To check whether a document is official, identify the country, issuing authority and document type, then confirm it through that authority’s official channel or the relevant court’s records. A preliminary notice is not necessarily a final revocation.
Start with the country, issuer and document type
Read the document for the country, agency or court name, case number, date, document title and any authentication code. These details determine where to verify it: procedures differ by jurisdiction, and a search tool for one country cannot establish whether a document from another is genuine.

If the document arrived in an unexpected email or message, do not rely on its links or phone numbers. Find the court or agency’s official website independently and use contact details published there.

Check whether it is a notice or a final order
A request for information, notice of intent or process letter may be one stage in a proceeding rather than a decision that revokes citizenship. Canada, for example, describes a process that can include a request-for-information letter followed by a notification letter. The Federal Court is the decision maker unless the person requests ministerial determination; the Citizenship Act requires written notice before revocation, including the grounds and reasons. See IRCC’s citizenship revocation process.

Read the document’s wording and check the status with the named authority. Do not treat a letter about a possible or ongoing proceeding as proof that revocation is final.
For a U.S. federal naturalization case, check the court record
U.S. federal naturalization revocation is addressed in 8 U.S.C. § 1451. The statute provides for court proceedings and says that, when an order revoking naturalization is entered, the court sends a certified copy to the Attorney General. USCIS guidance likewise describes the court entering the revocation order and cancelling the certificate, with USCIS updating its records after receiving the order. This applies to U.S. naturalization; it should not be assumed to describe every citizenship status or another country’s process. See USCIS guidance on revocation of naturalization.

- Locate the federal case. If you know the district, use that federal court’s search. If you do not know the court, search the nationwide federal-court index through PACER’s Find a Case service.
- Open the docket and the order. Compare the case number and caption, parties, court, filing or entry date, and the wording and signature or authentication on the document itself. A search-result summary alone does not establish that the paper you have is the complete, current order.
- Contact the court if anything is missing or unclear. PACER advises users to contact the federal court if they cannot locate a case or need information beyond the summary, docket entries and document copies available through the service.
PACER’s nationwide locator updates daily, while court-specific records are available as filings are entered. Some documents, including some immigration records, may not be publicly available. A missing online result is therefore not, by itself, proof that a document is forged.
Use a validation code only through the issuer’s stated process
Some authorities provide a document-specific authenticity check. Brazil’s Ministry of Justice describes an online check for certain nationality-loss certificates sent by email: the user enters the verifier number and CRC code shown on the certificate. Use that method only for the certificate type covered by the ministry’s instructions: Brazilian Ministry of Justice certificate validation.
A QR code, seal or code on a different document does not prove authenticity unless the issuing authority explains how to validate that document.

- Verify the issuer and jurisdiction using an official website located independently.
- Ask the court clerk or agency through its published contact channel whether it issued the document and whether the case or order is final.
- Provide the case number, document date and title, but avoid sending sensitive personal information through an unverified link or address.
- Keep the document and any related notices. If it states a deadline or an order appears to be in force, consider getting advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
Online access is not a universal authenticity test. The appropriate confirmation may be a public docket, a document-specific agency service, or direct confirmation from the court or agency that issued or maintains the record.
