Use more than one check. On Steam Deck, read the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility category; on a Linux PC, inspect the Steam Store operating-system and hardware requirements. If the game is Windows-only, test Proton and consult recent ProtonDB reports. Then verify multiplayer anti-cheat support and whether your hardware meets the game’s requirements. No single label or community report guarantees identical results on every system.
The fastest way to check a game
Before buying or installing, identify which question you are asking. “Works on Steam Deck” means Valve’s Deck-focused compatibility assessment. “Works on Linux” may mean a native Linux build, or a Windows build running through Proton. “Runs well on my computer” also requires suitable CPU, GPU, memory, storage and graphics-driver support. Treat these as separate checks.

- For Steam Deck: open the game’s Steam Store page or Library entry and read its Steam Deck Compatibility section.
- For a Linux PC: open the game’s System Requirements and confirm that SteamOS or Linux is listed, along with hardware requirements.
- For a Windows-only title: check whether Proton can launch it, then review current reports from systems similar to yours.
- For online games: verify the specific title’s anti-cheat and other middleware configuration, not merely whether the anti-cheat product exists on Linux.
- For any result: compare the stated requirements with your actual hardware and expect software, driver and game updates to change compatibility.
What the four Steam Deck labels mean
Steam assigns four categories to games it evaluates for Deck use. The category is a starting point, not a frame-rate or image-quality guarantee.

The criteria can cover input, text legibility, display behavior, launcher behavior and compatibility software. A Playable or Unsupported page may identify the exact unmet criterion, which is more useful than treating the label as a simple yes-or-no score.

Checking Steam Deck compatibility in Steam
From the Steam Store
- Open the game’s Steam Store page in the Steam client or a browser.
- Find the Steam Deck Compatibility panel near the game’s purchase and platform information.
- Record the category: Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown.
- If the result is Playable or Unsupported, open the details and read the listed criterion or warning. Use that detail to decide whether the limitation matters to you.
The Store result is title-specific. Do not infer that another game from the same publisher, engine or franchise has the same status.
From your Library
- In Steam, select the game in Library.
- Read the Deck compatibility indicator on the game page or open its compatibility details.
- For a game you have not installed, use the Store link from the Library page to see the full explanation before downloading it.
Ratings can change when a game, Proton, SteamOS or its middleware changes. Check the current listing again if you have not played the title recently.
Checking a Linux PC for a native build
A native Linux build is compiled for Linux rather than translated from Windows. On the game’s Steam Store page, open System Requirements and look for supported operating systems. Confirm both the operating-system entry and the hardware requirements; a Linux listing alone does not mean that your computer can run the game.

- Open the game’s Store page.
- Scroll to System Requirements.
- Read the Linux or SteamOS entry, if present, and note the minimum and recommended CPU, memory, graphics, storage and other requirements supplied by the developer.
- Compare those requirements with your distribution, graphics driver, processor, GPU, RAM and free disk space.
- Check whether the title is available through the Steam for Linux client. Steam provides a SteamOS + Linux store filter for games downloadable by that client.
Steam cautions that manually searching for supported Linux games may not return correct results. Use the game’s own requirements and the SteamOS + Linux filter rather than relying on a generic web search or a label copied from another site.

- Native Linux: the developer supplies a Linux version. It avoids the Windows compatibility layer, but it still has its own driver, launcher, controller and performance requirements.
- Proton: Steam’s compatibility technology can run some Windows games on Linux and SteamOS. A Windows-only Store listing can therefore be playable even when no Linux build is offered.
- Steam Deck usability: Valve evaluates a title on the Deck’s controls, screen, input methods, text, launcher behavior and Proton or middleware behavior. A game can have a native Linux build and still be awkward on Deck, or run through Proton without being Deck Verified.
Do not turn one of these facts into another. “Has a Linux version” does not prove that a game is Deck Verified, and “runs on my Deck” does not establish performance on a different Linux computer.
Testing a Windows-only game with Proton
Steam Play allows a Windows game to use a Proton compatibility tool on Linux or SteamOS. Forcing Proton is a troubleshooting option, not proof that the game will work.
- Open Steam Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a current Proton version available in the list, then close the dialog and launch the game.
- If it fails, return to the same menu and try another installed Proton version, beginning with the latest version Steam offers. Record which version you used when looking for help.
A launch is only the first test. Check menus, controller input, resolution, audio, save games, video playback, multiplayer and suspend/resume behavior. A title that reaches its main menu may still fail in a later scene or when connecting to a server.
Changing Proton versions can alter behavior after a game update. Keep the working version noted, but do not assume it will remain the best choice after a new game or Proton release.
Using ProtonDB without treating it as a guarantee
ProtonDB collects crowdsourced reports about Linux and Steam Deck experiences. It is useful when Valve has not tested a game or when you need practical details that a Store label does not show, but it is unofficial and configuration-dependent.

How to read a report
- Prefer reports close to your own hardware: Deck model, GPU family, processor, distribution and desktop environment can all matter.
- Check the report date. Older reports may describe a game, driver or Proton release that has since changed.
- Note the Proton version, launch options, patches, controller settings and workarounds used.
- Separate “launches” from “fully playable.” Look for reports covering the parts you care about, especially multiplayer, cut-scenes, input and long sessions.
- Look for several recent reports with similar results rather than treating one person’s success or failure as universal.
An aggregate status on ProtonDB is a community signal, not a Valve compatibility rating. Two systems with different GPUs, drivers, distributions or Proton versions can produce different outcomes.

Multiplayer needs a separate investigation because a game may run offline while refusing a protected online session. Valve’s Deck Verified criteria require that, when a game runs through Proton, the game and all of its middleware—including anti-cheat—be supported by Proton.
Support for an anti-cheat product in general is not enough to establish support for a particular game. The developer or publisher must configure and enable the title’s actual anti-cheat service for the platform. Check current game-specific announcements, the Store notes and recent player reports. A configuration can change without the game’s graphics or single-player code changing.
Questions to answer before buying an online game
- Does the game’s online mode work through Proton, or only its offline mode?
- Is the current anti-cheat configuration enabled for Linux or SteamOS?
- Do reports mention account kicks, authentication loops, crashes after updates or disabled matchmaking?
- Does the game require a separate launcher or middleware component that behaves differently on Deck?
If online play is the reason you are buying, treat an unverified or contradictory multiplayer status as a purchase risk even when the game launches successfully.
Check hardware separately from operating-system support
Steam explicitly advises checking hardware requirements in addition to compatible operating systems. Compare the developer’s stated requirements with your actual machine rather than assuming that a Linux-compatible game will run acceptably.

- Graphics: identify the exact GPU and compare its supported API, driver and memory with the game’s requirement.
- Processor and memory: compare the CPU generation and core requirements, then check installed RAM and whether other applications will compete for it.
- Storage: confirm free space for the installation, updates, shader caches and save data.
- Display and controls: a game designed for a large monitor and mouse may need interface scaling or control remapping on a handheld.
- Power and thermals: a laptop or handheld can reduce clocks on battery or under sustained heat, producing different results from a desktop with similar headline specifications.
Deck ratings are Deck-focused. Steam says titles tested in Deck Verified maintain their ratings across Deck LCD and OLED models. That does not establish the same performance on another Linux PC with different hardware. Guidance for third-party SteamOS-compatible devices can differ, so consult the device manufacturer for detailed support.

When choosing between two or more titles, keep the dimensions separate. A single “works” column hides the reason one game may be a better fit.

What to do when the checks disagree
Steam says Unknown, but ProtonDB reports success
Read several recent reports and match their hardware and Proton versions to yours. Treat the result as a trial candidate, not a guaranteed purchase. Install only when you can test within the store’s applicable refund conditions and your own time constraints.
Steam says Playable, but you dislike the listed limitation
Read the specific criterion rather than relying on the label. If the issue concerns tiny text, a launcher, keyboard input or a control that cannot be remapped comfortably, the game may be unsuitable for your use even if it technically runs.

Determine whether the workaround affects only launch, or also saves, updates, graphics, controls and online play. Workarounds can break when the game or Proton changes, so keep expectations and maintenance effort realistic.
The game launches, but performance is poor
Recheck hardware and driver requirements, then compare your settings and Proton version with recent reports from similar systems. Lowering resolution or visual settings may help, but it cannot fix an unsupported anti-cheat system, a missing launcher dependency or hardware below the game’s requirement.
Offline mode works, but multiplayer does not
Investigate the game’s current anti-cheat and middleware configuration. A successful local launch does not demonstrate that the protected online service accepts Linux or SteamOS clients.
Keep the result current
Compatibility is a moving status rather than a permanent property. Recheck the Store category and requirements after major game updates, Proton releases, SteamOS updates or anti-cheat changes. When saving a note for yourself, include the date, device, operating system or SteamOS version, Proton version, game build and whether you tested offline and online modes. That record makes an old success or failure interpretable instead of misleading.
The dependable method is therefore layered: use Valve’s Deck category for Deck-specific usability, the Store requirements and Linux filter for native platform support, Proton for a Windows-only experiment, ProtonDB for current community evidence, and the game’s actual anti-cheat configuration for multiplayer. Only after those checks should you decide whether the game is a sensible match for your machine and the way you plan to play.
