You can open and process an EPUB in a browser without sending the book file to a server—but only if the specific tool handles the file locally. “Runs in your browser” is not proof that a website never transmits book data or contacts third-party services. Check the tool’s data flow, security controls, feature support, and storage behavior before using it with a private or unfamiliar book.
What it means to process an EPUB in a browser
EPUB is a single-file format for distributing structured publications and their resources. The W3C published EPUB 3.3 as a Recommendation on 13 January 2026. An EPUB can contain HTML, CSS, SVG, JavaScript, and other resources, so it is more than a plain text document.

A browser application can read and render that package using JavaScript. For example, the Epub.js project describes itself as a library for rendering EPUBs in browsers. That demonstrates that browser-side processing is technically possible; it does not establish how any particular website handles a book you select.

But a website can still make network requests for analytics, remote fonts, scripts, APIs, synchronization, or conversion. The phrase “no uploads” is meaningful only when it describes the actual implementation and its behavior.

How to assess a “no uploads” claim
Before opening a sensitive or unfamiliar book, check the tool’s privacy policy and, if you can, inspect its network activity in your browser’s developer tools. Look for the file or extracted text in outgoing requests, as well as requests to analytics, remote assets, or APIs. A local file picker alone does not prove that the content stays local.
- File and content transfer: Does the tool send the EPUB, extracted text, images, or other contents to a server?
- Other network activity: Does it contact analytics, remote fonts, scripts, or APIs while processing or displaying the book?
- Storage: Does it retain the book, metadata, or your reading position, and for how long?
- Optional features: Could sync, conversion, sharing, or account features change where data goes?
No particular consumer service is verified here, so no specific site can be certified as upload-free on this evidence alone.

Security matters even when processing is local
EPUB content uses web technologies, and some publications may include scripts. A browser-based tool should isolate rendered content, limit access to local files, and control network access. The W3C EPUB Reading Systems 3.4 guidance says reading systems must prevent access to resources referenced by file URLs. It allows network access but warns that it raises security and privacy risks.

Epub.js documents iframe sandboxing and recommends sanitizing EPUB content. Those are useful design considerations, not proof that every website using the library deploys it safely. Local processing can reduce the need to transmit a file, but it does not by itself establish that a tool is secure.

A 2020 paper, Reading Between the Lines: Security and Privacy Issues in EPUB Reading Systems, reports that its authors evaluated 92 free EPUB reading systems and five physical reading devices. Its abstract reports arbitrary-file extraction by a malicious EPUB in eight of the tested reading systems. These are historical findings about the systems in that study, not a measure of current browser tools or their prevalence.
Reading privacy includes more than the book file
The W3C EPUB 3.3 security and privacy questionnaire notes: “EPUBs should not contain any sensitive information. But the fact that you are reading a particular book can itself be sensitive information.” Reading systems may also retain state, such as your reading location, across sessions. Consider both what a tool receives and what it keeps.

Check feature support before relying on a browser tool
Browser rendering does not guarantee that every publication will work. Confirm that the specific tool supports the EPUB features and protections you need, especially if the book uses DRM, fixed-layout pages, interactive content, embedded media, or accessibility features. There is no compatibility matrix established here for a particular website or browser.
For a low-risk test, try a non-sensitive EPUB first and check whether the pages, navigation, and relevant features work as expected. For a private book, avoid tools whose file handling, network requests, or retention practices you cannot establish.
