How to Check Where an Image or Video First Appeared Online

Search images with Google Lens and TinEye, and search distinctive video frames. Then inspect dated pages carefully: the earliest indexed match is a clue, not proof of the first upload or creator.

Search the image with both Google Lens and TinEye, then open and compare the earliest dated pages each service finds. For a video, reverse-search several clear, distinctive frames. These steps can help locate an earlier indexed appearance, but they cannot prove an absolute first upload or identify the original creator by themselves.

How do I find the original source of an image?

  1. Start with the clearest copy. Save the image or use a clear screenshot. If you have several versions, try the one with the most visible detail and the least obstruction.
  2. Search with Google Lens. On desktop, follow Google’s image-search instructions to submit an image. Lens may return similar images and pages containing matches. If available, open Google’s “About this image” panel for additional context, including when Google first saw the image or a similar version. That panel is not available in every region. (Google Search Help)
  3. Search the same image with TinEye. Upload it or provide an image URL at TinEye. Compare its matches with Lens results rather than relying on one index.
  4. Compare the early matches. TinEye can sort results by first occurrence, largest image, or most edited version. Note promising dates and page URLs, but treat a “first found” date as an index clue, not a confirmed publication date. (TinEye’s explanation of “first found on”)
  5. Inspect the pages themselves. Check the page’s publication date, caption, byline, surrounding text, and links to a photographer, agency, original post, or other source. A search result may lead to a repost or copy, not the source.
  6. Cross-check the context. Compare the image and the page’s claims with other dated references. Google News Initiative’s photo-verification guidance includes reverse-image search and date filtering as ways to investigate a photo’s history.

How to trace a video

Most reverse-image tools search still images, so use frames from the video as image queries. Pause at several points and capture clear frames that contain distinctive people, objects, signs, landmarks, or other visual details. Avoid relying on a single generic frame or only the platform thumbnail: different frames may produce different matches.

Search each frame with Google Lens and TinEye, then inspect any matching pages for upload dates and context. Internews’ verification manual describes using a video screenshot or thumbnail for reverse-image search to locate video appearances. A match can help you find a video page; no match does not establish that the video is new or original.

What an “earliest” result can—and cannot—tell you

The oldest dated page you find is best described as the earliest located appearance in the search indexes you checked. It is not necessarily the first publication anywhere. Search services report what their indexes found; a “first seen” or “first found” date is not proof of when an image was created, captured, or first published. Google and TinEye explain these dates as index information, not definitive origin records. (Google; TinEye)

  • Check whether it is the same image. Results may show the exact visual, a crop, an edit, or only a visually similar image. Compare details before treating a match as evidence of reuse.
  • Do not treat a search miss as proof. An image may be absent from an index, private, deleted, changed, or difficult for a service to match. The services do not claim to cover every online post.
  • Separate a page date from an image date. A page’s publication date can help establish when that page appeared, but it does not by itself establish when or where the image was captured.

Can image metadata identify the original?

Metadata can offer useful leads, but it may be missing or altered and cannot independently prove who created or published a file. Google warns that “credit and digital source type metadata can be modified with image generation and editing tools, so it may not be accurate.” (Google Search Help) Corroborate metadata with dated pages, captions, credits, and independent context rather than treating it as a final answer.

Which reverse-image search tool should I use?

There is no established universal winner or comparable coverage rate in the available documentation. Judge each service by whether it finds useful matches for your particular image, whether you can inspect dated pages, what sorting or version clues it provides, and whether relevant features are available in your region.

Google Lens Searching an image and finding visually similar results or pages; “About this image” may add first-seen context. “About this image” availability varies by region, and first-seen information is an index signal, not proof of origin. (Google Search Help)
TinEye Finding image matches and sorting by first occurrence, largest image, or most edited version. Its “first found” date is based on TinEye’s index and does not establish the actual first publication date. (TinEye Help)

Does finding the source mean I can reuse the image?

No. Finding a source page or stock-image match does not grant permission to reuse the image. Check the license and any applicable terms with the rights holder or licensing source. TinEye’s guide to searching for an image also distinguishes finding an image from having reuse permission.
