Start with the clip’s earliest available source, then compare it with Rockstar’s official GTA VI media library. A match is official published footage; a clip that is absent from the library is simply not listed there—not automatically fake or a confirmed leak. Unless Rockstar or independently verifiable source evidence establishes its origin, describe an unfamiliar clip as unverified.
Check the source before judging the footage
- Find the earliest available post. Note the account, date, context and whether it provides an original file or only a cropped, re-encoded repost. A repost, caption or high view count does not establish where a clip came from.
- Compare it with Rockstar’s published footage. The official GTA VI media library, checked October 4, 2026, lists three videos—An Extended Look, Trailer 2 and Trailer 1—plus nine clips, including character clips. If the clip matches, call it official published footage and link to Rockstar’s version. If it does not appear there, say it is not in the checked library; absence does not prove fabrication.
- Look for direct confirmation of the specific clip. Evidence that some development footage leaked does not verify a different video. Ask whether Rockstar has confirmed this footage, rather than whether a post or community calls it real.
- State what you can establish. If the source cannot be independently checked, say “Rockstar has not published this clip in its media library” or “the clip’s origin has not been independently verified.” Avoid “confirmed real” unless there is evidence for that particular clip.

Why visual clues cannot settle authenticity
Camera movement, spelling, HUD details, watermarks and continued availability may prompt closer scrutiny, but none is a conclusive forensic test. A polished image can be fabricated, and an awkward-looking clip is not necessarily genuine. Reporting on alleged August 2026 leaks described uncertainty about the clips’ origins and age, and documented AI-generated fakes circulating alongside alleged leaks. At the time, viewers could not establish authenticity from visual or social-media clues alone (GamesRadar; IGN).
A takedown is also not an authentication report. Rockstar Support’s policy says: “Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained.” The policy page was last updated January 10, 2025. Removal is consistent with that policy, but it does not independently prove a clip’s claimed source or build (Rockstar Support).

What the 2022 breach does—and does not—prove
Rockstar confirmed that a 2022 network intrusion involved confidential data, including early development footage. That confirms genuine development material existed among the material involved in that incident; it does not authenticate every later video labelled a GTA VI leak (GamesRadar).
Claims about later footage need their own evidence. In reporting about alleged August 2026 clips, their origins and age were described as unclear; a separate report said Rockstar had not officially confirmed the circulating footage as of August 21, 2026. Those reports describe that period, not a permanent status for every clip that may circulate later (GamesRadar; IGN).

Be careful with leaked pre-release footage
Rockstar Support says it will take down in-game footage from leaked copies posted before the official release date, regardless of how the game was obtained. If a clip appears to be leaked pre-release footage, avoid reposting it; a removal should not be presented as proof that its alleged provenance is true (Rockstar Support).
