You can check a used LEGO set without building it: get the set number, compare the seller’s actual parts with a set-specific inventory, and verify quantities, colors, and variants—not just the total piece count. Before paying, also agree on whether “complete” includes minifigures, stickers, instructions, the box, extra parts, and alternate models.
Start with the set number and a parts reference
Ask the seller for the set number if it is not shown in the listing. LEGO uses set numbers to help locate instructions and replacement pieces through its replacement-pieces service. Find the instructions and a parts inventory for that exact set; a different edition or version may have different parts.

An instruction booklet can help you identify pieces, and some digital instruction manuals include a bill of materials (BOM)—a list of the parts used in the model—at the end. BrickLink Studio also provides set details with parts and quantities, and links to instructions when available. Its import options distinguish regular parts, minifigure parts, and extra parts, so check which categories the displayed inventory includes.
Use BrickLink’s inventory guidance to compare a set against available inventory data. For older or rare sets, the reference may be limited to instructions, a set picture, or a parts list. BrickLink rates a set box or picture as the least reliable reference; prefer instructions or a parts list when available. Its guidance also notes that electronic data can reflect newer bills of materials and part versions that may not yet have circulated physically, and color labels may differ across official sources. Treat the reference as a comparison aid, not proof that every physical release is identical.

Ask for photos of the actual contents
Request clear, current photos of the pieces the seller is offering. Ideally, ask for the parts spread out so small elements are visible, with minifigures and accessories shown separately. If stickers, instructions, or the box matter to you, ask for those to be photographed too. Photos show what is visible in the lot; they cannot establish that pieces hidden under or outside the frame are included.
Compare the contents item by item
- Match the identity. Compare each part with the set inventory, checking its shape, color, and variant. Similar-looking parts are not necessarily interchangeable for inventory purposes.
- Match the quantity. Count each listed part and compare it with the required quantity. Do not rely on the pile’s overall size or a rough total.
- Check minifigures and their components separately. Confirm the figures, heads, torsos, legs, accessories, and any other listed minifigure parts. A model can look nearly buildable while a figure or a small required element is missing.
- Account for the inventory’s scope. Find out whether the reference includes extra parts, minifigure parts, or parts for alternate models, then compare the same categories with the seller’s lot.
BrickLink’s inventory process calls for checking variants and matching the total quantity, including minifigure parts, against the piece count printed on the box. That total is a useful final cross-check, but it does not replace item-by-item matching: the wrong part or color can leave the total unchanged.

Agree on what “complete” means
Ask the seller to list what is included rather than relying on a condition label. BrickLink’s definition of a complete used set covers the parts needed to build all models shown in the instructions, including alternate models. Under that definition, the original box and extra parts are not required. Instructions and stickers are treated separately: if instructions are missing, its guidance says the listing must disclose that; the original stickers should be included, either on the sheet or applied.

These details matter especially when you want a display-ready or collectible set rather than only enough pieces to build a model.
Price missing pieces before you buy
If the comparison finds a shortfall, ask the seller to confirm it and note the exact part numbers, colors, and quantities missing. Check the LEGO replacement-pieces route and parts-catalog information such as BrickLink’s catalog to see whether replacements are available and what they cost. Availability and price depend on the specific piece and can change, so verify them at the time of purchase. Then decide whether the set is still worth buying with the shortfall included in your cost.

What a check can and cannot establish
This method can establish whether the visible lot matches a set-specific parts reference and clarify what the seller says is included. It cannot prove that unphotographed pieces are in the box, that every physical release matches the inventory exactly, or that replacement parts will be available at a particular price. For a specific listing, the answer depends on its set number, the seller’s photos and disclosure, and the reference inventory you use.
