Check the museum’s official page for the specific exhibit, then review its visitor information and closure notices for your planned date. General museum opening hours do not confirm that every gallery or exhibit will be available. Check again shortly before you leave: a museum may close a gallery at short notice.
How to check an exhibit’s status
- Find the exhibit’s page on the museum’s official website. Confirm its scheduled dates cover the day you plan to visit, and look for a current status notice or exhibit-specific ticket information.
- Check the museum’s visitor, hours, or closures page. Look for notices about the relevant gallery or room, including maintenance, installation, special events, temporary closures, and last-entry restrictions. A planned-closures list may also link to details on the affected gallery page.
- Compare the notice with your exact visit date. An exhibition’s advertised run dates do not necessarily mean it is open on every day in that period. For example, National Museums NI’s Ulster Museum page displayed a temporary-closure notice for “Ashes to Fashion” while listing the exhibition’s run through 3 January 2027. That status is a dated snapshot, not a current guarantee; check the live page before travelling.
- Review booking messages and ticket terms. If you have booked, check your email and the museum’s instructions for changes. The Ulster Museum’s notice directed pre-booked visitors to check email for further information.
- Check again close to departure. If the exhibit is central to your visit and the online information is unclear, use the museum’s official visitor contact details to ask about that specific exhibit and date.

| Information channel | Best for | What it may not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Official exhibit page | Scheduled run dates, exhibit details, and exhibit-specific tickets. | Whether an unexpected closure has occurred since the page was updated. |
| Official visitor, hours, or closures page | General opening hours, planned gallery closures, and wider visitor notices. | Availability of a particular exhibit unless the notice names it or its gallery. |
| Museum email or direct contact | Following instructions for ticket holders or clarifying an ambiguous notice. | A guarantee that the status will not change after you check. |
There is no single cross-museum status service established by these official sources. Prefer information that comes from the museum, identifies the relevant exhibit or room, applies to your date, and is recent. Search snippets, old articles, third-party listings, and general opening hours are not substitutes for a current exhibit-specific check.

A museum can be open while a gallery or exhibition is closed. The British Museum publishes planned gallery closures and says galleries may also close at short notice. It cautions: “Occasionally we may need to close galleries at short notice. We regret that we are not always able to alert visitors in advance of their visit.” The American Museum of Natural History likewise notes that some exhibitions and amenities may temporarily close for maintenance or events.
#1 Best Overall
These notices make the official website the best available pre-visit check, not a promise that an exhibit will remain open until you arrive. Rechecking shortly before departure matters most when a particular exhibit is the main reason for your trip.
Check whether exhibit admission needs its own ticket
Do not assume general museum entry includes every exhibition. The British Museum points visitors to exhibition pages for exhibition tickets and advises booking museum entry in advance to receive key information and updates. Requirements vary by venue and exhibit, so check the specific exhibit’s official booking page and ticket terms before you go.

The Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department advises visitors to check a museum’s official website for opening dates and times and to read the exhibition introduction before travelling. That is useful general planning advice, but it is not a live exhibit-status service; check the particular museum’s current notices as well.
