You cannot prove a mod is harmless from a badge, antivirus scan, or download count alone. You can reduce risk by getting it from the game or mod platform’s official page, checking the security status of the exact file, and stopping when its source or contents do not make sense.
Start with the source, not the download link
Open the game’s official mod area or go directly to the recognized platform’s website or client. Be wary of links that redirect to unexpected mirrors, direct-message archives, or a separate site that asks you to sign in. Steam warns that malware may be disguised as cheats, fake demos or betas, and gaming-related utilities, including mod managers. A platform’s checks apply within the limits of its own download and review process. For example, CurseForge says it scans files downloaded directly through its app or website, but cannot scan or verify modpack files sent by friends and imported through the app in the same way. Importing an archive into an official client does not make its contents equivalent to a direct platform download. CurseForge’s safety guidance
Check the status of the exact file
Do not rely only on the project page’s general reputation. On Nexus Mods, each file in the Files tab has its own security indicator. The status describes what checks were completed for that file, not a universal guarantee of safety. Nexus Mods says its help page was last updated December 31, 2024. On Nexus Mods, clicking the indicator opens the VirusTotal report. Treat that report as additional evidence, not a safety certificate: a warning needs investigation, while a clean result cannot establish that a file is harmless in every circumstance. Nexus Mods: Virus Scanning at Nexus Mods
Check whether the file fits the mod
Before downloading, see whether the page explains what the mod changes, which files it should contain, and how it is installed. The file type and instructions should fit the stated purpose. Pause if a mod unexpectedly requires an executable, a nested archive, or files unrelated to its advertised function. Uploader history is context, not proof. Nexus suggests considering a file’s downloads, endorsements, and how long it has been available. For an archive sent by a friend or found outside a platform, you may not have the file-level checks, moderation, or clear provenance available on an official project page. CurseForge lists these as warning signs:

- Someone pressures you to join a server quickly or claims a download is required.
- The pack is unusually small or contains unfamiliar JARs or unexpected executables.
- Installation instructions tell you to leave the platform’s app or website.
- The message relies on emotional urgency or a deadline.
- An archive contains overrides unrelated to the pack’s stated contents.
Do not assume an official client has verified an externally supplied archive simply because it can import it. When the contents or origin are unclear, do not install it. CurseForge’s safety guidance
Respond carefully to antivirus warnings
Some mods can trigger false positives because their behavior or file structure resembles malware. That possibility is not a reason to disable protection or run a flagged file. Compare the platform’s file status, any available scan report, the mod’s stated contents, and its history. If the platform quarantines a file, wait for its review or use the platform’s reporting and support process rather than trying to bypass the block. Make a practical download decision
Use these checks together; no one badge, scan, or popularity signal proves safety.

If important details remain unexplained, wait for clarification from the platform or author, or choose not to download. Platforms document their own processes; there is no universal safety score or guarantee that a scan catches every malicious file. If you think you installed an infected file
CurseForge’s guidance for its June 2023 incident recommended running its detection tool, using additional independent malware scans if an infection was found, and changing important passwords.
