Deleted means the broker matched your submitted details and removed non-exempt personal information. Pending means the broker has not reported a result yet; it is not proof that the request failed.
Start at the California Privacy Protection Agency’s How DROP works page, use the Check DROP status service, and keep checking until every broker has reported or the consumer-facing 90-day reporting period has elapsed.

What a DROP status result can—and cannot—prove
DROP is California’s centralized process for sending a deletion and opt-out request to participating data brokers. It is available to California residents and concerns information held by data brokers, not every copy of your information held by every company.

It does not establish that a retailer, bank, health provider, employer, app, website, public-record custodian, or another first-party business has erased its own records. Publicly available information and information covered by a legal exemption may also remain outside the request’s deletion scope.

CalPrivacy said on July 10, 2026, that more than 600 data brokers were active in DROP and that more than 325,000 consumers had signed up and submitted requests. The scale of the program makes the broker-by-broker status list important: one broker may report deletion while another cannot match your details or is still processing.
CalPrivacy summarizes the limitation this way: “You can track your deletion status using your DROP ID; results may vary depending on what information you provided and what brokers have in their records.” Read the agency’s explanation at DROP Data Broker Deletions, How Do They Work?.
Before you check: find and protect your DROP ID
The confirmation page shown after submission includes an eight-digit DROP ID. The ID is the key needed to retrieve your status, so save it in a password manager or another private location. Treat it as sensitive account information; do not post it publicly or send it to an unverified person offering to “check” your request.

How to check your request, step by step
- Open the official DROP instructions. Go to privacy.ca.gov/drop/how-drop-works/ and select the Check DROP status service. Use the state site rather than a third-party status page.
- Enter the eight-digit DROP ID. Type the ID exactly as issued. Check for transposed digits before submitting.
- Review the complete broker list. Do not stop at a general confirmation message. Open or read each broker entry and note its individual status.
- Record the date and result. A private note or screenshot can help you see whether a broker changes from Pending to a completed result. Keep screenshots free of unnecessary personal information before sharing them with anyone.
- Interpret the status precisely. Use the definitions below. In particular, do not treat Opted-out as Deleted, or Record not found as proof that a broker has no information about you.
- Allow the processing window. Consumer guidance says brokers have up to 90 days to report how they processed a DROP request. A Pending entry during that period can be normal.
- Improve matching when appropriate. If an entry says Record not found, return to the request profile and consider adding identifiers you are comfortable submitting, then check the status again.
- Continue monitoring. After initial processing, brokers must re-check for newly matching data and delete it at least every 45 days, according to CalPrivacy’s consumer guidance.
DROP status meanings

Why a broker may show “Record not found”
DROP can only match what you supplied against what a broker has in its records. A name, birth date, and ZIP code may be enough for some matches but not for all. Differences in spelling, an old address, a former surname, a secondary email address, or a phone number formatted differently can prevent an exact match.
CalPrivacy says additional identity fields are optional. A California resident can submit a request with a name, date of birth, and ZIP code, then return to add information. Depending on what you are comfortable disclosing, relevant fields may include:
- an alternate or former name;
- another email address;
- a current or previous phone number;
- a mobile advertising ID;
- a connected-TV ID; or
- a vehicle identification number (VIN).
Add only accurate information that you understand the state is asking you to use for matching. More data can improve the chance of finding a record, but it also gives the platform another identifier associated with you. Do not guess at an identifier or add someone else’s information.
A practical retry sequence
- Compare the information in your DROP profile with the names, emails, phone numbers, and addresses you have actually used.
- Correct obvious errors and add a relevant alternate identifier if you are comfortable doing so.
- Submit the profile update through the official DROP interface.
- Return to the status checker with the same DROP ID.
- Check whether the broker’s result changes from Record not found after the broker has had time to process the updated match.
If the result remains Record not found, that still does not prove either outcome. It means DROP has not produced a match for the information currently associated with that request.

How long to wait for a result
CalPrivacy’s current consumer instructions say brokers have up to 90 days to report how they processed a DROP request. The clock is a reporting expectation for the broker, not a promise that every dashboard entry will change on the same day.

The 90-day consumer-facing reporting window and the recurring 45-day re-check are different concepts. The first concerns reporting the initial handling of your request; the second concerns continuing checks after initial processing. Neither means that every broker’s status will update simultaneously.
What to do with each completed outcome
If the result is Deleted
Save the date and broker name. This is the clearest positive deletion outcome available in the dashboard: the broker matched your request and deleted the non-exempt personal information covered by that match. Continue checking because the ongoing process is intended to catch newly matching information later.

If the result is Exempted
Expect some information to remain. An exemption is a processed result, but it authorizes retention of the matched information under applicable law. Do not describe this broker as having deleted your record. If you need to understand a particular exemption, use the explanation supplied in the DROP result or consult a qualified privacy professional.

If the result is Opted-out
Treat this as a restriction on sale or sharing rather than erasure. The broker may continue to hold the data for purposes allowed by the applicable rules. If your goal was complete deletion, an Opted-out result has not reached that goal.
If the result is Pending
Note when you submitted the request and wait within the 90-day reporting period. Recheck periodically rather than repeatedly submitting new requests. If the entry remains Pending after the stated period, use the official DROP support route and provide your DROP ID, broker name, and the dates you checked.

A broker result is narrower than a universal “erase me” confirmation. DROP addresses information held by participating data brokers and the legal categories that the platform can process. The following may fall outside its deletion result:

- First-party information: data you gave directly to a company during an account, purchase, subscription, support, employment, or other interaction may remain with that company.
- Publicly available information: records that are publicly available may not be removed through the DROP request.
- Legally exempt information: a broker may retain matched information where an exemption applies.
- Unmatched information: if the broker cannot match your supplied identifiers, the status may be Record not found even if another variation of your information exists in its systems.
Consequently, a Deleted result for one broker does not establish that every copy held by every organization has been erased. It confirms the narrower action reported for that broker and that matched, non-exempt information.
Privacy and security while checking
- Use the official California site and a device or browser you trust.
- Keep the DROP ID private; it is a tracking credential for your request.
- Do not paste your full identity details into an unofficial “status checker.”
- When saving screenshots, crop unrelated addresses, email addresses, or identification numbers.
- Do not publish your status page or DROP ID on social media or public forums.
- If someone contacts you claiming to accelerate deletion in exchange for payment or additional credentials, verify the request through CalPrivacy’s official contact information before responding.
When to seek help
Use the official support channel when you cannot retrieve a lost DROP ID, the checker rejects a valid-looking ID, a status appears inconsistent with the broker’s explanation, or a broker remains Pending beyond the consumer-facing reporting window. Include the minimum information needed to locate the request and avoid emailing unnecessary identity documents.
For a Record not found result, first review and update your own identifiers. For an Exempted result, support may be able to explain the platform’s status terminology, but an explanation will not necessarily remove information covered by a legal exemption. For information held directly by a business rather than a data broker, you may need to use that business’s own privacy-request process; DROP is not a universal replacement for those forms.

- your eight-digit DROP ID, stored privately;
- the date each status was checked;
- the broker name;
- the exact status shown;
- any identifier update you made; and
- the date 90 days after submission, for deciding when a still-pending result needs follow-up.
Keep one row per broker. This prevents a Deleted result from one company being mistaken for the outcome of the entire request and gives support staff a clear chronology if you need assistance.
The bottom line on a successful request
You can say a data broker removal request worked only as far as the status supports. Deleted confirms that the broker matched your submission and removed non-exempt information. Opted-out confirms a sale-or-sharing restriction, not erasure. Exempted confirms a match with permitted retention. Record not found indicates no match was located, not that no data exists. Pending means the broker has not reported yet.
Check the official DROP status service with your private eight-digit ID, allow up to 90 days for initial reporting, improve identifiers only when appropriate, and return at least every 45 days after initial processing for the program’s continuing re-checks.
