If MetaMask labels a request Malicious, do not connect your wallet or sign—close the site. For a Warning, pause and independently verify the exact URL, contract address, and transaction before deciding whether to proceed. Never follow an urgent message’s link or disclose your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP). An alert is a risk signal, not a guarantee that every threat will be caught.
First, identify where the alert appeared
A warning displayed inside your MetaMask wallet while you inspect a website, address, token, or transaction is different from an unsolicited email, text, popup, or direct message claiming to be MetaMask Support. A message can imitate MetaMask branding without coming from MetaMask.

MetaMask says its support team does not initiate unsolicited contact and does not handle support cases by phone, direct message, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or several other social channels. To check a support claim, open the MetaMask Support website yourself and use its Contact Support entry point. Do not use a link in the message you are checking.

| Wallet label | What MetaMask says it indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Warning | Potential risk. | Pause. Check the exact URL or contract address against the project’s official information, reached independently. Review what the transaction or signature would do before considering it. |
| Malicious | High-confidence harmful activity. | Do not connect your wallet or sign. Close the site. |
MetaMask describes security alerts as signals associated with scams, phishing, impersonation, or other harmful activity. Its checks draw on on-chain analysis, ecosystem intelligence, and security partners, including Blockaid. Transaction simulations can help identify requests that might cause loss, but MetaMask says the checks cannot detect every threat and do not prevent you from confirming a transaction. The company puts the limit plainly: “Security alerts are designed to help you identify potential threats — but you remain in control of your wallet and transaction decisions.” MetaMask’s alert guidance

Check the identity behind the warning
Compare the complete URL or contract address
Do not rely on a familiar logo, project name, token ticker, or sender display name. Compare the full website address or contract address with the project’s official documentation or verified source. Reach the project’s channels independently—for example, by typing a known address or using a bookmark you already trust—not through the suspicious alert or message.
Inspect the requested action
Before approving anything, understand what the transaction or signature authorizes. If you cannot tell what it does, or the explanation does not match the task you intended, do not sign. A reassuring project name does not make an unexpected approval safe.

Treat trust indicators as clues, not proof
MetaMask says trust indicators are informational, not an endorsement or safety guarantee. A missing Verified badge does not by itself establish that a token or site is unsafe; a Verified token label is not investment advice and does not guarantee safety or value. Use these labels alongside independent identity checks rather than as a final verdict. MetaMask’s security-alert and trust-indicator guidance
Recognize fake support messages and credential traps
A request to reveal your SRP is a stop signal. MetaMask says it will not ask for the phrase in an email or support contact. Its guidance also says not to enter the SRP on a website; legitimate occasions to enter it are limited to confirming wallet setup or restoring a wallet/resetting its password. An alert demanding an SRP, wallet password, Google or Apple account details, KYC to keep the wallet active, or an urgent “verify,” “upgrade,” or “restore” action is a strong phishing indicator. For an email, check the actual sender address, not just the display name. MetaMask says ticket correspondence is expected only after you opened a support ticket. Marketing, community, or card-related messages may have different senders and contexts, so a MetaMask label alone does not tell you whether an email is a support request. If unsure, contact support through the help center you opened independently rather than replying or clicking. MetaMask’s email guidance
Report an alert that appears to be wrong
If a classification seems mistaken, MetaMask says transaction alerts may provide See details and Report an issue. For a URL, token, or address classification, contact official support through the independently opened help center. Include what was flagged, the network, a screenshot, and official project links that help establish the project’s identity. Reviews are handled case by case and may take several business days, depending on complexity and verification requirements. MetaMask’s reporting guidance

What alert checks share—and what they do not
When security alerts are enabled, MetaMask says transaction and signature requests are sent to a MetaMask server for EVM checks or to Blockaid for non-EVM checks. The listed data may include the dapp URL, JSON-RPC method, chain ID, and transaction data. MetaMask says the SRP, private keys, and other credentials are not shared with those providers. This describes the alert-checking process; it does not establish that a particular request is safe to approve. MetaMask’s security-alert data details
