To find out whether a particular horror game will run on your PC, compare the game’s current system requirements with your computer’s exact operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. On Windows, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) can help you identify your components. Meeting a game’s minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth performance or high frame rates.
Will this horror game run on my PC?
There is no universal PC specification for horror games. Requirements are set for an individual game and can differ by edition, platform, and update. Use the current listing for the exact game and version you intend to buy—not the requirements for a similarly named release or another platform.

If you are buying on Steam, scroll to the game’s System Requirements section on its Store page. Steam says the Store page lists each game’s requirements. For another storefront or a direct purchase, check that seller’s listing or the publisher’s current requirements. Steam’s performance guidance explains how to use system requirements when troubleshooting.
What should you compare?
Check every listed requirement rather than judging compatibility from a single component or the PC’s marketing name.

- Operating system: Match the supported Windows, macOS, or Linux version. Check architecture too; a game may specifically require 64-bit Windows. A powerful processor and graphics card cannot make an unsupported operating system compatible. Steam’s operating-system guidance describes this issue.
- Processor (CPU): Compare the exact model with the one named in the requirements. Do not assume that a higher-looking model number or a newer PC automatically meets a game’s CPU requirement.
- System memory (RAM): Compare the installed amount with the minimum and recommended figures separately.
- Graphics card (GPU): Compare the actual GPU model. Note any stated video memory (VRAM) or graphics API requirement, such as a specified DirectX version.
- Available storage: Make sure the intended drive has enough free space for the listed requirement.
- Other conditions: Check for any stated networking, sound, or additional requirements.
Requirements can include more than a list of parts. For example, a Square Enix PC Steam requirements page lists operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX version, storage, and target settings or performance for one specific game. Its figures are not a standard for horror games generally.
How to find your PC’s specifications in Windows
Use DxDiag to collect a Windows system report. Capcom’s Steam-game troubleshooting steps say the report can show the GPU model and VRAM.

- Open the Windows Run dialog.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to gather information.
- Select Save All Information… to save a report you can check while comparing your PC with the game listing.
Use Windows system information and your PC or graphics-card manufacturer’s documentation if you need to confirm a precise CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage detail.

Read minimum and recommended specifications as separate reference points. Steam Support cautions: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” A minimum match is not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or smooth experience.

If your PC meets the minimum but falls short of the recommended specifications, the publisher may suggest lowering graphics settings. That can be a reasonable compromise, but it is not a guarantee that every performance or compatibility problem will be fixed. The result depends on the game and your configuration. Compare the GPU model itself, not just the laptop’s model name or advertised graphics capability. Steam notes that integrated graphics are generally less powerful than dedicated graphics and may provide lower performance. Laptop-class and dual-GPU configurations can also have additional support or configuration considerations, as Capcom notes in its troubleshooting guidance. Do not assume that a mobile GPU performs like a desktop version with a similar name.

What should you do if your PC falls short?
First identify which requirement is not met, then consider the smallest practical response. If the PC is below recommended but meets minimum, check whether the publisher’s advice on reduced settings is acceptable for you. If a specific hardware requirement is below minimum, a compatible upgrade might help—but the right change depends on that shortfall and whether your PC can support the upgrade. Steam notes that graphics-card and memory upgrades can affect gameplay; that is not a recommendation to buy a particular part without checking your system first. Can you rely on a refund if the game does not work?
Refund rules depend on the seller, so check the policy for the store where you will buy the game. Steam’s stated standard offer for games and software applications is a refund within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime, subject to its policy terms and exceptions. The page also says Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party keys. These are Steam-specific terms, not a general guarantee from every seller. Read Steam’s current refund policy before relying on it; the page states it was last updated April 23, 2024.
