listing alone does not establish that a particular vacuum is restricted.

What the FCC listing means for robot vacuums

The FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau added “foreign-produced advanced robotic devices” to the Covered List on July 28, 2026. The current list describes the category as “Foreign-produced advanced robotic devices, except advanced robotic devices which have been granted a Conditional Approval by DoW.” See the FCC’s current Covered List and the July 28 notice.

This is not a blanket finding that every robot vacuum is prohibited, or that every product in the category has the same status. The definition is technical and depends on the device’s functions and components. A vacuum’s brand, Wi-Fi connection, autonomous movement, weight or marketing label is not enough on its own to settle whether it falls within the definition. For a close case, compare the exact device with the definition in the FCC notice.

How to check a specific robot vacuum

  1. Identify the exact model and related hardware

Write down the full model number and hardware version, and locate the FCC ID if one appears on the device, its label or its authorization documents. Record the dock or ground-station model too, if applicable, and confirm that the version is intended for the U.S. market. Similar product names can refer to different hardware.

  2. Compare the device with the FCC definition

Read the definition in the FCC’s July 28 public notice. It considers multiple characteristics, including ground movement; remote or sensor-based operation; weight; environmental sensing; connectivity; and software that controls functions such as navigation or perception. Assess the criteria together. A single matching feature does not establish that a vacuum is covered.

  3. Verify where the exact product was produced

Look for reliable documentation about the production location of that model and any other production details relevant to the FCC definition. A manufacturer’s headquarters or brand nationality does not prove where a particular product was made.

  4. Search the Covered List and conditional-approval notices

Check the current Covered List and subsequent FCC notices for the exact device or producer. The FCC’s September 9, 2026 notice says that certain advanced robotic devices granted Conditional Approval by the Department of War (DoW) are exempt from the Covered List. The approval is specific to the devices described in the notice; do not assume it applies to every product from the same brand. Read the FCC’s conditional-approval notice.

  5. Check equipment authorization separately

Search the FCC equipment-authorization record using the device’s FCC ID, where available, and consult the FCC’s importation guidance. The FCC’s OET KDB 997198 explains how to identify imported goods that require FCC equipment authorization and links to importation information. This check is related to, but distinct from, determining whether a device or category is on the Covered List. FCC OET KDB 997198.

  6. Ask for missing records instead of guessing

How to interpret what you find

  • A product-category match is not a model-level result. The FCC’s listing names foreign-produced advanced robotic devices, but the exact device and its production facts still matter.
  • A Covered List check is not an equipment-authorization check. Review both when assessing a product’s FCC status; they address related but different questions.
  • A conditional approval is not automatically brand-wide. Confirm that the exact model is included in the applicable FCC notice before treating it as exempt.
  • Do not infer a result from a missing or unclear record. Request documentation and verify it rather than treating uncertainty as either approval or restriction.

What to record when comparing models

If you are checking more than one vacuum, compare the exact hardware version, relevant technical features and weight, production location, FCC ID and authorization record, and whether that model falls within a current Conditional Approval. A brand or product family may not have one uniform result across models or versions.
