Before buying a Steam game, compare its recent and lifetime review summaries, read dated reviews that match your priorities, and check what the developer says about any Early Access plans. Steam’s usual refund criteria for a game are a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime; Early Access playtime counts toward that limit. Steam says you can still submit a request outside those criteria, but approval is not assured.
How to read Steam reviews before buying
Steam’s review score aggregates positive and negative recommendations. It is a useful starting signal, not a substitute for reading the reviews behind it. Steam presents recent and lifetime views, which answer different questions: recent reviews indicate how buyers have been responding more lately, while lifetime reviews include opinions about older versions of the game. Steam describes these views in its User Reviews documentation.

- Compare recent and lifetime summaries. A difference between them can be a reason to look more closely at the game’s history rather than relying on one number.
- Open reviews with explanations. Look for specific details about performance, content, updates, multiplayer population, or features that matter to you. A recommendation alone may not explain whether the reviewer’s priorities match yours.
- Check review dates. Compare accounts from different periods to see whether they describe the same experience. This matters particularly when a game has changed through updates or while in Early Access.
- Consider context around the score. Steam Support explains that it may classify reviews from certain periods as off-topic when presenting scores. The score is therefore a summary shaped by platform rules as well as by individual recommendations. See Steam Support’s User Reviews page.
Steam’s standard game refund criteria
Steam’s usual criteria for a game refund are that you request it within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. Steam’s refund FAQ says online, offline, and shared-library playtime count toward the limit. These are the standard criteria for games, not a promise that every purchase or circumstance qualifies.
If you are outside the stated criteria, Steam says you may still submit a request for review; that does not guarantee a refund. Other purchase categories—including DLC, in-game purchases, bundles, preorders, and hardware—have distinct conditions. Regional consumer rights can also affect the rules. Check Steam’s Steam Refunds policy and, where relevant, its EU/UK right-of-withdrawal guidance for the purchase type and your location.

What to check before buying an Early Access game
Steam advises buyers to judge an Early Access game by the version available now and to read the developer’s Early Access information. On the store page, look in the blue Early Access section for the developer questionnaire describing plans and intentions. A roadmap or stated plan is not a guarantee of what will be delivered: Steam cautions that some developers may be unable to finish their games. Its Early Access guidance recommends waiting if the game’s current state does not appeal to you.
- Would the current version be worth playing on its own? Consider what is actually available now, not only what the developer hopes to add.
- What does the developer say may change? Read the questionnaire for planned additions, changes, and other expectations.
- How recent is the update history? Steam says it adds a store-page notice when more than 12 months pass without an update and an update-type event. Treat that notice as a signal about update history, not a prediction of future support.
- Would you accept an unfinished outcome? Steam explicitly warns that a game may not reach its planned final state.
- How much refund room would you have? Early Access games follow the same standard refund policy, and their playtime counts toward the two-hour limit.
Compare games using the factors that affect your decision
If you are choosing between several games, compare them on the points that matter to your intended experience rather than inventing a score from review totals alone.
