Check the exact game listing for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge before you pay. Xbox says participating games are marked on Xbox.com, in the Xbox Store, and in the Windows Store; it also directs buyers to the participating-games list at xboxplayanywhere.com. Confirm the edition and make sure you are buying a digital copy: Play Anywhere does not apply to physical discs.
Where to look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge
- Open the listing for the game you intend to buy. Check it on Xbox.com, in the Xbox Store, or in the Windows Store (also called the Microsoft Store in some contexts).
- Find the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. Xbox says participating games are marked with this badge on its website and in those stores. You can also consult Xbox’s participating-games list.
- Match the badge to the exact edition. Check the listing for the edition you are purchasing. A badge on another edition or a different game in the same series does not confirm that this listing qualifies.
- Check the purchase format. The purchase must be digital. If you are buying a retailer code, verify that the specific code is for the right game edition and entitlement; Xbox’s general guidance that participating retailers may sell digital codes does not confirm any particular seller’s current listing.
Xbox’s official FAQ puts it plainly: “Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games.” A physical disc is not a qualifying Play Anywhere purchase.

What a Play Anywhere purchase lets you do
For an eligible digital game bought through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, one purchase lets you play on an Xbox console, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, and a supported gaming handheld without a separate Play Anywhere charge. Xbox’s handheld guidance specifies Windows 11 gaming handhelds. Sign in with the same Xbox/Microsoft account; the game should appear in your console library as Ready to Install and in your PC library.

What carries over between devices
- Progress and saves: Xbox says these carry over across supported devices.
- Add-ons: Game add-ons carry over. DLC you buy or earn for an eligible game you own also works across supported devices.
- Achievements: Achievements and Gamerscore are shared, not issued as separate sets for each device.
- Playing at the same time: You cannot be signed into the same game on a console and a PC or handheld simultaneously.
Quick checks before you pay
- The badge appears on the current listing for the exact game and edition you are buying.
- You are purchasing a digital game or a verified digital code, not a disc.
- Your intended device is an Xbox console, Windows 10/11 PC, or supported Windows 11 handheld.
- If purchasing a code, its edition and entitlement match the eligible store listing.
Store labels and terminology can vary by region. Xbox’s English FAQ describes the feature and badge; for a specific purchase, rely on the live listing for your region and edition.
