To convert a time reliably, enter the source city, destination city, event date and source time in a converter that accounts for daylight-saving changes. The date matters: locations can change clocks on different dates, follow different rules or skip daylight saving time altogether.
How to convert a time between cities
- Choose the exact locations. Use city names rather than only a country or an abbreviation: one country can contain multiple time zones or different daylight-saving practices.
- Enter the event date and source time. A conversion for a specific day may differ from one later in the year.
- Add the destination city. Read the destination’s local time corresponding to the same instant. The timeanddate.com converter accepts a date and time, calculates corresponding local times for selected locations, and says it accounts for daylight-saving switches worldwide. Its FAQ describes a limit of up to 12 cities at once, useful for comparing a meeting across a group (timeanddate.com converter FAQ).
- Check the zone or UTC offset if the result looks unexpected. Make sure the location and date are right, and do not assume similar abbreviations mean the same offset.
- Recheck far-ahead events near the event date. Governments can change time-zone rules, sometimes with little notice, so a future conversion may need updating.
Why do I have to enter the date?
Because a city’s relationship to another city can change during the year. One location may move clocks forward or back while another does so on a different date—or not at all. A date-aware converter applies the rules for both places on the day you select rather than assuming one permanent difference (timeanddate.com converter FAQ).

For example, the U.S. Eastern time zone uses EST at UTC−5 and EDT at UTC−4. Most of Arizona stays on MST year-round, while the Navajo Nation observes daylight saving time; Hawaii and several U.S. territories do not observe it. These contrasts make a fixed offset unreliable for some city pairs (NIST Local Time FAQs).
Why are the times incorrect?
Start by checking the selected locations and date. Then check whether the converter or device has up-to-date time-zone rules. Time-zone changes are set by governments; IANA’s time-zone database records location-based rules and is updated to reflect political changes. As IANA puts it, “Time zone and daylight-saving rules are controlled by individual governments” (IANA time-zone database documentation).
#1 Best Overall
- Black wood frame with decorative silver map details
- Six-city world time wall clock
- Includes 32 pre-printed silver city name plaques
- Powered by 6 AA battery (included)
- Overall dimensions: 23.5 X 33.5 X 2.25
- Wrong or ambiguous city: Select the city itself, not just a country or broad regional label.
- Wrong date: Re-enter the event date, especially if it is near a daylight-saving transition.
- Outdated rules: Update your operating system or time-zone data, then recalculate. NIST advises keeping operating-system software current for local-zone corrections (NIST Daylight Saving Time Rules).
- Misread abbreviation: Confirm the numeric offset or location-based zone as well as the label.
Why EST and EDT are not interchangeable
EST and EDT refer to different offsets: NIST lists Eastern Standard Time as UTC−5 and Eastern Daylight Time as UTC−4. Abbreviations can be easy to misread, and a label may not be enough to identify the intended rules. For a date-specific lookup, use the city name or a location-based identifier such as America/New_York. IANA’s database also uses identifiers such as America/Phoenix (NIST Local Time FAQs; IANA time-zone database documentation).
U.S. daylight-saving dates for 2026
NIST gives the 2026 U.S. daylight-saving interval as March 8 at 2 a.m. local time to November 1 at 2 a.m. local time. At the spring transition, clocks skip from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.; at the autumn transition, the 1 a.m. hour repeats. These dates describe the United States, not other countries, so use the locations and year relevant to your conversion (NIST Daylight Saving Time Rules).

Choosing a time-conversion tool
For a one-off calculation, an online converter that accepts both locations and a date is usually sufficient. If you check several cities often, a saved world clock or app may be more convenient. Compare tools by whether they accept a date, apply rules for both locations, identify the zone or offset, support the number of cities you need and present results clearly.

Checking your device clock
If the concern is whether your device’s clock itself is correct, rather than how to convert between cities, NIST says time.gov compares the browser device clock with a timestamp received from a NIST server synchronized to UTC(NIST). NIST describes UTC, UTC(NIST) and UTC(USNO) as equivalent at the 20-nanosecond level; this reference-clock comparison does not determine which city time-zone rules apply (About time.gov).
