To check whether a gaming accessory works with your console, match the exact console and accessory model numbers against the manufacturers’ compatibility information, then confirm the connection method, required ports or adapters, and the specific features you want to use. A familiar connector or a “gaming” label alone does not establish compatibility.
1. Identify the exact console and accessory models
Write down the console family and generation, plus its model or revision if available. Find the accessory’s full product name and model number on its label, packaging, manual, or manufacturer support page. This matters because support can differ between products in the same category—and even between revisions of one product.

For example, Logitech’s G935 support page documents compatibility and connection options for that specific headset. Do not assume its details apply to another Logitech headset, or to a similarly named model.

2. Check the accessory maker’s compatibility information
Look for the exact console in the accessory maker’s official support page or manual. Read the connection instructions as well as the supported-platform list: a page may support a console for one connection method or feature but not another. If the exact model or revision is not listed, do not infer support from a broad category such as “headset,” “controller,” or “wireless.”

Then compare the maker’s instructions with the console maker’s documentation. For controllers, PlayStation publishes controller and accessory support details. Sony’s PS5 FAQ advises: “Please consult with your headset’s manufacturer for compatibility questions.” See the PS5: The Ultimate FAQ.
3. Verify the connection route, not just the connector
Determine how the accessory is supposed to connect: console-specific wireless, Bluetooth, a USB receiver, wired USB, or a 3.5 mm audio plug through a controller. These methods are not interchangeable. Check whether the instructions require a particular receiver, licensed version, cable, controller jack, or pairing process.

- Xbox controllers: Xbox describes Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth as connection options for different device types. Its Xbox Wireless Controller product information also identifies a 3.5 mm jack for compatible headsets. - PlayStation Link audio: Sony’s PlayStation Link device support instructions describe a USB adapter connection. Some supported devices can also make a separate Bluetooth connection; that is distinct from the PlayStation Link connection.
- USB and wired accessories: Check the accessory’s specified cable or receiver and the console’s available port. A plug fitting physically is not proof that the console supports the device or its features.
4. Check that the console has the required port
Match the accessory’s requirements to the ports on your exact console revision. On PS5, for instance, Sony’s USB ports guide identifies different USB port types and devices that can connect, including wireless headset adapters. Confirm which port the accessory specifies rather than relying on the shape of a plug or receiver.
5. Confirm the features you care about
“Connects” and “all features work” are different claims. Check separately for microphone and chat, headset controls, surround or spatial audio, controller buttons, remapping, haptics, and any companion-app settings relevant to your use. A device may provide basic audio while other functions are unavailable on that console or connection route.

For keyboard and mouse, distinguish console-level recognition from support within a game. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says the console can support keyboards and mice at system level, while individual game support is determined by the game’s developer. Check the game’s own documentation if you need to use them in a particular title.

Logitech’s G935 documentation illustrates why model and connection route matter. The manufacturer lists support across multiple consoles and describes 3.5 mm audio through a controller (or directly into Nintendo Switch). It also lists wireless connectivity through the USB wireless adapter for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, while stating that the headset will not operate via the USB Wireless Mix Adapter on Xbox One. These are G935-specific instructions, not a general rule for other headsets. Check the current documentation for the exact product revision before buying or setting it up.
Quick Recap
A quick compatibility checklist
- Record the console family, generation, and model or revision.
- Record the accessory’s full model name or number and revision.
- Find the accessory maker’s official support page or manual and check for that exact console.
- Confirm the required connection method, adapter, cable, controller jack, and console port.
- Check each desired feature and, where relevant, whether the game supports it.
- If documentation omits your revision or appears inconsistent, contact the accessory maker with both model numbers rather than guessing from the connector.
