Before installing a Chrome extension, compare what it says it does with the permissions and website access it requests, then check whether its privacy disclosures are clear and consistent with its policy. The Chrome Web Store listing, ratings, badges, and Google’s review process can help you assess risk, but none is a guarantee that an extension is harmless.
Start with the Chrome Web Store listing
Read the extension’s store listing rather than relying on a promotional page urging you to install it. Check whether the name, developer, description, and stated purpose make sense together. Look for specific information about what the extension does, who maintains it, and how it handles data. Google’s June 2024 guidance on staying safe with Chrome extensions recommends comparing an extension’s stated goals with its permissions and published privacy practices.

Ratings and reviews can reveal problems or patterns worth investigating, but they are signals, not proof. Read recent reviews as well as the overall score: user experiences and extension behavior can change, and Google notes that reviews may change over time. A featured or verified badge is also useful context, not a personal safety certification.

Translate each permission into practical access
When Chrome displays a permission warning, pause and consider what the requested access could allow. For example, access to data on all websites may let an extension read, request, or modify data on every page you visit. Access limited to a specified list of websites is narrower. Google explains these distinctions in its guide to permissions requested by apps and extensions.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Other warnings may concern browsing history, tabs and browsing activity, bookmarks, location, or copied data. A warning describes potential access; it does not by itself establish that an extension is misusing that access. Ask whether the access is necessary for the feature you want and whether the developer clearly explains why.
- A page-translation extension may need access to pages you ask it to translate.
- An extension that changes how websites display may need permission to interact with those pages.
- If a simple function appears to require access to unrelated data or every website, look for an explanation before proceeding.
Some extensions can request optional permissions when you use a feature, rather than requiring them all at installation. Chrome’s developer guidance explains how permissions govern access to extension APIs and encourages developers to request only what they need. Broad access can have a legitimate use, but the relationship between the access and the extension’s job should be understandable. See Chrome’s documentation on declaring permissions and warning users and its guidance on protecting user privacy.

Check website access and narrow it where possible
Website access is especially important because it can determine which pages an extension may interact with. If it only needs to work on a particular site, access to all websites may be broader than necessary. Compare the requested scope with the extension’s stated function, and check whether Chrome lets you limit access to specific sites or grant access only when you choose to use the extension.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume that broad access proves malicious intent. Instead, treat it as a reason to ask whether the feature requires that scope and whether the developer explains the need. If the explanation is missing or does not fit the function, choose a narrower alternative or do not install it.

Compare the privacy disclosure with the policy
Review the privacy information on the Web Store listing and open the linked privacy policy. Compare both with the extension’s stated purpose: what data does it say it collects, uses, or shares, and does that match the access it requests? Vague language, missing details, or contradictions between the listing and policy are reasons to be cautious.
Chrome’s developer guidance says privacy disclosures should be accurate, up to date, and consistent with the privacy policy. The Chrome Web Store Program Policies also require accurate privacy information and address contradictions with an extension’s policy or behavior. These rules set expectations for developers; the existence of a policy or disclosure does not independently verify how a particular extension handles data.

Use Google’s review process as one safety layer
Google says the Chrome team reviews extensions before publication and monitors published extensions, including their behavior over time. Extensions assessed as severe risks may be removed and disabled. That process is useful, but it does not replace checking the specific extension’s purpose, requested access, developer information, and privacy practices. Google’s safety guidance recommends considering those details together.

Do not use an old statistic as a measure of today’s risk. A Google Research paper studied roughly 100,000 Chrome Web Store submissions from January 2012 through 2015 and reported that nearly one in ten in that historical dataset were deemed malicious. That figure describes the paper’s past study set, not the current share of extensions available in 2026. The paper is Trends and Lessons from Three Years Fighting Malicious Extensions.

A quick decision checklist
- Confirm the listing: Is the developer identifiable, and does the description explain the feature clearly?
- Inspect the warnings: What information or browser features could the permissions expose?
- Check site scope: Does it need access to every website, or could access be limited to selected sites?
- Look for a reason: Does each permission fit the extension’s purpose, with a clear explanation?
- Compare privacy claims: Do the Web Store disclosure and linked policy align with each other and with the extension’s function?
- Weigh reviews carefully: Look at recent patterns, but do not treat ratings or badges as proof of safety.
If important questions remain unanswered, do not install the extension. A convenient feature is not worth granting access you cannot understand or justify.
Review extensions you already installed
Safety checks should continue after installation: listings, reviews, permissions, and behavior can change. Google recommends periodically reviewing extensions and their privacy practices, comparing their goals with their permissions, limiting the sites they can access, and uninstalling extensions you no longer use. Chrome Safety Check and the Extensions page can also warn about potential risks. These built-in surfaces are additional signals, not a substitute for your own assessment. See Google’s Chrome extension safety guidance.
