Start with Wizards of the Coast’s Reserved List, then check official product announcements and card lists. If a card is not on the list, it is eligible for reprint—not necessarily planned or likely to appear soon. Wizards publishes no general odds for a specific card, so print history and set fit can inform a cautious judgment but cannot produce a reliable percentage.
What counts as a reprint?
For a practical check, distinguish a new printing of the same card from a card that merely has a similar name, role, or theme. Wizards’ design commentary discusses exact reprints alongside changes in flavor, creature type, and template; those changes can make a related card different from a straightforward reprint. Use Gatherer, which Wizards Support identifies as its official card database, to confirm the card’s identity and browse its history.

Check the Reserved List first
Compare the exact card name with Wizards’ Official Reprint Policy and its current Reserved List. The policy says listed cards will not be printed again in a functionally identical form. It describes functional identity by reference to card type, subtypes, abilities, mana cost, power, and toughness. It also says the list will not gain cards and that cards will not be removed.

The policy applies to physical printed cards and tournament-legal Magic cards; Wizards separately notes special-purpose versions not intended for regular gameplay. So avoid the overly broad claim that a Reserved List card’s name can never appear in any form. The relevant policy restriction is on printing a functionally identical card.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
If the card is on the list
Report the policy restriction and explain its functional-identity scope. Do not describe the card as impossible to reference or reimagine in any special-purpose form.
If the card is not on the list
It is eligible under the policy. Wizards explicitly cautions that exclusion from the list does not indicate plans to reprint a particular card. Eligibility is a policy status, not a forecast.

Look for an official announcement
Check Wizards’ product archive, relevant set announcements, and the official card lists linked from them. A named appearance in an official list confirms that printing. If the card does not appear in the materials available when you check, the accurate conclusion is only that it has not been announced there—not that Wizards has ruled out a reprint.
Recommended Free Tools
- Search the product archive for relevant upcoming or recently announced sets.
- Open the official announcement for a plausible set and follow its card-list links.
- Verify the exact card name and identity in the list rather than relying on a similar card or a rumor.
- Record when you checked: product information and card lists change as Wizards publishes them.
Use history and set fit as context, not proof
Gatherer can show prior printings, but past use does not establish a future schedule or probability. Consider whether the card could fit a set’s theme, mechanics, or gameplay needs. Wizards’ design commentary describes reprints as a way to support enjoyable gameplay, give players access to cards, reuse familiar and understood cards, and conserve design space. These are reasons a card might be chosen, not evidence that a particular card has been selected.

Mark Rosewater’s “Back to the Future Sight” offers historical examples of card-by-card judgments, including whether a card could be reprinted in the right environment. Its categories and examples are retrospective commentary, not a general forecasting model. The article discusses 81 futureshifted cards from the 2007 set; that figure is historical context, not an odds statistic.

Keep policy, confirmation, and inference separate. For a non-Reserved List card with no official announcement, a careful assessment might say: “The card is eligible for reprint and its history or design may fit a future set, but Wizards has not announced it in the sources checked. No published odds establish how likely it is.” For a card on the Reserved List, state the functional-identity restriction instead of implying a broader ban on every possible version.
