To check whether a phone case fits, identify your phone’s full model name or model number, then match it to the case maker’s exact compatibility listing. After fitting the case, check that it sits securely and that its camera, sensor, button, charging-port, and speaker openings line up. A shared brand, family name, or screen size is not enough to confirm compatibility.
1. Find your phone’s exact model
Start with the phone itself, not the name used in a shop listing or remembered from the packaging. A broad label such as a brand or product family may cover several models or variants with different bodies and layouts.

Look in the phone’s About screen for its model name and, where shown, model number. Record the complete information, including any distinction such as size or generation. If the phone’s menus do not make the model clear, follow the manufacturer’s identification instructions. Apple’s official model-identification information, for example, lists model numbers alongside model names and distinguishing details.
For a non-Apple phone, the exact route to its model information depends on the manufacturer; there is no single menu path established for every Android device. Use that phone maker’s current instructions rather than assuming that a family name identifies the exact model.

2. Match the case listing to that model
Check the case maker’s or seller’s compatibility information for the exact model you recorded. The listing should name your phone, including a relevant variant when applicable. A case advertised for a similar phone, the same product family, or a phone with the same screen size is not confirmed to fit yours.
Phones that look alike can differ in body dimensions and in the position or shape of their cameras, buttons, and other openings. Even a small mismatch may leave a control difficult to use or place a case edge across the camera or charging port. Dimensions can help narrow down possibilities, but they do not replace an exact-model compatibility listing and a physical alignment check.

If a listing uses an abbreviated or ambiguous name, do not guess. Check the case maker’s compatibility details or ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm that the case is intended for your complete phone model. If you cannot verify the match, do not force the case onto the phone.
3. Check the fit after installing the case
Being able to insert the phone is not enough to establish a good fit. Check the case around the entire device and make sure it seats evenly without forcing it. Then inspect the openings and test that the controls and connections remain accessible.

- Camera: The camera opening should be in the right position and should not cover the lens area.
- Sensors: Check that any relevant sensor area is not blocked by the case.
- Buttons: Confirm that the case aligns with the phone’s controls and that they remain usable.
- Charging port and speakers: Check that the openings line up and are not obstructed.
- Seating: Look around the edges for uneven seating. The phone should settle into the case without pressure or forcing.
Huawei’s support instructions for a TPU-case example recommend aligning the camera opening first, pressing the rest of the phone into the case, and adjusting the case slightly if needed. That is an example for that fitting situation, not a universal installation procedure for every case material or design.
4. Use the same checks to compare two case listings
When you are choosing between cases, compare the details that determine whether each one is meant for your actual phone:

- Does the compatibility list name the exact phone model and relevant variant?
- Does the camera opening match the camera’s position and shape?
- Are the buttons and any relevant sensor areas aligned?
- Can you reach the charging port, and do the speaker openings line up?
- Once fitted, does the case sit securely without needing to be forced?
A dimensions match can be a useful clue, but it cannot establish that the cutouts and controls align. Prefer a listing that explicitly names the exact model, then check the installed case against the phone.

It depends on the exact old and new phone models and on the case maker’s compatibility information. A newer phone may share a family name or screen size with an older one while differing in its body, camera layout, buttons, or openings. There is no general rule that cases can be shared across generations.

Check the newer phone’s complete model against the case compatibility listing. If the maker does not confirm that pairing, treat the fit as unverified rather than relying on appearance or an apparent size match.

What to do if the case does not fit properly
- The phone will not seat: Stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the model printed in the case listing against the phone’s full model information.
- An opening is off-center or blocked: Check that the case is intended for the exact model and variant. If the case is correctly identified but still does not align, contact the seller or case maker.
- The listing only names a family or screen size: Ask for confirmation of the exact model before relying on the listing.
- You are unsure whether generations are interchangeable: Verify that specific phone-and-case pairing with the case maker or seller; resemblance alone does not confirm compatibility.
