Record temperatures, sustained clocks, performance and noise. A pad that fits your screen size can still miss the vents, while a simple elevation change may deliver most of the benefit.
What a cooling pad can—and cannot—change
A cooling pad supplies one or more fans beneath the laptop. Its useful effect depends on three things: where the laptop draws air, how the pad moves air, and how hard the laptop is working. The same pad can produce a large improvement on one chassis, a small change on another, and almost none on a model whose intakes do not line up with the fans.

Raising the rear of a laptop can also help without powered airflow. More clearance may reduce the restriction created by a desk, lap or soft surface. Testing elevation separately tells you whether a fan is adding anything beyond that extra clearance.
Do not use a universal temperature promise as your decision rule. Independent tests show different outcomes on different laptops, and a lower peak temperature does not automatically mean faster or steadier performance. Your result should be based on repeatable measurements from your own machine.

Inspect the laptop before choosing a pad
Map the intake and exhaust vents
Turn the laptop off and examine its underside. Long grille sections, perforated panels and openings near the fans are common intake areas. Exhausts are usually along the rear edge or sides, where warm air leaves the chassis. If the direction is unclear, consult the laptop’s manual or the manufacturer’s service diagram.
- Mark the approximate center of each intake area.
- Note whether intakes are concentrated in one zone or spread across the base.
- Identify every exhaust so a pad or stand will not block it.
- Check whether rubber feet create a required air gap; do not cover them with a solid pad surface.
Why screen-size compatibility is insufficient
A listing that says “fits 15-inch laptops” describes physical dimensions, not airflow. A fan can sit under an empty section of the base while the laptop’s intake is several centimeters away. Conversely, a smaller fan aimed at a dense intake grille can work well. Compare the pad’s fan zones with the actual vent map, not just the display size.
Account for obstructions and stability
The pad should support the laptop securely at every angle and leave its exhausts open. Avoid setups in which the laptop slides forward, a rear exhaust blows into the pad’s frame, or a loose stand partially covers an intake. A stable unpowered stand is useful for the elevation-only part of the test even if you later buy a powered cooler.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEstablish a baseline you can repeat
Choose one sustained workload
Select a task that represents the heat problem you are trying to solve: the same game scene or benchmark loop, a long compile, a video export, or another repeatable load. Use the identical scene, settings and resolution on every run. An idle reading cannot be compared fairly with a loaded reading.
Keep the laptop’s operating conditions fixed
Use the normal power mode and fan profile that you use when the problem occurs. Keep the charger connected if that is your normal gaming or production setup. Do not change operating-system power settings, graphics modes, room location or background applications between conditions.
Warm up before logging
Start the workload and allow the laptop to reach its normal sustained state before recording results. Use the same warm-up period each time, then log for the same interval. The published tests cited below use different durations, so their numbers illustrate possible outcomes rather than a universal procedure.

Record more than a peak temperature
Log CPU temperature, GPU temperature, sustained clock speeds and workload performance. Depending on the application, performance may be a frame rate, benchmark score, render time or completed work. If noise matters, measure it from a consistent location and with the same room conditions. Record fan speed or the pad’s speed setting as well.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Condition | What it isolates | Required controls |
|---|---|---|
| Flat on a hard, level surface | Your normal baseline | Normal power mode, fan profile, workload and warm-up |
| Raised on an unpowered stand | Benefit from clearance alone | Same laptop position, workload, interval and room |
| Powered cooling pad | Clearance plus directed airflow | Same position and controls; align fans with intakes |
Run the three-condition test
- Prepare the monitoring tools. Use a hardware monitor or the telemetry built into your benchmark to capture CPU and GPU temperatures and clocks. Choose one performance metric and decide where a sound-level meter or phone will sit if you are measuring noise.
- Run the flat baseline. Place the laptop on a hard, level surface with all vents clear. Apply the chosen workload, complete the fixed warm-up, and log the agreed interval. Save the average or sustained values, not only the highest instantaneous spike.
- Repeat with elevation only. Put the laptop on a stable stand that has no powered fan. Keep the rear raised by the same stand position for every elevation run. Repeat the warm-up and workload exactly, then save the same measurements.
- Install the powered pad. Place the laptop so the pad’s fan zones sit beneath the intake grilles. Keep every exhaust open. Set a documented pad speed, such as maximum for a stress comparison or the speed you would actually use day to day.
- Repeat the workload. Use the same power profile, scene, warm-up, logging interval and monitoring location. Record pad speed, CPU and GPU values, clocks, performance and noise.
- Repeat runs when practical. Two or more runs per condition reduce the chance that a background task, room-temperature change or an unusually short boost period determines the result. Compare averages or sustained sections from matching intervals.
Separate the fan’s benefit from the stand’s benefit
A simple comparison is:
temperature with elevation only − temperature with the powered pad = additional temperature change associated with the pad’s fan
Use matching sustained values, such as the average CPU temperature during the final five minutes of each run. A positive, repeatable difference suggests the powered airflow is doing more than the added clearance. This calculation is a comparison method described in HAVIT’s guide, not a guaranteed result for any HAVIT product or for your laptop.
Apply the same logic to performance and noise. If elevation and the pad produce nearly identical clocks and workload scores, the fan may not justify its noise or cost. If the pad alone prevents clock drops or thermal-limit events, its airflow is providing a useful benefit even when the temperature difference looks modest.
Decide what the measurements mean
| Observed pattern | Likely interpretation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Elevation and powered pad both improve temperatures similarly | Clearance is doing most of the work | Use a stable stand or choose a quiet pad only if it adds ergonomic or noise benefits |
| Powered pad is cooler than elevation and clocks stay higher | Directed airflow is reaching useful intake areas | Compare the sustained performance gain with the pad’s noise and price |
| Temperature falls but clocks and performance do not change | The laptop was not performance-limited by temperature in that workload | Judge the pad on comfort, fan noise and headroom rather than speed |
| Pad temperature is unchanged or higher | Fans may miss the intakes, airflow may be weak, or the setup may obstruct an exhaust | Recheck alignment, speed, surface contact and vent clearance |
| Noise rises sharply for a small temperature change | The cooling trade-off may not suit everyday use | Test a lower pad speed and compare sustained results again |
Look for sustained clocks and thermal-limit events, not just a lower maximum. A processor may briefly report a cooler peak while still reducing its clock later, or it may run at the same clock because another limit—not temperature—is controlling performance.
What published tests actually show
TechRadar: large differences on one Acer gaming laptop
In a 2026 TechRadar test, Josh Russell ran a 15-minute 3DMark Steel Nomad stress test on an Acer Predator Helios 300 with an Nvidia RTX 3080. The pads were set to maximum and a thermal camera measured the hottest point before and after. The reported temperature rise was 31.9°C with the baseline setup, 12°C with the Llano V10 and 8°C with the Llano RGB Laptop Cooling Pad.

Those figures are rises recorded on that laptop during that test, not guaranteed reductions for another model. The report also described inconsistent results when the Klim Mistral was retested, reinforcing the need to verify a pad on the individual chassis.
WIRED: fan-off and fan-on conditions were not equivalent
Luke Larsen’s WIRED comparison used a Razer Blade 16 and 3DMark Time Spy. The reported maximum CPU temperatures were 85°C with no pad, 85°C with a Targus Chill Mat, 86°C with the Razer pad’s fan off, 77°C with its fan on and 75°C with Hyperboost enabled in that setup.
| WIRED condition | Maximum CPU temperature |
|---|---|
| No pad | 85°C |
| Targus Chill Mat | 85°C |
| Razer pad, fan off | 86°C |
| Razer pad, fan on | 77°C |
| Hyperboost | 75°C |
The benchmark score also changed between conditions. The comparison demonstrates why a basic fan mat and a powered cooler designed to move air through a particular laptop should not be treated as interchangeable. Larsen wrote, “As I found in my testing, they can actually bring down temperatures and offer better performance.” His statement describes the reported test, not a promise for every laptop.
Notebookcheck: cooling came with more noise
An older 2020 Notebookcheck test used an MSI GP65 running The Witcher 3 with a Havit cooler pad. Average CPU temperature fell from 92°C without the pad to 80°C with it, while average GPU temperature fell from 76°C to 70°C. Combined fan noise increased from 53.9 to 59.2 dB(A).
The article notes that intake design changes the outcome. Because the test is from 2020 and covers one laptop and one environment, use it as an example of a possible temperature/noise trade-off, not as a current ranking.
HAVIT’s current guide: useful framework, not independent product evidence
HAVIT updated its guide on October 10, 2026. It recommends separating elevation from powered airflow and tracking temperatures alongside clocks, throttling, performance and noise. Its illustrative scenario is explicitly modeled rather than a laboratory measurement of a HAVIT model, so it should not be quoted as observed product data.

When a stand is enough
If your elevation-only run produces the desired sustained temperatures and clocks, a stand may be the simpler answer. It has no fan motor, adds no electrical noise and tests whether airflow restriction was the main problem. A stand is also useful when your laptop’s intake area does not line up with common pad fan zones.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose a powered pad when the aligned fan produces a repeatable improvement beyond elevation, prevents thermal throttling, or maintains performance during your real workload. The improvement should be large enough to justify the pad’s sound, power connection, desk space and cleaning requirements.
Common testing mistakes and fixes
Comparing unlike workloads
Running a benchmark on the baseline and a game on the pad invalidates the comparison. Use the same executable, scene, settings and duration.
Using a single screenshot
Short boost behavior and background tasks can move a peak by several degrees. Save a time series or sustained average and repeat the run.
Blocking an exhaust
Reposition the laptop if warm air blows into the pad’s frame or a stand wall. An obstructed exhaust can erase any intake benefit.

Changing fan profiles between conditions
Keep the laptop’s own profile fixed. If you want to compare profiles, make that a separate experiment with the same three physical conditions.
Ignoring room temperature
Run conditions close together in the same room, and note unusual changes. A cooler room can look like a pad improvement.
Measuring noise inconsistently
Keep the meter at one distance and angle. Record whether the laptop fans, pad fans or both are running; otherwise the dB(A) values are not comparable.
Use a return-period buying test
If you buy a pad, preserve its packaging and verify the seller’s return terms before opening it. During the return window, perform the three-condition test with your real workload. Confirm that the fan zones align with the intake grilles at the angle you will use, that the laptop is stable, and that the pad does not obstruct exhausts or ports.
- Check the lowest pad speed you can tolerate, not only maximum speed.
- Compare sustained clocks and performance, not temperature alone.
- Measure noise from your normal seated position.
- Repeat after the laptop and pad have reached steady temperature.
- Keep the pad only if its repeatable benefit matches your reason for buying it.
A concise decision rule
Keep the cooling pad when its aligned airflow produces a repeatable improvement beyond elevation alone and that improvement matters to your workload—steadier clocks, fewer thermal-limit events, better frame delivery or shorter completion time. Prefer a stand when raising the laptop delivers the same practical result without the added noise. Treat independent test numbers as examples tied to their named laptops and setups, never as your expected temperature drop.
