For RPCS3, a Blu-ray drive must meet specific hardware requirements to read PS3 game discs; an ordinary Blu-ray drive is not automatically compatible. Check the drive’s exact model and revision against RPCS3’s compatible-drive list before buying. RPCS3’s Quickstart specifies a MediaTek chipset and a +6 read offset for fully reading PS3 discs.
Check the exact model and revision
Read the model number and revision from the drive’s own label and compare them with RPCS3’s compatible BD drive list. Do not rely on the brand name, the Blu-ray logo, or a listing that identifies only the external enclosure: compatibility can vary by revision.

The accessed Quickstart labels itself “Website Release Preview 2021.12.05.” Treat its model list as guidance to verify, not as a freshly confirmed inventory. Check RPCS3’s current hardware guidance for the exact model and revision before purchasing.

Check the listing and seller, not just the advertised shell
A product page can describe a case or report a firmware identity without proving which mechanism is inside. On 1 October 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that RPCS3 developers had warned about fake Blu-ray drives presented as higher-end models despite using older mechanisms and spoofed firmware. Reported warning signs included misspellings, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates and obscured PCB markings.
- Prefer a listing that identifies the actual drive model and revision, not only the enclosure or brand.
- Buy from a reputable seller with buyer protections, and compare the delivered unit’s label with the model you checked.
- Be cautious if photos or identifying details are obscured, inconsistent or visibly altered.

Make sure the drive fits your computer
After confirming model and revision, check the drive’s interface and form factor against your computer and any enclosure you plan to use. Compatibility with PS3 discs does not guarantee that the drive physically connects to your setup; the product listing should identify the connection and whether the drive is internal or external.

A listed drive makes the computer-based PS3 disc-reading and dumping route possible; it does not by itself prepare a game for RPCS3. The Quickstart says computer-based dumping also requires a matching .ird file to decrypt the disc. A typical dumped Blu-ray title directory contains PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.sfb; PS3_UPDATE is optional. Region and title ID matter when handling game data.

RPCS3 also requires official PlayStation 3 system software. Its Quickstart directs users to obtain firmware from PlayStation and install it using RPCS3’s built-in firmware installer. The guide says game titles must be self-dumped from the user’s own PS3 or computer, and advises checking local software-distribution laws.
