In India, a “no-cost EMI” label does not by itself mean the lender has waived interest or that the purchase has no extra charges. Some offers continue to charge contractual interest and use a seller-funded discount or cashback to offset it. To check the real cost, compare the cash price with your down payment, every instalment, separately billed fees and taxes, minus any discount already applied and cashback clearly promised for your transaction.
What “no-cost” can mean
The label can describe who absorbs the interest cost, rather than the absence of interest in the loan. In one offer document, ICICI Bank says banks charge interest on EMIs and that, under the described no-cost arrangement, the interest is adjusted in the order price. Axis Bank’s Flipkart offer terms describe a seller-funded upfront discount equal to EMI interest and say the discount is not an interest waiver by the bank. These are examples of specific offers, not a universal definition.

Keep three items distinct when reading an offer: the lender’s contractual interest, the merchant’s discount or subsidy, and any separate fees or taxes. A cashback paid after the purchase does not reduce the loan balance at checkout.
ICICI Bank’s offer terms say: “Banks charge an interest on all EMIs. However, under a no-cost EMI offer, the total interest payable, is already adjusted in the price of the order.” The statement describes that offer type; it is not a legal definition covering every EMI transaction. Axis Bank’s Flipkart offer terms state: “The discount under No Cost EMI on credit card payment option is being offered exclusively by sellers and does not amount to EMI/interest waiver extended by the bank.”

Check the offer before you accept it
- Save the price breakdown. Record the cash price and checkout price, including product price, instant discount, financed amount, down payment and selected tenure. Note whether a discount is already deducted or is supposed to arrive later as cashback.
- Read the exact offer terms. Check which card or loan type, product and tenure qualify; any minimum purchase; the interest or subvention amount; discount or cashback value and timing; fees and taxes; and the rules for returns, cancellation or early closure. Conditions can vary by offer, issuer, tenure and date.
- Read the lender’s documents. Where provided and applicable, check the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and loan agreement, as well as the issuer’s current schedule of charges. Look for principal, annualised rate or APR, instalment amount and count, processing or documentation fees, taxes, late-payment charges, and cancellation or foreclosure costs. Whether a particular card or merchant EMI is covered by a specific KFS requirement depends on the facility.
- Calculate the total outlay. Use: down payment + all instalments + separate fees + taxes and other disclosed charges − discount already applied − confirmed cashback. Compare the result with the cash purchase price. Keep future or conditional cashback separate until it is credited; count it in the comparison only when the offer terms clearly make it available for your transaction. This is a practical comparison, not a regulatory formula.
- Check the first statement. Confirm that the lender booked the intended transaction and tenure. Match instalment, interest, fee and tax entries against the offer documents. If the offer promises delayed cashback, record its stated credit window.
- Get unexplained charges itemized in writing. Contact the issuer or merchant responsible for the line item and keep its response with your offer records. The appropriate complaint route depends on the provider and product.
Which fees and taxes to look for
RBI fair-practices guidance says loan fees and charges should be disclosed and customers informed of the all-in cost. It says banks should inform customers of “‘all-in-cost’ … to enable him to compare the rates charges with other sources of finance.” The guidance also addresses written loan terms and copies of loan documents. For covered personal loans, RBI says APR, as applicable, should be disclosed in the KFS and agreement; coverage depends on the facility.
The guidance says application forms should disclose processing fees and related charges, and that subsequently levying undisclosed charges is unfair practice. A no-cost label is not a substitute for checking the actual fee schedule.

GST treatment depends on the type of charge. CBIC explains that loan interest or discount is exempt insofar as the consideration is represented by interest or discount, while service or administrative charges collected over and above it are taxable consideration. CBIC separately notes that the cited exemption excludes interest on outstanding credit-card balances. These distinctions do not establish a universal GST rate or treatment for every EMI line item.

Fees are offer-specific, not universal. For example, an ICICI Bank offer document from 2025 specifies an EMI processing fee of 2.99%, capped at ₹299, plus GST. Axis Bank/Flipkart terms refer to processing or cancellation charges under bank policies. Treat these only as examples: check the current terms for your transaction.

Compare more than the monthly instalment
A low EMI can make a purchase easier to fit into a monthly budget without making it the cheapest option overall. Compare the cash purchase with the EMI using the final rupee total after fees, taxes and guaranteed discounts. Also consider whether a cashback is delayed or conditional, how the tenure affects cash flow, and what happens if you return the item, miss a payment or close the plan early. RBI consumer guidance cautions, in its home-loan context, that EMI alone is not enough to assess loan cost; the broader lesson is to consider amount, term, rate, APR and fees without treating home-loan-specific provisions as rules for card EMI.

- Checkout receipt or screenshot showing the price, discount, financed amount and tenure.
- The offer terms and confirmation, plus the KFS or agreement if supplied.
- The issuer’s current schedule of charges.
- The first statement and any later statement showing a promised cashback or adjustment.
Use these records to check whether the booked principal, interest, fees, taxes and merchant benefit match what you accepted. One ICICI debit-card EMI facility says its merchant-provided no-cost benefit may take up to 90 days as cashback; that timing applies to the described facility, not all offers. If a written offer and statement do not match, ask the responsible issuer or merchant for an itemized explanation.
