First check which version of the game is running. A PS4 version played through backward compatibility, a native PS5 release, and a PS5 upgrade are different builds, so an improvement on one does not prove the PS4 version runs better. For PS4 games on PS5, Game Boost works automatically and may improve performance in select titles—but it does not guarantee a visible change in every game.
Check which version of the game is running
If a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions, confirm which one is installed or selected before comparing performance. Use the game hub or Game Library on PS5 to select the version; Sony documents how to switch between versions in its backward-compatibility guidance. A PS5 version or upgrade is a separate build and may include changes that are not part of the PS4 game running on PS5.

Upgrade availability and terms vary by game and edition. Check the Store listing and the publisher’s information to see whether an upgrade is available and whether it is free or paid. Compatibility alone is not evidence of an upgrade: Sony says the PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, while the Store identifies titles that are playable on PS4 only. Sony also advises trying a PS4 game on PS5 before purchasing add-ons for it.
Look for game-specific performance information
Check the PlayStation Store listing and the publisher’s current support page or patch notes. Look for a note that identifies the platform and game version, and specifies changes such as an unlocked frame rate, a resolution change, or a PS4 Pro patch. A note about a native PS5 release or PS5 upgrade applies to that build, not automatically to the PS4 version.

Sony’s general compatibility information explains how PS4 games work on PS5, but it is not a title-by-title performance benchmark. Its PlayStation ecosystem guidance says that select PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, but does not provide a complete list of frame-rate, resolution, or loading results for individual games.
What Game Boost does—and does not—tell you
Game Boost is automatic when a PS4 game runs on PS5; there is no PS4 Pro-style Boost Mode switch to enable. Sony says select games may run at a higher or smoother frame rate. Some titles may also load faster or show higher fidelity, but the result depends on the game and is not guaranteed for every PS4 title.
Existing PS4 Pro enhancements supported by a game may carry into the PS5 gameplay experience. That is separate from a native PS5 version or upgrade: first identify the build, then look for title-specific evidence before attributing a change to backward compatibility or Game Boost.

Check the extra PS4 image-quality option on PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro has a separate option called Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. Sony says it is available for PS4 games on consoles in model group CFI-7000 and requires a display capable of 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. It is not the same feature as Game Boost.
- On PS5 Pro, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games.
- If gameplay behaves unexpectedly, turn the option off, as Sony advises in its PS5 Pro image-quality guidance.
This setting is an additional image-quality option, not proof that a particular game has a higher frame rate.
Find games marked PS5 Pro Enhanced
To find games Sony identifies as PS5 Pro Enhanced, open the PlayStation Store’s Collections section and select the PS5 Pro Enhanced collection, or search the Store for “PS5 Pro.” Sony documents this discovery path in its PS5 Pro guidance. The label is specific to the Pro-enhanced designation; it is not a complete list of PS4 games that may see ordinary Game Boost effects.

How to compare performance fairly
If you are checking a result yourself or reporting a comparison, use the same game build and comparable gameplay conditions on each console. Record what was tested so a reader can tell whether the comparison concerns the PS4 version, a PS5 upgrade, or a native PS5 release.

- Identify the hardware and output: state the console model and display or video-output settings.
- Compare like with like: use the same scene or activity, and keep settings consistent where the game allows it.
- Separate the measures: describe frame rate and stability, resolution or image quality, and loading time separately. Do not treat one as proof of another.
- Qualify frame-rate claims: say that a game is capped or unlocked only when reliable, title-specific information confirms it.
State whether a result comes from publisher documentation or a measured comparison. The Sony pages linked above do not prescribe a benchmark method or validate individual comparisons, so a result should not be presented as Sony-tested unless it was.
Compatibility is not a performance guarantee
Sony’s support page says more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, but also notes that some games may show errors or unexpected behavior. The same page says more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5; that percentage is launch-era FAQ wording on the current page, not a fresh 2026 measurement. Neither figure says how much faster or better any particular game runs.
For a specific title, the dependable answer comes from identifying the build and checking current game-specific information. If no publisher note or clearly described comparison establishes a change, treat improved performance as unconfirmed rather than assuming it from PS5 compatibility.
