To check whether a Nintendo Switch game will work on your console, identify the exact console model and game edition, then check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility information. This matters especially when playing a Nintendo Switch game on Nintendo Switch 2: many are compatible, but Nintendo says some may not be supported or may have limited functionality.
1. Identify your console and the exact game
First, confirm which console you own: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. Then note the game’s exact title and whether the package or store listing identifies it as a Nintendo Switch game or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. The edition label alone does not establish whether every feature works on an older console.

Search for the exact game title, rather than relying on a general statement about backward compatibility.

Read the result and any notes about unsupported features, controls, accessories, or partial functionality. Nintendo says compatibility information may change as testing and updates continue.

Nintendo’s guidance is that Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but not every title is guaranteed to work fully. Its UK guidance puts the caveat plainly: “The Nintendo Switch 2 console’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”

3. Check whether the game needs an original Switch controller or accessory
A game can launch and still have a control or accessory limitation. Nintendo lists some Switch games and features that need original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con for particular uses on Switch 2. Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they do not attach to it; Nintendo says you need a Switch console or a compatible charging accessory to charge them.
- Ring Fit Adventure: Nintendo says you can play on Switch 2 by attaching original Switch Joy-Con to the included Ring-Con. Joy-Con 2 do not attach to the Ring-Con.
- 1-2-Switch: Features that use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original Joy-Con (R).
- Nintendo Labo: Nintendo notes physical-fit or controller requirements for Labo kits, as well as differences in the experience.
These are examples, not a complete compatibility list. Check your own title’s entry and make sure you have any required original controller or accessory. The old Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2, so do not assume other original Switch hardware will carry over unchanged.

4. Separate base-game compatibility from Switch 2 Edition features
A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is the original game bundled with an upgrade pack. Depending on the title, the pack may add visual improvements, features, or modes; its contents and availability vary. The added features are playable only on Switch 2.
Some owners of eligible physical or digital Switch games can buy an upgrade pack for that title. An upgrade is not required simply to play the original Switch game, and not every Switch game has a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack. If you want the enhancements, verify that the specific title offers them and that the version or upgrade you are buying is the right one. Nintendo explains Switch 2 Editions and upgrade packs.
5. Confirm access to a digital game
For a digital copy, check that the console you intend to use can access the Nintendo Account and license associated with the purchase. Nintendo’s guidance describes virtual game cards for use across up to two consoles, as well as online-access conditions for other consoles. A title’s compatibility does not by itself confirm that your account or license arrangement is ready. See Nintendo’s digital-game guidance for the applicable access details.
What the compatibility check does—and does not—tell you
Nintendo’s title lookup is the best starting point for a Switch game you want to use on Switch 2, but compatibility can involve more than whether a game starts. Check the notes for controls, accessories, or specific features, and distinguish those from optional Switch 2 Edition enhancements. Nintendo’s listings can change as testing and software updates continue, so consult the current entry when making a purchase or troubleshooting a game.
