How to Check UPI Transaction Status and Get a Failed Payment Reversed

A debited UPI payment is not necessarily lost. Check the app status and RRN, then use the correct RBI reversal deadline: T+1 for a missing beneficiary credit or T+5 for a missing merchant confirmation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a UPI payment failed but your bank account was debited, first open the UPI app’s transaction history and record the status, date, amount and transaction number/RRN. The refund deadline depends on what failed: a transfer where the beneficiary was not credited should auto-reverse by the next calendar day (T+1), while a merchant payment without confirmation should auto-reverse within five calendar days (T+5). Raise a complaint in the app or through NPCI, keep the complaint reference, and contact your bank immediately for any unauthorised or fraudulent debit.

Check the transaction status before assuming the money is lost

A debit entry in your bank account does not by itself prove that the recipient or merchant received the money. UPI can show a transaction as pending, failed or successful while the banks finish reconciliation. Check the payment in the same UPI app you used rather than relying only on an SMS or bank statement.

  1. Open the UPI app and go to Transaction history, Activity or the equivalent payment list.
  2. Select the disputed payment and read the displayed state: Pending, Failed or Successful.
  3. Use the app’s refresh, check-status or retry-status control if one is offered. Do not start another payment until you understand whether the first one completed.
  4. Write down the transaction date, amount, payee or merchant, debit-account details and the transaction number or RRN (retrieval reference number).

NPCI’s UPI Frequently Asked Questions says users can check UPI status and raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app. NPCI also operates a complaint facility for transactions routed through its payment systems. A bank statement that says “debit” is useful evidence, but the UPI transaction screen and RRN are the identifiers support teams use to trace the payment.

Identify which UPI failure rule applies

The Reserve Bank of India’s failed-transaction framework does not use one universal “refund within 24 hours” promise. The deadline depends on whether you were sending money to a beneficiary or paying a merchant, and on what part of the transaction failed.

What happened Required reversal deadline Compensation when the deadline is missed
Your account was debited, but the beneficiary’s account was not credited for a UPI transfer. Auto-reversal by T+1. ₹100 per day for each day beyond T+1.
Your account was debited, but a merchant did not receive transaction confirmation. Auto-reversal within T+5. ₹100 per day for each day beyond T+5.

In the RBI framework, T is the calendar date on which the transaction occurred. T+1 and T+5 therefore mean calendar-day deadlines, not business-day deadlines. The framework covers failed transactions that were not fully completed for reasons not attributable to the customer, including a missing beneficiary credit.

UPI transfer to a person or bank account: T+1

Use this category when you paid a person or transferred funds to a bank account and your account was debited but the beneficiary was not credited. The beneficiary bank must arrange auto-reversal by the next calendar day after the transaction date. If that deadline passes, ask the bank to trace the reversal and apply the prescribed delay compensation.

UPI merchant payment: T+5

Use this category when you paid a shop, website or other merchant and the merchant did not receive confirmation even though your account was debited. The applicable auto-reversal deadline is five calendar days after T. A merchant’s failure to see an order confirmation can be a confirmation problem rather than proof that the debit is permanently lost, so retain the payment record while the status is checked.

How to count T+1 and T+5 correctly

Start with the calendar date shown in the UPI transaction details, not the date on which you first contacted support. If T is 10 October, T+1 is 11 October and T+5 is 15 October. Weekends and bank holidays do not change the meaning of these labels because the RBI framework defines T as the transaction calendar date. If the payment is reversed after the applicable date, ask the bank to show the due date, the actual reversal date and how it calculated any delay compensation.

The two clocks should not be combined. A person-to-person transfer with no beneficiary credit is measured against T+1 even if the app describes it generally as a “failed UPI payment.” A merchant transaction in which confirmation did not reach the merchant is measured against T+5. Giving the bank the exact failure description helps it assign the correct category instead of applying a generic refund estimate.

What to do when the status is pending

A pending status means the payment has not reached a final state in the app. It should not automatically be treated as a failed payment or an unauthorised debit.

  • Confirm that the amount was actually debited, rather than merely showing as a temporary hold or an app notification.
  • Check whether the beneficiary or merchant can see a completed payment before attempting a second payment.
  • Save a screenshot or note the RRN, date and amount while the transaction is visible.
  • Contact the bank if the status remains pending or the other party cannot confirm receipt.

NPCI’s FAQ describes a pending debit in which the payer was debited but the beneficiary was not credited as a possible delay at the beneficiary bank. It says the amount will reach the beneficiary within 48 hours once that bank completes its daily settlements. That FAQ guidance does not replace the RBI’s transaction-type-specific T+1 and T+5 framework: if the relevant regulatory deadline expires without completion or reversal, use the complaint and escalation process.

Do not make repeated payments simply because a confirmation screen is slow. First ask the intended recipient whether a credit has arrived and compare the amount and time with your transaction record. If you must make another payment for an urgent purchase, keep both RRNs and tell the merchant which payment should be matched; a later completion of the first attempt can otherwise look like a duplicate.

What to do when the status is failed after a debit

For a failed transaction, first verify the debit in your bank account and then start a formal trace. NPCI’s FAQ says a failed debit is to be refunded and advises contacting bank customer support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. Treat that one-hour statement as NPCI FAQ guidance for contacting support, not as a replacement for the RBI deadline that applies to your transfer or merchant payment.

  1. Open the failed payment’s details and copy the transaction number/RRN.
  2. Record the exact transaction date, amount, beneficiary or merchant and the account from which the money was debited.
  3. Use the app’s Help, Raise complaint or Report an issue option for that transaction.
  4. Describe the problem precisely: “Account debited; beneficiary not credited” for a transfer, or “Account debited; merchant confirmation not received” for a merchant payment.
  5. Save the complaint reference number and any acknowledgement screen.
  6. Contact the bank’s official customer-support channel with the RRN and complaint reference, especially if the app cannot create a complaint or the refund is not visible.

If the app later changes from failed to successful, do not delete the original evidence. Record the final status and verify whether the beneficiary or merchant received one payment or whether a separate reversal also appears in the account. The RRN, status history and bank ledger together give support staff a consistent timeline.

Raise and track a complaint through NPCI

NPCI’s complaint portal supports status checks and complaint registration for transactions routed through NPCI payment systems. When you submit a complaint, NPCI makes it available to the relevant member institution. That bank or payment institution is responsible for investigating and resolving the case; the portal is not a substitute for the member’s actual reversal process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Information the complaint form needs

  • Transaction date
  • Transaction number or RRN
  • Amount and the beneficiary or merchant details
  • Your bank or participating UPI provider
  • A description of whether the transaction is pending, failed or missing confirmation

Keep the complaint reference after submission. NPCI says the bank or institution can check the case using the transaction details or that reference number. If a complaint is marked closed but the money has not been reversed, give the bank the closure reference and ask for the transaction-level explanation rather than opening multiple duplicate cases.

Use the same spelling and amount in every channel. A mismatch between the RRN in the app and a manually typed number can send a case to the wrong transaction. Save the date and time of each call or message, the ticket number and the response you received. This record is particularly useful if you later need to show that the applicable turnaround time passed without redress.

When the RBI deadline has passed

Count from the transaction’s calendar date. For a missing beneficiary credit, check whether T+1 has elapsed; for a missing merchant confirmation, check whether T+5 has elapsed. If the applicable deadline has passed and there is still no completion or reversal:

  1. Ask the bank to confirm which failure category it applied and the date on which the reversal was due.
  2. Provide the RRN, debit entry and NPCI or in-app complaint reference.
  3. Ask the bank to process the reversal and the RBI-prescribed compensation for the delay.
  4. Keep written responses, ticket numbers and the dates of every contact.

The RBI framework specifies compensation of ₹100 for each day of delay beyond the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline. It states that compensation should be credited without waiting for the customer to make a separate claim. If the bank does not provide redress within the applicable turnaround time, the RBI circular points customers to the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021, as amended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for the principal reversal and compensation as separate line items. The principal is the amount originally debited; compensation relates only to days after the prescribed deadline. Check your statement for both credits and retain the bank’s written calculation. If the bank says the case is outside the framework, ask it to identify the transaction type and the reason in writing.

Fraud and unauthorised debits are a different emergency

Do not handle a fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised debit as an ordinary delayed-reversal complaint. NPCI directs users to report these transactions to their bank. Contact the bank immediately through its official app, telephone number, branch or other verified channel. Tell the bank that you are reporting an unauthorised transaction, provide the RRN and debit details, and follow its account-protection instructions.

Use only contact details obtained from the bank’s official app, card, statement or website. Do not share a UPI PIN, one-time password or screen-control access with anyone claiming to process a refund. A legitimate refund does not require you to enter your UPI PIN to receive money.

Use UPI HELP only where your member supports it

An NPCI circular dated 8 October 2025 describes UPI HELP as a pilot AI-powered support feature. It includes status checking and complaint logging or tracking for incomplete transactions and certain merchant-service issues through participating member channels. The pilot is not established as available to every UPI user, so look for it only in an app or bank channel that explicitly provides the feature. If it is unavailable, use the app’s normal grievance route, the NPCI complaint facility and your bank.

Common mistakes that delay a reversal

  • Paying again immediately: a delayed first transaction can later complete, creating two debits. Check the original status and ask the beneficiary or merchant before retrying.
  • Using the wrong deadline: T+1 applies to a missing beneficiary credit in a UPI transfer; T+5 applies to a missing merchant confirmation. Do not describe both as a generic 24-hour refund.
  • Leaving out the RRN: names and screenshots help, but the transaction number/RRN lets the bank locate the exact payment.
  • Relying on a notification alone: app alerts can be delayed. Confirm the status in transaction history and the actual bank debit.
  • Opening a fraud case for a normal processing delay: reserve the unauthorised-transaction route for debits you did not authorise or cannot identify.
  • Assuming an NPCI complaint itself issues the refund: NPCI routes the complaint; the relevant member bank or institution is responsible for resolution.
  • Deleting records after a status change: retain the original screenshot, RRN, bank debit and every complaint reference until the final credit is visible.

A practical record to keep

Create one note for each disputed payment containing the transaction date, exact amount, RRN, UPI app, payer bank, beneficiary or merchant, displayed status, debit date in the bank statement, complaint reference, bank ticket number and the dates of your contacts. This prevents repeated explanations and gives the bank the identifiers required to match the payment, reversal and compensation calculation.

For merchant payments, also retain the order number or payment reference shown by the merchant, along with any message saying that confirmation was not received. For transfers, record the beneficiary details exactly as displayed in the UPI app. Do not post the RRN, account information or screenshots publicly; share them only through verified bank or NPCI channels.

Decision guide

Your situation Immediate action Deadline or escalation
Pending; debit and beneficiary credit are unclear Refresh status, check with the beneficiary, save the RRN and contact the bank if it remains pending. Apply the relevant RBI T+1 or T+5 rule if the transaction does not complete or reverse.
Failed transfer; payer debited, beneficiary not credited Raise an in-app or NPCI complaint and give the bank the RRN. Auto-reversal by T+1; ₹100 per day for delay beyond that date.
Failed merchant payment; merchant has no confirmation Raise a merchant-payment complaint and preserve the order or payment reference. Auto-reversal within T+5; ₹100 per day for delay beyond that date.
Unrecognised or unauthorised debit Contact the bank immediately through an official channel and report fraud. Do not wait for a normal pending or failed-payment deadline.

What a successful resolution looks like

The final outcome should be visible in both the UPI transaction record and the bank account: either the beneficiary or merchant receives the money and the payment is marked successful, or the original debit is reversed. If the reversal arrives after the applicable RBI deadline, check that the ₹100-per-day delay compensation has also been credited. Keep the complaint reference and bank response until both the principal amount and any applicable compensation are accounted for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether a UPI payment failed or is still pending?

Open the UPI app used for the payment, go to its transaction history and open the payment details. Read the displayed status, refresh it if the app offers that control, and compare it with the actual debit in your bank account. Save the RRN and transaction date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does T+1 mean for a failed UPI transfer?

T is the calendar date of the transaction. When your account is debited but a transfer beneficiary is not credited, the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse by T+1, the next calendar day. If it is later, ask about the ₹100-per-day delay compensation.

What is the deadline for a failed UPI merchant payment?

If your account was debited but the merchant did not receive transaction confirmation, the RBI framework requires auto-reversal within T+5, or five calendar days after the transaction date. This is different from the T+1 transfer rule.

NPCI says a failed debit should be refunded within one hour. Is that the legal deadline?

NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting bank support if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. Use that as support guidance, not as a replacement for the RBI deadline that applies to the transaction type: T+1 for missing beneficiary credit or T+5 for missing merchant confirmation.

Where should I complain about a debited UPI payment?

Start with the payment’s Help or complaint option in your UPI app. You can also use NPCI’s complaint facility for transactions routed through its systems. NPCI routes the case to the relevant member bank or institution, which is responsible for resolving it. Keep the complaint reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information will the bank need?

Provide the transaction date, amount, transaction number or RRN, beneficiary or merchant details, the debit entry, the displayed status and any NPCI or in-app complaint reference. These identifiers let the bank locate the exact payment.

What if the debit is not mine?

Treat an unidentified, fraudulent or unauthorised debit as an emergency rather than a normal delayed reversal. Contact your bank immediately through an official channel, report the unauthorised transaction and follow its account-protection instructions.

Can I use UPI HELP for every failed payment?

Not necessarily. NPCI’s 8 October 2025 circular describes UPI HELP as a pilot available through participating member channels for status checks and some complaint functions. If your bank or app does not offer it, use the ordinary app, NPCI and bank complaint routes.

The Bottom Line

Check the UPI app’s status and RRN first. A debited transfer with no beneficiary credit should reverse by T+1; a debited merchant payment with no confirmation should reverse by T+5. File an in-app or NPCI complaint, ask for ₹100 per day for any delay beyond the applicable deadline, and report unauthorised debits to your bank immediately.
