That does not mean every game gets the same Pro enhancement, every PS4 game works, or every older accessory fits. PS5 games
PlayStation states that PS5 Pro can play all PS5 games. Pro enhancements and performance improvements vary by game, so compatibility alone does not promise a particular visual or performance upgrade. See PlayStation’s PS5 Pro page for its current product information.

PS4 games
PlayStation’s current PS5 Pro page says the console can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, with a small number of exceptions. The broader PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable, while warning that some may have errors or unexpected behavior and that some PS4 features may be unavailable. These are figures as shown on the official pages accessed October 4, 2026; neither page assigns a publication year to its count.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLook up the exact title before counting on it. On PlayStation Store, a game that does not work on PS5 is marked “Playable on: PS4 only.” Sony recommends trying a PS4 game on the console before buying add-ons for it. Keep the console’s system software current.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
PS3 games and upgrades
PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. A PS4 digital upgrade that requires the original PS3 disc also cannot be played on PS5, according to the backward-compatibility guidance.
Confirm the console can read the games you own
Disc-based PS4 games require a PS5 Pro configuration with a compatible disc drive, and the game disc must remain inserted while you play. PlayStation’s Pro compatibility guide lists a compatible add-on disc drive, but check the exact console configuration and current listing rather than assuming a drive is included. If you need one, look for a listing that explicitly identifies compatibility with PS5 Pro.
Digital purchases do not require a disc drive: sign in with the account that owns them and download them from your game library. A disc drive does not make an unsupported game compatible; check the title separately.
Match controllers to the game generation
- PS5 games: Use the DualSense controller. PS5 Pro also supports DualSense Edge.
- Supported PS4 games: DUALSHOCK 4 and licensed third-party gamepads can work with supported PS4 games.
- Third-party controllers: For a model not covered by PlayStation’s guidance, check the controller maker’s compatibility information and whether the particular game supports it.
PlayStation’s backward-compatibility guidance distinguishes PS4-game controller support from PS5-game support; an older controller working with a PS4 title does not make it suitable for PS5 games.
Check headsets, VR gear, and other accessories individually
Headsets and audio
Sony says PS5 Pro works with audio devices in the same way as PS5. On PS5, headsets connected by USB or the audio jack work, although some companion apps may not. For unusual wireless setups or a headset that depends on an app, verify the exact product with its manufacturer.
PlayStation VR
Using original PS VR on PS5 requires the PS VR headset, a PS Camera for PS4, and a camera adaptor. The newer HD Camera does not work with PS VR. Some VR games also require PlayStation Move controllers or the VR Aim controller. This is a specific legacy VR setup, not evidence that every PS4 accessory works on PS5.
Stands, covers, and bases
Physical fit is model-specific. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide lists the PS5 Pro vertical stand and horizontal feet as compatible, but excludes CFI-1000 PS5 covers, CFI-2000 Slim cover sets, and the PS5 console base. Check the exact console model and accessory rather than relying on a generic “for PS5” label.
Use this compatibility check before switching consoles
- Identify the destination console. Confirm it is a PS5 Pro and check its exact configuration, especially whether it has a disc drive or needs the compatible add-on.
- Check each game. Use the official backward-compatibility guidance and look for the PlayStation Store “Playable on: PS4 only” label. Note any game-specific feature loss or warnings.
- Sort controllers by game. Plan on DualSense for PS5 games; use DUALSHOCK 4 or a licensed third-party controller only with supported PS4 games. Confirm third-party compatibility with both the maker and the game.
- Verify accessories by type and model. Check audio connection and app support, VR requirements, drive compatibility, and the fit of stands, covers, or bases independently.
- Choose how to bring over games and data. Options include network transfer, redownloading digital purchases, inserting a physical game disc, connecting supported USB extended storage, using eligible M.2 storage from another PS5, or downloading cloud saves if available. Confirm PS4 game compatibility before transferring it.
Choose the right way to move games and saves
PlayStation’s data-transfer guidance covers transfers from PS4 or another PS5. What can transfer depends on the source console and whether you are moving data during initial setup or later. Do not assume every data type is transferable in every situation.
- Network transfer: Before starting, use the same account on both consoles, update system software, synchronize trophies, and connect both consoles to the same network. Do not interrupt the transfer or change network settings while it is running.
- Digital games: Sign in to the account that purchased the game and download it from the library. Cloud saves can be downloaded if available.
- Physical games: Insert the game disc; a disc-based PS4 game needs a compatible drive, and its disc must stay inserted during play.
- External storage: Supported USB extended storage can be connected to the new console. Eligible M.2 storage from another PS5 is another option; check PlayStation’s setup and transfer instructions for the applicable requirements.
For initial setup details, see PlayStation’s PS5 getting-started guide.
Compare accessories on the details that matter
When deciding whether to reuse an accessory, compare the destination console’s hardware support, the game generation it works with, any disc-drive or connection requirement, model-specific physical fit, and whether the intended feature or companion app works. PlayStation’s compatibility pages provide these distinctions; they do not establish a head-to-head test of third-party products.
