You can’t reliably prove that a leaked game download is safe before installing it. A virus scan, a clean result from a reputation service, or a digital signature cannot make an untrusted copy trustworthy. The safest choice is not to run it: delete the download and get the game from its official publisher or a reputable storefront.
Why a leaked game download is hard to verify
The main risk is its source. The FBI advises against downloading pirated software, including video games, and recommends official, trusted application stores. Microsoft warns that third-party websites and peer-to-peer downloads can bundle unwanted or malicious software. A file may also be altered or repackaged, so its name and appearance do not establish where it came from.

Counterfeit download pages are another route to malicious installers. In a September 1, 2026 report, Microsoft described a specific campaign using fake software-download websites that impersonated trusted vendors and distributed installers capable of establishing persistence and attempting to weaken security protections. That report documents one campaign; it does not mean every fake page or game download uses the same methods.

What checks can—and cannot—tell you
Source and download path
Consider whether the link came directly from the publisher or a reputable storefront. Unexpected redirects, look-alike publisher pages, unsolicited links, and bundled download managers are reasons for more caution, not ways to verify a file. Microsoft’s consumer guidance warns that third-party and peer-to-peer downloads can carry bundled malware.
Publisher signature
A valid digital signature can help identify the publisher of a signed file, but it is not a blanket safety guarantee. An absent, invalid, or unexpected signature is a warning sign. Even if one component of a leaked package is signed, that does not establish that the whole package is safe or authorized. Microsoft lists publisher signing among the factors users can consider in its SmartScreen FAQ.

SmartScreen and antivirus alerts
Take a security warning seriously. At the same time, Microsoft says an uncommon-download Application Reputation warning is not, by itself, proof that a download is malicious. SmartScreen considers several signals, including the publisher signature, how the download was reached, and whether the program’s reputation matches its expected popularity. These are context clues, not a pass/fail test for a leaked installer.
A scan that reports no detection—or a low detection count—does not certify a file as safe. Scanners can provide useful warnings, but a result is limited to what the tool recognizes at that time. “Not detected as malware” also does not mean “trustworthy”: Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications, which can show unwanted ads, use a PC for cryptomining, or install unexpected apps.

What to do before opening the download
- Do not run any part of the package. This includes the installer, crack, key generator, patcher, or files that ask you to disable antivirus protection.
- Delete the unauthorized download. Get the game from its official publisher or a reputable storefront instead. The FBI’s guidance is to use official, trusted application stores.
- Leave security protections enabled. Keep Windows, your browser, and security intelligence updated, and do not turn off real-time protection to make a crack or installer run. Microsoft recommends updated antivirus protection, software updates, and trusted download sources.
- Think about privacy before uploading a file. Do not submit a private or sensitive file to a public multi-engine scanning service without first considering its privacy implications. The sources cited here do not establish any particular service’s current retention or sharing terms.
If you already ran the installer
Treat suspicious behavior or a security alert as a possible compromise. Use updated security tools to check the device. Microsoft recommends updating security intelligence and running a full scan; if unwanted software persists, Microsoft Defender Offline is another option.
If you suspect accounts or credentials may be affected, use a clean device to contact the relevant account providers, regain control of accounts, change passwords, and add account alerts. The FBI says reinstalling the operating system may be necessary if antivirus software cannot sanitize an infected device; that is a possible escalation, not a step required in every case.
