There is no battery-capacity number or screen-on-time score that guarantees a compact phone will last through your day. To make a useful judgment, compare a test with your likely workload, inspect the phone’s battery-use report and battery condition, then decide whether the remaining charge at your usual bedtime would be enough.
What “all day” needs to mean for you
“All day” is not a standardized battery test. A phone that lasts from morning to bedtime for someone who mostly sends messages over Wi-Fi may not do so for someone who relies on navigation, takes photos, watches video, plays games, or spends the day in places with weak cellular reception. Even the same person may have very different days: a commute with maps and music, a long stretch of video calls, or an afternoon taking photos can put a different load on the phone than a quiet day at home.

Before judging a phone, write down three things: when you unplug it, when you need it to be usable until, and how much charge you want left at that point. Then describe a representative day: the apps and tasks you use, whether you are mostly on Wi-Fi or cellular, and whether you often have poor signal. This turns a vague promise into a personal pass/fail test.

For example, if your normal day ends at 9 p.m. and you need the phone to retain enough charge for an evening trip or emergency call, reaching 9 p.m. at 1% is not a pass—even if the phone technically stayed on all day. The acceptable reserve is your decision; there is no universal percentage that defines success. You may want a larger margin if you regularly finish work away from a charger, or accept a smaller margin if you can recharge reliably during the day.

Be specific about what “usable” means, too. It might mean getting through work and the commute without charging, or keeping enough reserve for calls after an evening event. It does not have to mean keeping the screen on continuously. A screen-on-time figure can help describe one part of usage, but it does not include every factor that affects standby and background drain, nor does it tell you whether the phone will meet your own end-of-day reserve.
Why battery capacity alone cannot answer the question
Capacity is one specification, not a runtime guarantee. Endurance also depends on what the phone is doing, display settings, software, cellular conditions, battery age and condition, and activity that continues in the background. Apple’s iPhone battery guidance identifies background activity and low cellular coverage among factors that can affect battery use, and notes that battery life and charge cycles vary with use and settings.
That is why two phones with similar capacity figures—or the same phone on two different days—can deliver different results. A capacity figure does not tell you how much power a particular workload will use, how the test was run, or what condition a used phone’s battery is in. Treat capacity as context, not as a shortcut to an all-day verdict.

It can describe the battery as designed, but it cannot tell you whether a phone will spend the day on Wi-Fi or searching for a cellular connection, whether a high-use app will remain active in the background, or how much the battery has worn. A headline capacity number also does not establish what a particular reader will get from a full charge under different settings and tasks.
For a used phone, separate the model’s original design from the condition of the unit for sale. A healthy battery in a new phone and a worn battery in an older example of the same model are not equivalent starting points. Check whatever battery-health information the device exposes, and do not assume a review result for a new review unit describes the used phone you are considering.
Compare battery tests only when you understand the workload
A continuous video test, a web-browsing test, a synthetic benchmark, and a person’s mixed-use day are different measurements. Their runtimes are not interchangeable. A result is most useful when you know what was tested and under what conditions.
When comparing reviews, keep the test name and task next to every duration. A number of hours without that context is easy to misread as a general battery-life rating. Instead, ask whether the test resembles your own day and whether the competing phones were tested in a comparable way. Where a source reports multiple workload results, use the one closest to your expected use, while remembering that even a close match will not reproduce your exact settings, coverage, and battery condition.

Look for the test conditions beside the runtime
Check whether the source identifies brightness, connection type, battery health, firmware, and workload. PhoneArena says its battery-test results use fixed brightness of 200 nits, Wi-Fi only, 100% battery health, and the latest firmware available when each device was tested. Those conditions make results more useful for controlled comparisons; they do not predict exactly how many hours you will get with your own settings, signal, apps, and battery condition.

Each condition matters to interpretation. A fixed brightness makes screen settings more consistent between tested phones, while Wi-Fi-only testing is not the same as spending a day on cellular service. A test using a battery at 100% health is also not a direct prediction for an older phone with reduced battery health. Firmware can change, so note the version context when the reviewer provides it rather than treating a result as timeless.
Also note when a page or device result was published. Test methods, firmware, and the devices included in a results page can change. A result without a clear device, workload, or testing context should carry less weight than one that discloses them. PhoneArena describes its results using the latest firmware available at the time each device was tested; that still means a current page may include results gathered under different test-time software conditions.
Do not try to convert a controlled test directly into a personal estimate by adding or subtracting an arbitrary number of hours. The test is a comparison under stated conditions, not a universal promise. Its best use is to help distinguish results from devices tested on a similar basis, then narrow the question with evidence about your own usage.
Do not treat a benchmark as a normal day
In its review of the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite 5G, Tech Advisor reported 13 hours and 49 minutes in PCMark Work 3.0. The review also described a light-use day with 2 hours and 30 minutes of screen-on time and 74% battery remaining. The benchmark and the light-use observation answer different questions: neither is a promise that another phone, or even another user of that model, will get the same result.
The example shows why the label on a result matters. PCMark Work 3.0 is a named benchmark, while the reviewer’s light-use observation describes a particular day and its reported screen-on time and remaining charge. Those figures should not be blended into a single everyday runtime, and neither establishes how the phone would fare during a day of heavier navigation, camera use, gaming, or weak signal.
Keep the workload attached to every number you compare. If one phone has a video-playback result and another has a mixed-use observation, the figures do not establish which will last longer in your own day. Prefer results from comparable workloads, and use a benchmark as one clue rather than a substitute for a representative real-world pattern.
Likewise, screen-on time is not a standalone verdict. Two people can report the same number of hours with the screen active while doing different tasks and using different connection types. A review that pairs screen-on time with the activities and remaining charge gives more context than a duration alone, but it remains evidence about that reported day—not a guarantee for yours.

LTT Labs’ meta-analysis table reports device discharge durations and nominal capacities, with the number of tests varying by model. That can provide another comparative input, but a model with only one reported test has less repeatability evidence than one with multiple runs. A discharge duration remains a result under the test conditions, not an all-day guarantee for an individual user.

When the test count is available, treat it as a confidence clue rather than a score. Several runs offer more evidence that a result can be repeated under that test setup than a single run does. They still do not guarantee a particular result in your day, and a table of nominal capacity alongside discharge duration does not remove the importance of workload and test conditions. Use it as one input alongside other comparable evidence.
Check the exact phone’s battery condition and usage
A new phone with a healthy battery and a used unit with reduced battery capacity are not equivalent. If you are assessing a phone you already own—or buying one second-hand—look at its battery-health information where the operating system provides it, and consider the usage report over several representative days.
Try to review days that resemble the day you want the phone to handle. One unusually quiet day, one day spent mostly on Wi-Fi, or one day with an app behaving unusually may not be representative. Look for recurring patterns: whether a particular app accounts for a lot of activity, whether background use is prominent, or whether the phone reports use associated with low coverage. This can help you determine whether the concern is a persistent battery condition, a specific workload, or a demanding environment.
If drain has suddenly become worse, look for a change in the usage report before concluding that the phone’s compact size is responsible. A high-use app, frequent notifications, or poor cellular reception can help explain why a particular day was demanding. The report can point to a pattern, although it does not prove that any one factor is the sole cause or quantify how much runtime a different setting would add.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery to review daily battery usage, app and system activity, and available battery-health information.
- Look for screen-on time and background time, and check whether particular apps, notifications, or low-coverage use coincide with unusually high drain.
- Open the battery-health screen. On iPhone 14 and earlier, Apple labels it Battery Health & Charging; on iPhone 15 and later, it is Battery Health.
- On iPhone 15 and later, the battery-health information can include cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date as well as battery health. Available fields depend on model generation.
Apple’s menus distinguish between model generations, so do not look for the same exact label on every iPhone. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use the Battery Health & Charging screen; on iPhone 15 and later, the screen is called Battery Health. Apple says the newer generation can also show cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Those extra fields are not evidence that every iPhone exposes the same information.
The usage report helps diagnose a pattern; it does not by itself prove that the phone’s original capacity is inadequate. If a particular app or poor cellular coverage accounts for much of the drain, the cause may be the workload or conditions rather than compact dimensions. Use battery-health information and usage activity together: one gives context about the battery’s condition, while the other helps show how the phone has been used.
On Android
The documented menu path and battery-health fields in the guidance above are specific to iPhone; they do not establish a universal Android path. Android menus and available battery information vary by manufacturer, model, and software version. Use the phone’s own battery or battery-health settings and the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model. Do not assume that a menu label, cycle-count field, or health percentage is available on every Android phone.
If you are evaluating an Android phone, identify the exact model and software version before following instructions. A path or battery-health field that exists on one manufacturer’s phone may not be present on another. When the phone does not show the information you want, avoid treating the absence of a particular field as a measured battery-health result. Use the available usage report, ask the seller or manufacturer what the model exposes, and compare independent test results that identify the exact device.

A practical check before choosing or keeping a compact phone
- Identify the exact device and its condition. Confirm the model and software version. If it is used, check whatever battery-health information that model exposes; original design and present-day battery condition are separate considerations.
- Find a test with a disclosed workload and setup. Favor a result that states what the phone did and gives relevant conditions such as brightness, Wi-Fi or cellular use, firmware, and battery health. Keep the source’s qualifications beside the result.
- Match the test to your expected day. A day involving messages, maps, camera use, video, or gaming is not equivalent to continuous video playback or Wi-Fi browsing. Weak reception can also change the outcome. Compare like with like where possible.
- Review several representative days on your own phone, if available. Check screen-on time, app use, background activity, and coverage-related drain. A single unusual day may not reflect your normal pattern.
- Set your personal pass/fail threshold. Decide the start and end times and minimum remaining charge that would make the phone useful to you. Apply that same threshold to each candidate rather than relying on the phrase “all-day battery.”
- Account for the trade-off you actually care about. If two phones both meet your endurance requirement, compare their size and weight against the extra battery margin you value. Compactness is a physical preference; it does not establish runtime.
If you are choosing between phones and cannot test them yourself, write down your expected day before reading the comparison numbers. For example, note whether you expect mostly Wi-Fi browsing or cellular use, whether navigation and camera use are regular tasks, and how late the phone must remain useful. Then filter for comparable tests and real-use observations, rather than letting the largest-looking hour figure decide the question.
If you already own the phone, your own report is often the most relevant place to begin because it reflects your apps and conditions. Review several days that resemble your routine, not only the day with the best or worst result. If the phone consistently finishes below the reserve you set, decide whether the cause looks like battery condition, recurring app activity, or the demands of your normal day before changing your expectations or carrying a backup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two compact phones fairly
| What to compare | What to look for | How it affects your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Comparable browsing, video, or mixed-use tests, with the task identified | Different tasks produce different runtimes; do not rank unlike tests as if they measured the same day. |
| Test setup | Brightness, Wi-Fi or cellular connection, signal conditions, firmware, and battery health, when disclosed | These conditions help explain why a published result may differ from your own use. |
| Real-use observation | Screen-on time, the activities performed, and remaining charge reported for that day | A light-use day is evidence about that use pattern, not a prediction for heavier use. |
| Battery condition | Available health and cycle information for the specific device, especially if used | A worn unit may not represent the endurance of a new phone of the same model. |
| Repeatability | How many test runs support the result, if the source reports the count | Multiple runs provide more repeatability evidence than a single result, without turning a lab test into a personal guarantee. |
| Size and weight | The physical trade-off between candidate phones | If both meet your defined endurance threshold, choose based on the compactness and endurance margin you prefer. |
Use the table to keep the comparisons separate. A device that scores well in one disclosed workload has evidence in its favor for that task, but the result should not automatically outweigh a more relevant test of another workload. Similarly, a reviewer’s light-use day may be useful if your days are light, but it should not decide the comparison if you routinely use maps, camera, games, or video away from Wi-Fi.

When a power bank is a sensible fallback
A compact power bank can be useful for unusually long days or a phone whose battery no longer meets your needs, but carrying one is a separate trade-off. Check its physical size, connector, and charging support against the phone before buying. A stated power-bank capacity is not the same thing as a guaranteed amount of usable charge delivered to a particular handset.
As one manufacturer-listed example, Anker’s 313 Power Bank (PowerCore 10K) is specified at 10,000mAh, has USB-C output, and measures about 5.89 × 2.70 × 0.57 inches. Those are the manufacturer’s stated specifications; they do not establish the real charging yield for a particular phone or make the accessory a universal fit. Verify current specifications and compatibility for the phone and charger you intend to use.
Before choosing a backup, check that the connector and charging support match your phone, and consider whether its size is acceptable to carry. The Anker example illustrates a stated capacity, USB-C output, and physical dimensions; it does not guarantee a full extra charge or a particular amount of extra runtime. A power bank is an optional contingency for days that exceed your usual needs, not proof that the phone itself meets your all-day threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

No specific service program or availability is established here, so check the maker’s current guidance rather than assuming that every phone has the same repair options. For a new purchase, factor battery condition into the decision separately from the phone’s original battery design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a battery capacity that guarantees a compact phone will last all day?
No. Capacity is one specification, but workload, display settings, software, cellular signal, background activity, and battery condition also affect endurance. Compare tests with disclosed conditions and decide what end-of-day reserve you need.
How many hours of screen-on time count as all day?
There is no universal screen-on-time threshold. The tasks performed during those hours, standby and background activity, connection type, and your required bedtime reserve all matter. Define the hours and remaining charge that would make the phone useful for your own routine.
Can I compare a benchmark result with a video-playback test?
Not as if they measured the same workload. A benchmark, video playback, browsing, and mixed-use day are different measurements. Compare results from similar tasks where possible, and keep each test’s conditions attached to its runtime.
What battery information can I check on an iPhone?
Open Settings > Battery to review daily usage, app and system activity, and available battery-health information. On iPhone 14 and earlier, the health screen is called Battery Health & Charging; on iPhone 15 and later it is called Battery Health. Apple says iPhone 15 and later can also show cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date.
Is there one Android battery-health menu path for every phone?
No universal Android path or set of battery-health fields is established. Menu names and available information vary by manufacturer, model, and software version. Check the exact phone’s battery settings and the manufacturer’s guidance.
What does the Tech Advisor OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite 5G result mean for my phone?
Tech Advisor reported 13 hours and 49 minutes in PCMark Work 3.0 and separately described a light-use day with 2 hours and 30 minutes of screen-on time and 74% battery remaining. These are results for that device and those specific contexts, not a prediction for another phone or a different workload.
Should I buy a power bank if a compact phone may not last all day?
It can be a fallback for unusually long days, but it adds another item to carry and does not prove the phone itself meets your needs. Check the power bank’s connector, charging support, dimensions, and compatibility. A stated capacity does not guarantee a specific charging yield for your handset.

The Bottom Line
To judge whether a compact phone will last all day, define your own start time, end time, workload, and acceptable reserve. Compare test results only when their workloads and conditions are clear, then check the exact phone’s battery condition and real usage report. Capacity and one headline test cannot guarantee your result; a power bank is an optional backup, not a substitute for assessing the phone.
