Check the web version in Chrome first, confirm Linux is available if you need a Linux app, and treat Android support as a separate option. For each route, verify the required features, offline access, account permissions, and any camera, USB, or graphics needs.
Start with the app’s requirements
For each app, note what you actually need to do with it. “The app opens” is not enough if your work depends on a particular feature or device.

- Is its web version acceptable, or do you need a Linux or Android version?
- Which specific features and account access are essential? Does it require an extension?
- Must it work without an internet connection?
- Does the workflow use a camera, a USB device, graphics acceleration, or an emulator?
- Is the Chromebook managed by a school or employer, and will you use the same account and device in practice?
These requirements help distinguish an app that launches from one that can complete your work.

Test the web app in Chrome
- Open the app’s official website in Chrome on the Chromebook.
- Sign in with the account you intend to use, then run through the required workflow and features.
- If Chrome offers an install option, install the site as a web app and open it from the Launcher. Installation can make it easier to launch, but does not prove that every feature works or that the app works offline.
- If offline use matters, disconnect from the internet and test the tasks you need. Google cautions that some web apps may not work completely without a connection. Some offline features require setup while online; for example, Gmail offline must be enabled before you lose connectivity. See Google’s web app guidance and Chromebook offline guidance.
Test with the intended account because sign-in, permissions, and available features can depend on it. A web app is different from a legacy Chrome Web Store “Chrome App”: Google says Chrome Apps are supported only on Chromebooks and stopped working on Windows, Mac, and Linux after December 2022. Do not mistake them for modern web apps or Chrome extensions. Google’s web app documentation explains the current web app capabilities and limitations.

Check Linux availability—and the features Linux may lack
Linux development environment support is separate from web app and Android app support. To check whether it can be enabled, use this path:
- Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers.
- Under Linux development environment, select Set up, if the option is available.
- Follow the setup prompts. Google says setup creates a Debian environment and may take 10 minutes or more; that is an estimate, not a performance guarantee.
If Linux setup is unavailable on a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may have blocked it. Ask the administrator whether the policy can be changed. For the official setup path and requirements, see Google’s Linux development environment help.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Being able to start Linux does not mean every Linux application or workflow will work. Google documents limitations that can rule out specific needs:
- Camera access: a Linux app that needs the Chromebook camera may not be suitable.
- USB devices: most non-Android USB devices are not supported in the Linux environment.
- Emulators: Android emulators are not supported.
- Hardware acceleration: GPU acceleration and video decode are among the unsupported features.
Check the app’s requirements against these limits, then install the app and exercise the exact workflow if setup and installation are permitted. Google’s Linux documentation describes these limitations.

Check Android apps separately
An Android version is another possible route, not evidence that the web or Linux version will work. To check whether the Chromebook supports Google Play:
- Open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences.
- If the option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps.
- If Play Store access is available, check whether the specific app is offered and test the needed features on the Chromebook.
Availability does not guarantee that a particular Android app meets your needs. Google’s guidance says app compatibility can depend on considerations including memory, storage, connectivity, input, and display. A school or employer may also restrict Play Store access. See Google’s Chromebook Android app guidance and its Android app deployment guidance.

Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education Help says, “All Chromebooks launched after 2019 support Android apps.” Treat that as broad platform guidance—not proof that every Android app works, or that a managed Chromebook’s administrator allows Play Store use. In education deployments, Google recommends trying the web app first when an app has both web and Android options, then testing selected Android apps on a small number of managed Chromebooks before wider rollout. Those are deployment recommendations, not a guarantee for an individual device.
Choose among web, Linux, and Android versions
If the app exists in more than one form, compare the options against the requirements you wrote down. Use the table as a decision aid, then confirm the chosen version by testing it on the Chromebook.

| Option | What to verify | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Web app in Chrome | Required features, intended account, and offline behavior | Installing it does not guarantee complete offline operation. |
| Linux app | Linux setup availability, app requirements, and the exact workflow | Camera, most non-Android USB devices, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration have documented limitations. |
| Android app | Play Store availability, app requirements, and behavior on the device | App requirements and administrator restrictions can affect whether it is usable. |
For managed Chromebooks, run the check with the account and device conditions you will actually use. A feature that works on an unmanaged device may be unavailable under school or employer policy. Ask the administrator about blocked Linux setup, Play Store access, or other restrictions; Google’s deployment guidance recommends testing selected apps on managed devices before wider use.
Decide based on the workflow, not the app listing
Count the Chromebook as a fit only after the required tasks work in the version you plan to use, under the intended account and connectivity conditions. If a necessary workflow fails because of a documented platform limitation or device policy, consider another supported version or a different device. Verify the specific requirement before replacing hardware; compatibility depends on the app, Chromebook, and any administrator controls.
