If it is active, YouTube reports receiving data from the encoder. Then check stream health, the broadcast’s separate status, the VPS encoder’s recent output, and the public playback. No single one of those checks proves all the others.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it tells you | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
YouTube liveStream.status.streamStatus |
Whether YouTube reports receiving encoder data; active indicates receipt. |
Whether the image is changing or every viewer can play it correctly. |
YouTube healthStatus and configurationIssues |
Whether YouTube reports stream issues and their severity. | Whether public playback is working. |
| VPS process and recent encoder output or logs | Whether the encoder appears to be running and producing output. | Whether YouTube has received or accepted the feed. |
| Public playback | Whether the broadcast can be watched and appears current from a viewer’s perspective. | The precise point of failure between the VPS and YouTube. |
YouTube models the incoming audio-video feed as a liveStream and the event or video as a liveBroadcast. Their statuses answer different questions; an active feed does not, on its own, mean the broadcast is publicly live. YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams describes the distinction.
Check YouTube’s receipt status
1. Find the broadcast and its bound stream
Use the Live Streaming API with the Google Account that owns the broadcasting channel. Identify the relevant liveBroadcast and the liveStream bound to it. A broadcast is bound to one stream. API access requires authorization from the channel-owning Google Account; see YouTube Live Streaming API Overview. If you do not have that access, ask an authorized channel operator to check, or use the current YouTube Studio live control room. Exact Studio interface steps are not established here.
2. Read status.streamStatus
Inspect the bound stream’s status.streamStatus field. Google defines active as receiving data via the stream and inactive as not receiving data. Other documented values include created, ready, and error. In particular, ready means valid CDN settings, not that video is currently arriving. The field and its documented values are in the LiveStreams API reference.

Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide says to confirm the bound stream’s status.streamStatus is active before transitioning a broadcast to testing or live. Treat active as evidence of YouTube receipt—not as proof the feed is flawless or that viewers see changing frames. See Life of a Broadcast.
3. Read health and configuration issues
Check status.healthStatus and any configurationIssues on the stream. The API’s health meanings are specific:

good: no configuration issues with severity warning or worse.ok: no configuration issues with severity error.bad: the stream has issues with severity error.noData: YouTube’s live streaming backend has no information about the stream’s health. This is inconclusive; it does not by itself show that the encoder stopped.
Where issues are listed, review their type, severity, reason, and description rather than relying only on the overall health label. Field definitions are in the LiveStreams API reference.
Check whether the broadcast itself is live
If the stream is active but viewers cannot watch the event, inspect the separate liveBroadcast.status. The broadcast may still be awaiting a manual transition, may be configured for auto-start, or may be in a transition state. YouTube says broadcast transitions typically take 5–10 seconds and can take up to a minute; poll the broadcast status while the transition completes. An active feed and a live broadcast are related but distinct conditions. The lifecycle details are in YouTube’s Life of a Broadcast guide.

Corroborate the API result from the VPS and as a viewer
Inspect the encoder on the VPS
Confirm that the encoder process you expect is present and inspect its recent output or log timestamps. Look for current activity rather than relying on a process name alone. The exact command depends on the encoder and VPS operating system, neither of which is specified here. A running process can be stalled, misconfigured, or unable to reach YouTube, so this is corroboration—not proof of receipt.
Open the public broadcast
Check the broadcast as a viewer and verify that it plays and appears current. If the API says active but the picture is frozen or stale, that discrepancy matters: API receipt confirms data arrival, not that the image content is changing or every viewer’s playback path works. The documented status fields do not establish a universal API field that proves frames are visually fresh.

Troubleshoot by the status you see

Check whether the encoder is producing current output, then investigate its destination and stream key configuration, the VPS network path, and any error YouTube reports.readybut no video: Do not treat readiness as receipt. Check whether the encoder has started sending to the stream bound to this broadcast.noDatahealth: Do not infer that the VPS is stopped from this value alone. UsestreamStatus, VPS output, and playback as separate signals.active, but broadcast not live: Check the broadcast lifecycle state, auto-start configuration, and whether a manual transition is needed; poll while a transition completes.active, but YouTube reports health issues: Review each configuration issue’s severity and description.
