How to check tyre pressure and understand TPMS alerts

TPMS warns of significant underinflation or a possible system fault, but drivers still need to check every tyre monthly with a gauge and use the vehicle’s recommended pressure.

A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warns when it detects significant underinflation or, in some cases, a system fault. It does not replace checking tyre pressure: measure all tyres with an accurate gauge at least monthly when they are cold, and follow the pressure on your vehicle’s label or in its owner’s manual.

What a TPMS does

TPMS uses information from sensors and an onboard processor to alert the driver when tyre pressure falls below the system’s threshold. It is a warning aid, not a continuous substitute for routine pressure checks. The exact warning display and service procedure depend on the vehicle. NHTSA explains the two main TPMS designs.

Direct and indirect TPMS: what is the difference?

Direct TPMS measures pressure

A direct system uses sensors located in the tyres to measure pressure. Depending on the vehicle, its display may show individual readings or provide only a warning.

Indirect TPMS infers a pressure problem

An indirect system uses wheel speed and other vehicle sensor data to infer that a tyre may be underinflated; it does not measure pressure directly. The design alone does not establish what information the dashboard will display.

  • Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
  • Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
  • 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
  • Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
  • Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.

For a particular vehicle, check the owner’s manual for the system type, warning behavior and any relearn or service steps. General guidance cannot confirm compatibility or repair procedures for a specific model.

What does the TPMS light mean?

A steady warning

A steady low-pressure symbol means at least one tyre is significantly underinflated. Check the tyres and measure their pressure as soon as possible. Do not wait for the warning before checking: the U.S. rule sets a detection threshold at 25 percent or more below the manufacturer’s recommended placard pressure, or below a higher minimum activation pressure specified by the standard. That is a regulatory threshold, not a safe target for routine driving. NHTSA’s final-rule summary describes the threshold.

A warning that flashes and then stays on

If the light flashes for a period and then remains lit, the system may have a malfunction rather than simply reporting low pressure. NHTSA advises having the system inspected by a dealer. See NHTSA’s TPMS guidance and its warning-lamp interpretation.

A warning in cold weather

Cold temperatures can make a marginally low tyre trigger the warning; pressure may rise as the tyre warms during driving. Still inspect the tyres and measure them when the light comes on rather than assuming the alert is harmless. NHTSA recommends checking pressure when the warning appears.

How to check tyre pressure correctly

  1. Check when the tyres are cold. NHTSA defines this as the vehicle not having been driven for at least three hours.

  2. Measure every tyre, including the spare. Check at least once a month with an accurate tyre pressure gauge. A tyre can lose pressure after striking a pothole or curb, even if no warning has appeared.

NHTSA recommends keeping a gauge in the vehicle and says TPMS is not intended to substitute for regular tyre maintenance. Proper inflation can extend the average tyre life by 4,700 miles, according to NHTSA; the agency’s consumer guidance does not state a publication year for that figure, and it is not a guarantee for an individual vehicle. NHTSA’s tyre guidance and its TPMS maintenance page provide further details.

Which vehicles have TPMS?

In the United States, passenger cars, light trucks and vans from model year 2008 onward are required to have TPMS. Some 2006 and 2007 vehicles have it as well; check the manual or ask a dealer if you are unsure. These statements describe U.S. requirements, not the rules in every country. NHTSA’s consumer page covers U.S. fitment.

Internationally, UN Regulation No. 141 provides a vehicle-approval framework for TPMS. The UN Treaty Collection records that it was concluded in Geneva on 14 July 2016 and entered into force on 22 January 2017. National adoption and current application vary, so check the rules that apply in your market. UN Treaty Collection record for Regulation No. 141.

What to know about sensor replacement or an added system

Replacement sensors and aftermarket monitoring systems must be considered in relation to the vehicle’s own equipment and service requirements. Confirm compatibility and installation steps with the owner’s manual, a dealer or a qualified tyre service provider. NHTSA’s 2008 interpretation says aftermarket TPMS products are not directly subject to FMVSS No. 138 as a vehicle standard; it also explains that a repair business or other covered entity may not make an originally compliant safety system inoperative. Manufacturers, rather than NHTSA, self-certify vehicle equipment to applicable standards. NHTSA’s interpretation on aftermarket TPMS and repairs.
