Verify a suspected U.S. government benefit payment by contacting the agency that supposedly issued it through an official website, account portal, or phone number you find independently. Do not rely on a logo, caller ID, a link in a message, or information supplied by the sender. For a federal Treasury check, use the Treasury Check Verification System; other deposits, notices, and state benefits require the relevant program’s own verification route.
Start with the payment type and the agency named
Work out what the communication claims to be: a federal Treasury check, a benefit deposit, a state payment, a notice, or a tax form. The correct verification method depends on the payment and program; there is no single checker for every government benefit.
For a federal check, look for the authorizing agency or payment reason in its memo or issue information. If you cannot identify the agency, USAGov says the Bureau of the Fiscal Service Call Center can help: USAGov’s guidance on checking government payments lists 1-855-868-0151. This federal-check guidance does not establish that the number can identify a state benefit issuer.
Verify through a channel you find yourself
- Open the agency’s official website independently. Type its known address or find it through a trusted government directory; do not follow a link in an unexpected text, email, or social media message.
- Sign in to the official account portal, if the program provides one. Check the payment or case status there, or use contact information published on the agency’s own site.
- Ask the agency to confirm the specific payment. Give only the information needed through its verified channel. If the agency cannot confirm it, ask what official office or process handles that payment type.
- For a Treasury check, use the Treasury Check Verification System. It is intended for Treasury checks, not as a universal verifier for direct deposits, state benefits, or every agency notice. Follow USAGov’s Treasury-check instructions.
For account-access messages, Login.gov recommends visiting the official site or contact page rather than clicking a suspicious link. Its guidance also notes that caller ID can be faked: How to make sure Login.gov messages are real.

Look for scam signals, but verify rather than guess
A suspicious message is not proof that an underlying payment is fake: pause and verify it independently. Treat these tactics as strong warning signs, however:
- Pressure to act immediately, threats of arrest or loss of benefits, or a claim that you have won a prize.
- A request for sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited call, text, email, or social media message.
- A demand to pay using gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, mailed cash, precious metals, or prepaid debit cards.
- A caller who says an official number on your caller ID proves their identity, or who gives a plausible employee name or government logo as proof.
The Social Security Administration describes these patterns in its scam guidance. Caller ID can be spoofed, and a real employee’s name can be misused. SSA says it will not ask for sensitive personal information through social media, email, or text. It also warns: “Legitimate companies and other agencies cannot transfer your phone call directly to SSA or OIG.” The SSA page associates this warning with its July 29, 2026 update about fake call transfers.

Social Security-related communication
For a suspected SSA scam, use the agency’s official guidance and reporting route rather than calling back a number in the message. SSA directs people to report suspected scams to its Office of Inspector General (OIG): SSA scam guidance.

Unemployment deposit, notice, debit card, or Form 1099-G
An unexpected unemployment notice, employer notice, deposit, debit card, or Form 1099-G may mean someone used your identity to file a claim. Do not spend or return an unexpected payment based only on instructions from an unsolicited caller or message. Contact your state unemployment agency using the website or phone number you find on its official site, then follow its fraud process. USAGov explains the warning signs and state-agency route in its unemployment identity-theft guidance.
States issue Form 1099-G to report unemployment compensation. If yours reports benefits you did not receive, the IRS says to report the fraud to the issuing state and request a corrected form. See the IRS guidance on unemployment-benefit identity theft.

FTC refund or settlement payment
A payment described as a government benefit may instead be a refund connected to an FTC case. Check whether the case appears on the FTC’s official refunds page, which lists case details and, where applicable, payment-administrator contact information. FTC guidance says it does not require an upfront fee or ask for sensitive details such as your Social Security number or bank account number to obtain a refund. Verify the case and use contact details listed by the FTC or on the payment materials; do not trust a lookalike website or an unsolicited demand.
Another federal, state, tribal, or local benefit
Use the named program administrator’s official account or contact channel. Rules, application procedures, and deadlines differ among programs, so confirm unfamiliar payments with the agency responsible for that specific benefit rather than applying Treasury-check or SSA instructions to it.

If you already shared information or paid
Stop communicating through the suspicious channel. Contact the affected agency through its independently located official route and report the incident to the authority suited to the claim: SSA OIG for SSA-related scams, the FTC for government imposters, the IRS for tax-related issues, or your state unemployment agency for unemployment fraud. If you disclosed financial account details, contact your bank through its official number and ask what protective steps are appropriate.
For suspected unemployment identity theft, notify the state unemployment agency even if you did not apply for benefits; use its official fraud-reporting process. If you received a Form 1099-G showing benefits you never received, report it to the issuing state and request a corrected form as the IRS directs.
