Not every species has a shiny variant available, and some are shiny-eligible only during specific events. To confirm an individual encounter, look for the shiny icon above its CP; color alone is not reliable.
Check current availability for the exact Pokémon
Start by identifying the species and form you mean, including any regional, costume, or event form. Then check the latest Niantic Pokémon GO updates and event announcements. Niantic says shiny variants are not available for every species, and some can be encountered shiny only during particular events.

Pay attention to the event dates and eligibility details. An old announcement or a Pokédex entry does not establish that the shiny is encounterable now.

Confirm whether an individual encounter is shiny
During an encounter, check for the shiny icon above the Pokémon’s CP. Niantic identifies that icon as the confirmation of shiny status. Do not rely on coloration alone: regional forms can look different from the standard form without being shiny.

Niantic lists wild encounters, raid bosses, research breakthroughs, research task rewards, and other rewards as possible shiny encounter routes. Its general help page does not provide species-specific odds for those routes, so the existence of a route—or a report about another player’s encounter—is not enough to establish a particular probability.
Find shiny Pokémon already in your collection

Check the Shiny Pokédex
Open the Pokédex and select the Shiny category to view registration status. An outline indicates a shiny form that has not been registered. The Pokédex records your collection; neither an entry nor an outline tells you whether that Pokémon can be encountered shiny right now.
Compare reports and event details carefully
When checking an announcement or another player’s report, match all the details that could change the answer:

- Species and form: Check the precise regional, costume, or event version.
- Encounter route: Note whether it was wild, a raid, research, or another reward.
- Event window and eligibility: Confirm when the reported shiny availability applies.
Some shiny forms are event-limited. Niantic names Smeargle, Unown, and Meltan as examples that cannot be encountered shiny outside specific events, so check official updates for the relevant event window. Niantic’s general help page does not give odds for each species or route.

Ditto will not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon. A shiny Ditto may, however, disguise itself as a Pokémon that is not shiny. The appearance of a disguised Pokémon therefore does not by itself confirm Ditto’s shiny status; use the encounter’s shiny indicator.
