To find out who called you, enter the visible phone number on Truecaller’s reverse lookup page or search for it in the app. A result can show an available name, general location, and spam-related information, but it is a lookup clue—not proof of who is calling. Truecaller says community suggestions and reports contribute to its name and spam information.
How to check a number with Truecaller
- Use the web lookup: Open Truecaller’s official reverse phone lookup page, enter the number, and sign in if prompted to view results. Availability and limits can change.
- Include the country code: For an international number, enter the full number with its country code or choose the country in the lookup page’s country selector.
- Or search in the app: For a number in an iPhone call log or contact, Truecaller support describes sharing the contact to Truecaller, using its search widget, or manually searching in the app. The exact steps may differ by app and operating-system version.
- Read the result as a signal: Note any available name, general location, and spam-related information. Community contributions help inform these details; a displayed name does not independently verify the caller’s identity.
What a result can—and cannot—tell you
A name or location is a lead, not verification
A result may associate a number with a name and general location, but those details should not be treated as conclusive identity evidence. Truecaller describes community contributions as part of its name and spam information. Confirm a caller’s identity through a separate trusted channel before sharing sensitive information or acting on a request.

Spam reports are a separate kind of signal
Spam-related information reflects reports or other service data; it does not, by itself, establish who is calling or whether a particular call is fraudulent. Consider the content and context of the call rather than relying on a label alone.
No result leaves the number unresolved
An empty lookup does not establish that a number is safe or malicious. Truecaller says its database grows through reports, numbers can change owners, and a verified name change may take up to 48 hours to appear. A number may simply be missing or its information may not yet reflect a change.

Why some numbers cannot be identified
Hidden or private caller ID
Truecaller cannot identify a hidden or private number through this lookup method because the number must be visible. As Jason, the author of a Truecaller Support article, puts it: “No, it’s not possible. The number needs to be visible on the screen in order for Truecaller to identify it.”
Missing or changing records
A visible number may still return no record if it is absent from the database. If ownership or a verified name has changed, the information may take time to update; Truecaller says a suggested name change can take up to 48 hours after verification.

Privacy controls and regional differences
Truecaller’s privacy information is feature- and region-sensitive. Its EU privacy summary describes processing that depends on the features used and discusses account, call, device, and usage information; it says contact information remains on the device and is processed locally in that EU summary. The GDPR FAQ specifically says Truecaller does not store or share personal data from EU users’ phonebooks and does not offer reverse lookup of those contacts. These statements are limited to the stated EU context and should not be generalized to other regions or every feature.
